I have been wanting to buy a 500gig hard drive, but somthing has been bugging me. How will the hard drive work with my PS3, the 2.5 sata hard drive wont have the same files as the PS3 (Game, Movies, Photos, System) the basic stuff, icons you normaly see when you turn on your PS3. The guy at the matlan store said he doesnt know if its possible to replace my old 40gig with a 500, and even if it could be done, it might over heat,blow up, or not even work at all.

Anyone know if it can be done, and if there is anything i should worry about.

Thanks =]

My understanding is it can be done. From what I've seen, Sony made it so you can perform your own hard drive upgrade. When I opened up my PS3 to take a look at the inside, I pulled out the hard drive and check it out. There wasn't a real trick to it or anything, seemed easy enough. Do a little research, I don't think you'll have any problems. Just make sure you back up your data on an external data source if you have any.

i got a 500GB in my ps3
it works fine you just don't get all the space cuase of formatting reasons
it says you get 413/465GB
it will not blow up on you if you stick with the 5400RPM model cause 7500RPM will run hotter and will in turn give you a greater chance of YLOD
there is always the 320GB hard drives out there if you don't want to risk it...

Any HDD will work up to 1TB, Your game,music,movie data can all be transfered "Except" for locked data like online games. e.g, modern warfare 2, uncharted, resident evil 5.

I think the only problem i will have is the new trophies i have. I lost the net on the ps3, it wont take the USB net stick. Only wired or wireless. My local Matlan store only order 1 500gig every month or so, most people go for big memory hard drives like the TB. If only there was a 2.5 1TB hard drive for the PS3, i wouldnt have to worry about no space lol. Ive saved the page you sent, which is a big help =D. My 40gig has no space left, its been like that since last August or longer and there are still some old/new games i need to buy. Ill go for the 5400RPM model, i dont know which my one currently is, but considering its survived this long. It must be the kind that lives for ages, even if the cat sits, sleeps on the top, which kinda bugs me lol. But thanks for your help everyone =D. I just hope i dont get the YLOD, be sad to see it go :(

if you scroll up, you will see a yellow high lighted text. It will explain what to do. I too asked the same thing and it does seem very possible. Although slim chance it might die though. Most people have not had this problem......yet lol

It wont die..the comments in this thread are very over-exaggerated. All it is is changing the hard drive..nothing really major. Use a 5400rpm 2.5" hard drive and everything will be ok. lol..Sony made the changeability easy for a reason, there's really no risk in upgrading your hard drive. (but don't think that's an excuse to be careless though :)

EDIT: Oh yeah, use Youtube people, it has great video tutorials on how to change the hard drive in a SLIM PS3 and all other models.

1. Sync trophies 2. Use System backup utility to back up existing content to USB mounted device 3. Physically change out HDD 4. Use System format utility on new HDD 5. Use System restore utility to bring content back from USB mounted device. 6. Resync trophies to pull trophy info back down. 7. Profit! Content is generally locked to your physical PS3 machine, not specifically to the HDD Edit: A couple gotchas; while there are 1 TB drives that are laptop SATA and look like they would be compatible with the PS3, currently these are slightly larger and will NOT physically fit into the drive caddy for the PS3. Also, the screws used to hold the drive in the caddy are ridiculously soft, practically like solder and will easily strip if you are not EXTREMELY careful.

strip?

Mickeyminime

yes. I stripped one screw, had to use a screw extractor to get it out. Basically, the screws holding the HD to the bracket are soo tight that when you try to unscrew it, it doesnt budge so you "strip" the screw. I havent had any issues with my hitachi 7200rpm 500gig HD
