You can use a USB Hard drive as well. PS3 is a very open system. Almost any third party accessory you can plug into USB ports work on it. I use a gyration branded wireless mouse and keyboard. Have my Ipod plugged in to move music. A 500gb USB drive. And I've use my Olympus Camera in the USB slot after I take pictures. All these work with no issues.
