I went to Gamestop yesterday with the plans of buying Folklore and Quake Enemy Territory. First I am told that Quake was sold out, and I would have to reserve a copy. So I grab a copy of Folklore off their shelf. Usually, their shelf copies are just display copies. However when I present my copy to the clerk, he pulls a game disc from their storage area and inserts into the case thatI gave them. I paid $60 bucks for what feels like a used copy as it was not sealed.

I also scan the store for some PS2 treasures, and found the rare Balder's Gate 2 DA! Then my smile sank when I saw the price. Fifty clams for a used title. What a ripoff. All their used PS3 games are only five bucks cheap than brand new.

I drove to the Walmart across the street, and found plenty of Quake Wars copies, and they had Folklore brand new and sealed. I wish I had purchased it there. Gamestop will continue to get less of my business.

Yeah... Gamestop can be pretty annoying. I went in there and told them that I had a pre-ordered copy of Folklore and they tried to charge me full price.

First of all - Gamestop does sell opened games as new and it sucks and there is really nothing we can do about it but take our business elsewhere. I dont ever buy a game from an Gamestop or EB if it is the opened display copy.

Second - Baluders Gate Dark Aliance 2 for the PS2 is a rare game - thats why it was so much. I have seen it at mine used for $40.

I really don't see the big problem..

..when I present my copy to the clerk, he pulls a game disc from their storage area and inserts into the case thatI gave them. I paid $60 bucks for what feels like a used copy as it was not sealed.jeffbase33

You saw he pulled out what was probably an used game, but still bought it? Suit yourself. I'd have said "no thanks".

..found the rare Baldur's Gate 2 DA! Then my smile sank when I saw the price. Fifty clams for a used title. What a ripoff. All their used PS3 games are only five bucks cheap than brand new.jeffbase33

You said it yourself, it's rare. Rare = more expensive.

I've read some really bad experinces people have had at Gamestop, but this really isn't one of them.

To TC, I definitely know where you are coming from... If a Gamestop employee tries to pull something similar in the future, just leave. Take your patronage elsewhere... Best Buy is certainly adecent choice

I have that Baldur's gate...both of em actually. Didn't ever think it was a rare game. Glad it's worth some money though. And for gamestop/EB, I don't like going to them anymore. I too always feel ripped off by them. I hate that they buy your used games for so little and sell them for so much. Pisses me off.

they need a game cover for display on their shelves. you just happened to be the lucky guy to get their last copy, thus you had to get the display case.

i dont see what every ones big deal about this is...

Hmm, yeah, now for the most part I buy my new games at other stores, as I am sure I will get them new and sealed and also won't have to deal with the fanboys at my local gamestop. I pretty much only go there now to look through the used games and see what accesories they have.

Ya...I only buy new copies from Gamestop when a game is first released, because after a while you're most likely to get an opened copied sold to you new. The clerks also play the opened copies too, so it's not like it's never been played. But, if it's the only place I can find a certain game..I have no choice. The clerks often get pissy attitudes when you interrupt their conversation too. I know being a clerk sucks, but do your friggin job!

Yeah that's what I hate about them most, too. They basically sell you used games for new price. And there's no point in selling used stuff there...they wont even give you real money...just 5 dollars off something at their store or something

I most definitley understand your problem. Ebgames/gamestop all those places are ripoffs..Countless times I USED to go there and be treated by unknowing dorks who didnt havea clue of what they were talking about.

Therefore for my gaming needs i go to BestBuy, Futureshop.

You should try to find small games that aren't from big Coperations like Gamestop.

For instance there is a store called Music Centre and there was one Store Called Rockstar Sounds near were I live and the Games were Sealed(they had a outer cover with Magnet Secuirty Lock on them) and the dearest used game was 30 euro GRAW 2 on PS3 (Brand new it is 100 euro on PS3).

the Music centre doen't have Sealed games but its Used games are very cheap

Besides the stupidity of the clerk, as you cannot reserve a game once it has been released (Quake Wars) how were you ripped off? Open or not, your Folklore was new. I don't care about the argument, "but they had it open!" Yah, and lots of products come unsealed or have customers open them to look at it, it happens and if you have an issues, buy it somewhere else (in this case, Walmart).

As for Baldur's gate 2, have you ever checked the price on eBay? For the most part the used game prices are around the actual going price of games. If something is rare, which BG2 very much is, then it is going to reflect that in price.

I understand about the game being rare, but don't think it is right. They shouldn't sell a used game for the higher than the original retail price just because people are willing to make big $$$ for it on Ebay.

