It shouldn't be a problem, but I'm guessing your fireplace is ON even when you play PS3 is, in which case it will generate extra heat.

Put it away from it in a more comfortable place where it won't get heated-up.

LOL, don't be so scared, that's how the really POWERFUL PS3 is. There are extra cooling units to buy, that attach to the PS3 so it should be fine. Just give it a lot of air circulation and if you can, put it on its' side, and not flat on the bottom because there is a bunch of air holes at the right side where the standby button is that needs to get ventilated, so it's best to put it on its' side and have it vented.
