so , i have started to buy blurays instead of DVDs and i have questions. My TV is an LCD HDTV 720p/1080i, but i guess blurays are intended to be in 1080p.... so is the PS3 smart enough to do the movies at 720p (this is what i have my resolution set at) or does it take the picture clear back to 480 due to the fact that my TV does not support 1080p?

Honestly Casino Royale does look good, but i cant say it was the leap in PQ that i was expecting over DVDs.... so im wondering if it does not actually do HD if you dont have 1080p

do you have an info button (or equivalent) on your tv remote? then you can see what signal your tv is getting... and you can look in your ps3 menu and set the output resolution to 720p. i think one of the 1.8 updates fixed the scaling issues with blu-ray (though i'm not positive, i have a 1080p tv so i've never had this issue personally).

Yeah, I heard the 1.8 or so update to the PS3 fixed it so Blu-ray can play at 720p, never tested it though. Since launch it did go to 480p if you only had 720p enabled. So if you'e updated the PS3 recently it should be fine. And usually there's an info button on your tv remote that will display the signal it's receiving. Not sure if the PS3 will show it itoo if you hit the select button while watching the movie.

And 720p HD should look great already over DVD. Though, blu-ray quality varies from movie to movie. Sp even at 1080p if the film is not razor sharp like a 3D cg film it might look only a bit better than 720p. 720p already has 3 times the resolution as DVD, then it has no compression issues like DVDs do, so it looks even better because of a perfect pristine image every frame on top of being high resolution. Plus better color and handles dark scenes better.

Your tv is basically 720p or 768p even though it supports 720p/1080i. But if the PS3 had no fixed the 720p issue you'd still get the same quality if you had to choose 1080i, it would just downscaled it to the LCD native resolution of that 720p or 768p.

i find it kind of rediculous that bluray only supports 1080p..... i mean come on, 80% of HDTV owners have 720p/1080i sets.... bluray should be hitting a much larger market than just that 20% with 1080p....

Blu Rays support all rez thru scaling it was just the ps3 didnt do it till 1.8 . I find that 1080i still looks better since Im not sure how the ps3 scales to 720p . Maybe its just me but meh lol, still like my games in 720p tho since its smoother on an lcd screen.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. The movie discs are supposed to be 1080p, the highest out right now. No one would support the format if didn't, even those with a 720p or 1080i tv. This way it supports all HD formats at once. All Blu-ray players can change it to 720p and 1080i just the same as if it was that way on the discs. So you are not losing anything because it's 1080p, your gaining, because it sitll works fine with your 720p tv and then when you upgrade to 1080p your discs will look even better.

Also, the movies on the disc are the original 24fps at 1080p. If it was 1080i encoding it would actually take up more space because it would have to be 30fps on disc instead of 24. That would doom the format as it would permently add a jitter to the framerate with the 24fps to 30fps conversion, as that only duplicates some frames unevenly, causing a jitter. You still get a jitter on most 1080p tvs because the player converts 1080p to 60fps to support most tvs 60hz refresh rate, same with 60hz 720p tvs. Newer 120hz tvs can support direct 1080p 24fps and duplicated it 5 times evenly to 120hz and have no jitter at all. The PS3 had an update that lets it do 1080p24.

lol I know it can be confusing and yes you are. 720p is about 4 , to 5 times the rez compared to a DVD. 1080p is great for sets for 40" and if your's is under that you wouldnt see a night and day difference. So in short yes you are seeing a HD picture.

i guess i expected a much larger difference between DVDs on this TV and Blurays... oh well. atleast the color is really great.

ALL blu-ray players can run blu-ray in 1080i ...
just not downscale to 720p ...

Yeah 720p doesn't really show all that HD has to offer, the picture looks much sharper in 1080p.

my bravia runs blu-rays at 1080i and they look great. i switched the resolution on my ps3 to 720p max just to test the difference, and 1080i is noticably better. sure it looks best at 1080p, but not all of us are that fortunate. however, people who say blu-ray thats not in 1080p isnt much of an upgrade over regular dvds are re-tar-ted, or maybe just blind... one of the two for sure

did you check the info on your tv through the info button? and did you check that you have the correct resolutions enabled on your ps3? we can't tell you what signal your seeing if you don't give us any info...

dude like the other people said, there should be some sort of "display" button to show you what res your tv is at. also, it depends on your tv also, some displays look better than others. jsut like how some blu ray disk look better than others.
