OK, my questions are:

1. Which one comes first?

2. Is it important to get both games to understand the whole story? One got a bad grade one Gamespot, the other got average reviews. I'm worried i might buy the "worse" version and not like it, and return it.

I've only beaten the first one and it was enjoyable in my experience.

I think it's like the SNES version but a remake of the series.

There is First Departure and Second Evolution for the PSP. Which one comes first? And, are here other Star Ocean games that i have to play to keep track of the story?

Trust me, having beaten all four console Star Ocean games (along with the 2 PSP remakes), it doesn't matter what game came first continuaty-wise. Each has its own unique stand-alone story. Only thing that factors in is one or two laws the world is governed by. But character development and historic facts of the series are pretty much not affected. Here's how the continuaty goes:

SO4 >>>> SO1 >>>> SO2 >>>> SO3

First Departure is the first, and Second Evolution the second :P But it doesn't matter which order you play them in or don't play them at all; they have different stories.

Yes, definitely don't play SO3 before any of the Star Oceans. It ruined my experience of SO4.

as others have said... You can play any of them at any time. I played second story (second evolution) first on the PS1 Then I played part 3 on my PS2 Then I played part 1. ...started part 4 on PS3, thought it was balls, and quit I would play part 1 before 2 on your PSP...you will get a little extra out of part 2 that way, but nothing worthy of note. If you want to not play part 1, you will be fine.

I'll just add to the others... Chronologically, Star Ocean 4 (Last Hope) comes first. Then 1 (First Departure), 2 (Second Story/Evolution), and 3 (Till the End of Time). On the topic of PSP games, First Departure is remade to become more like Star Ocean 2 (in terms of gameplay and graphics), while retaining the story, setting, and characters. As such, Second Evolution is a enhanced port of Second Story (better graphics and voices), with slightly improved gameplay compared to FD. I think one of the main complaints of FD is the amount of backtracking you have to do, as well as how slow Roddick moves on the World Map and in battle. In comparison, Claude/Rena moves about twice as fast in SE.

And IYO, how good are First Departure and Second Evolution? One of them got a bad review, the other one seemed OK. But this was according to Gamespot forums...

I would just play the first two and be done with the series. Star Ocean 3 and 4 were pretty depressingly bad compared to the first two.

Let me put it this way: My favorite Star Ocean games, from most to least, are 2, 3, 1, and 4. First Departure, when I first played it, was amazing, even from the second I started watching YouTube videos of it. The graphics were amazing, even for 2D sprites and anime artwork. (There are anime cutscenes but I wish there were a few more.) The gameplay, at least in battle, was similar to Tales, which is a good thing because we don't get many Tales games anymore. I pretty much share the same opinion as most critics, like the slow world map travel. The story is okay, and the game sort of pretends its own characters (except for a few) aren't even there. This is especially true with DORNE, since you'll only be able to use him for a short while at the beginning, and never again. Notice how DORNE is in all caps? Yeah, SE decided to put all of the player characters' names in all-caps for some reason. And I wish MILLIE would come back (at least in DeviantArt and such). Also, while the max level is 255, not only is it very tedious to get there, but there's no super-dungeon of any kind, at least until after you beat the game, but even then, you'll be stuck the final area once you get there. There's a superboss (which is easy compared to what I'm going to mention next), but that's about it. Second Evolution not only fixes most of the problems I had with First Departure, but takes what was good about it and puts it on steroids. Movement speed on the map is now faster, you can return to almost any area once you get to the final save point, and there's even a flying creature that makes travel even faster. There's multiple endings (a lot more than FD, which only had 2 or 3) which I'll mention in a bit. Unfortunately, CLAUDE, RENA, and everyone else's names are still locked in all-caps. (But not in the PS1 version?) Also, compared to the original PS1 version, voice acting, and the FMV/Anime cutscenes, are DRASTICALLY improved, and voices are in pretty much every story cutscene. You can also play the game in either of their perspectives, which doesn't change much aside from some exclusive scenes in the beginning and mid-game, and some alternate dialogue. You can also cap out at 255, but this time, there are 3 superbosses (1 of which you have to unlock from early on) and a dungeon to test that strength. There's also "Private Actions", which are activated when you press Square outside of a town (unless it's your first visit). They were in FD as well, but not quite as prominent (or rewarding) as it is here. These let you trigger special scenes that raise the relationship between you and your party members. Every character has their own ending, and depending on what you do, there can be different paired endings, and things like that. It's kinda hard to explain. Also, there's a special ending with all of the characters I've never been able to get, if someone will point me to a Second Evolution video of that. Also, EVERY MEMBER (except CLAUDE and RENA) IS ENTIRELY OPTIONAL. (Although they will still join as guests.) Trust me, I thought it was cute going through the whole game with just the two, and I've even beaten 2 of the superbosses this way! (And at about level 125!) I could go on but I'm running short on time. I will say that I wish I could play these again, so SE needs to get these on PSN, because 1. I have a Vita, and 2. The "skip random battle" trick, and the trick to stop Symbology usage (that has its own animation) f*cked up both of my disks. I mean it literally - they're physically broken! So I can't play them anymore and neither can I trade them in. So yeah. FD is okay, SE is good. Oh, and I beat SE like 10 times so I can actually get through the game faster than I can FD now. Oh, and the themes are Heart and START, respectively. Oh, and I keep saying oh in this paragraph.

Just get both, then! (But play and finish FD first - there's a spoiler for it in SE's intro)

OK thanks for the info. But, i feel weird asking this, but yeah: Is there anything that some people might consider "weird" about these games? This is a horrible source, but some guy called one of the Star Ocean games "for pedophiles." I dunno about you, but i'm not into looking at females with 8 year old heads and bodies of adults, kinda strange for me.

Well....She may not look that way, but Rena is 18 (according to the SO Wiki). So....no. And IMO, I don't mind characters of that age, but I DO mind MAIN CHARACTERS BEING LITTLE KIDS. (Like Ni no Kuni.)