I buy a lot from a local shop called GameXchange. They never charge such high prices for used games. I snagged Intelligent Cube there in mint condition for $25 bucks!

Next time, don't bring them the display case. Just walk up to the counter and ask for the game by name. That's what I do and they always go to the drawer first which are the shrinkwrapped copies even though I've seen them do exactly what you talked about to others who brought the case up to them.

It goes like this ok.... I walked in Gamesto, so i could buy a game (i forgot witch game), but anyway i got the game, and i walked to my car. After i turned on he car, a cop started beating my windows, then he shot my tires. Next he went to the driver side, and said to me "your car isn't safe enough to drive, get out of the car so i can beat you" :!

I do like EB but not Gamestop as they seem to think they can ignore me for adults even though I am more likely to buy a new game than any adult buying for their kid. EB is where I found a PS3 before Christmas last year.

I wish I had done this. I don't know why I didn't speak up and say anything. I just realized something else that really has me irritated now. They placed stickers on the case claiming it was new. One sticker was easy to peel off, but they have another sticker right on the spine and attached to the paper insert. This just immediately devalues the game that I paid for. WHen it is $60 bucks a pop, I start being a stickler about these things.

Thats why you have to caution yourself at gamestop. Unless it truely is used and the case looks good, never buy something thats not sealed. A few weeks ago, I tried buying condemned, ridge racer 7, and ddr supernova. I decided not to buy condemned and rr7, because they were supposed to be new, but they're not sealed. Pissed the person at the counter off, but I could care less. If its not sealed, its not new. Period. I try sticking with amazon, overstock, walmart, ebay, and half for my new and used gaming needs.

Why do people put up with gamestop/ebgames? If they do something wrong, don't give in. Say something about it. They try selling a supposive new game, thats actually not since the disc is out of the case, don't buy it. If theres a used game with a trashy looking case *like most used games have*, don't settle and buy it. People are too modest these days and don't think, but give in.

What is policy and what actually happens is two totally separate things. I know FOR A FACT that some Gamestop employees pass around guts (their slang for opened display games) so they can take them home and try them out .

Also, it's the priciple. Would you pay full price for a car on a dealer lot that already has 200 miles on the odometer?

Funny thing is I bought Folklore yesterday too, and got the same deal (open case). He had to walk over to the game and grab the case himself. My only guess is that we both got the last copy. Frankly, as if late I jsut expect it when I walk in the store. It's the chance I'm taking and I realize it (and walmart didn't have it, lol)

Here, I'll give you a chance. You tell me how that copy of the game being open constitutes it as used.

I'll try this one out. I think the main arguement is that now (since we al deal in discs these days) the main difference between a used game and a new one is the seal. The discs are written to. No charge is sent through them. As such, the only difference between my copy of Fight Night now (from when I bought it) is the plastic seal surrounding the case is long gone (I take real good care of my discs).

Also, now that it is opened, how do we know it hasn't been played? It would make sense that a good company (which Gamestop is, like or not. They are a very succesfulchain of storesafter all) would want their clerks knowing about the product they are trying to sell. It doesn't help business when customers ask a question such as "what's this game like?" and the clerk simply shrugs. Granted, as I stated earlier, this doesn't change the game any (as long as it's been taken care of) but does that mean that if I were to return my pristine copy of Fight Night could they charge full (new) price for it? How would we know if they did?

Another way to think about it is this. Let's say I buy a new game tommorow (Monday)and I don't like it. As such I return it Tuesday in perfect shape. Would they give me a full refund? No. If I asked why not? What do you think the answer would be? I can't get it because it was slipped into a machine and spun at high velocity? Or would it be, I can't get a refund because it has been opened?

The entire practice just seems a little shady. I think people feel like they're being taken advantage here.

If they gave you the display box copy it means it was the last one left, is still new they just open one copy to put the display box out there. You should havepre order the game and saved you the trouble.

Baldurs Gate 2 is a very rare game now GS is actually paying 45 store credit for it now.

Target, Best Buy, Walmart or Circuit City are most reliable. These stores have most reliable service and all new realeases. Gamestop is kinda annoying though. I dont trust their games, and i feel that all of them are used.

I go to walmart to buy games just to piss off Eb/Gamestop and to support the "I buy my games at Walmart" senerio. They just open the case and hand you the game and you pay for it...No BS about how "you gotta buy it used"

The exact same thing happened to me when I bought Guilty Gear:AC. I was kinda irked about it for like 5 seconds. But the disc wasn't scratched at all, and the box and instructions manual were in perfect condition.
