No ps2 backwards compatibilty. They likely removed the ps2's GS which helped do b/c. This would save them money on the lower priced sku.

  • no ps2 b/c
  • wifi
  • 2 usb ports insted of 4
  • sixaxis
  • hdmi
  • bluetooth
  • no card readers

  • looks like trim is back
  • I didn't see an ethernet cord listed

But does the "no backwards compatibility" thing mean no EE, or that you can't even play PS2 games via software emulation?

If it just means no EE, then no biggie, but if they some how don't allow for software emulation (which makes no sense since it's through software, not hardware), then that's a bad move. The Playstation brand has always been known for it's backwards compatibility, and something that Sony has always advertised. Excellent price, I just want the backwards compatibility thing clarified a bit more thoroughly.

I don't get this, because the European PS3's don't have the EE. All the bc is already done by emulation. So I agree with you: this makes no sense.

Sony uses software emulation already, it supports 1600+ out of the 2700+ games made for the ps2 (I'm not sure about the PS1). They also state that they're working to get more emulation support & idealistically support all games on emulations. Read the official PS3 site before you guys insite panic.

If my memory serves me correctly, europe never got the EE enabled consoles anyway. I already have my 60gig unit. So settle down.

The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).

From this statement, do they mean no support what so ever? even emulation? It's seems so for this statement... Even the ones without the EE but use emulation do at least mention the support for PS2 titles.

B/c is curently done through a combination of hardware (ps2's GS) and software (emulation)

or hardware in the early models (ps2's GS and EE).

wow. everytime sony has an announcement that sounds awesome they shoot them selves in the foot. No BC for ps2 games is a HUGE mistake, especially for the long term! I think removing wifi would have been better and just had a wifi adapter.... very lame. I'm shocked.

Currently , the ps3's b/c is done through a combination of hardware and software. The hardware part is the ps2's GS (graphics synthesizer) and emulation took the place of the EE.

There will be no BC as the article states. The Swedish man in charge of PS3 Jens Alex stated (translated) - Sony has studied people's playing habits and made changes based on the result. People that have the ps3 wants to play ps3 games not ps2 so therefor this functionality is removed.

So I don't care - I would actually prefer a cheaper version of the ps3 with no bc, but my question is - if this capability is removed - this GS thingy - does that impact anything else at all? Does the ps3 become slower / worse graphics anything at all when it comes to playing ps3 games???????

Second question - there are usb adapters that allows like 2-3 units to connect to one usb port does anyone know if that would work with the ps3???

So the new 40 gig model will only be available in Europe?dahaka_1

No, Sony's europe branch is the first one to "official" announce it. The whole noBC doesn't bother me. I'd rather play PS2 games on my old PS2, maybe it's just me. If they announce the new slimmer, fat free PS2's going to $99 like rumored, I'm all over that like flies on.....fruit

OK that's explains a lot. No BC on the 40 GB, then. Guess I'll stick to my 60 GB version ;)

They are removing it from the cheaper priced ps3 not from the 80gb version.... This is smart - they get to a group that can't or won't spend as much money at a time when the wii is still hard to get. They are also able to compete straight up with xbox customers. Finally they force the customer to buy the more expensive games - this is a smart move and for those people that want bc (not me) there is still a more expensive option...

I don't see why it wouldn't work on the PS3. I have an USB adaptor that allows a mouse and keyboard to be converted to USB and I have no problems using that on my PS3

I dont think i'm yet to play a ps2 game on ps3 I dont see a need to I got my ps2 laying around somewhere if i wanna play something on it ill just turn it on. I agree wifi should of been kicked out before BC but look at 360 who the hell wants to play any old 360 games anyways and in time when ps3 grows you will all be saying the samething who cares.

Wifi would never be kicked out. Here is a summary to the changes which explains it.

1. No BC - Sony's ps3 games are more expensive so that gives them more profits. If you want to play ps2 games use your ps2

2. 2 USB slots instead of 4 - I have never used more than 2. As long as you can still have 8 bluetooth devices I don't see this as mattering to much.

3. The removal of memory card slots. Guess how Sony wants you to transfer data to the PS3 .... streaming. Guess what wouldn't be possible without the wifi card. I am sure there are a lot of features coming with home and your computer plus games that will be allowing pc characters to be created so when they removed the memory card slots they pretty much had to keep the wifi. I am sure they crunched the numbers and removed the more expensive.

BC vs Wifi was never an option - common sense I think

I agree... but it helps with the transition for PS2 owners... A cheaper system with BC would convince a lot of people to get a PS3...

Here is my theory. I've posted this elsewhere, like Joystiq. I think they will add PS2 BC to this 40 GB PS3 in the future.

The 60 GB PS3 has both the GPU and CPU from the PS2. The 80 GB version only has the GPU and emulates the PS2's CPU. I'm sure the future plan for the PS3 was to also remove the GPU, but only after their PS2 emulator could do both the CPU and GPU.

Sony wants to get a cheaper PS3 out this holiday. They are doing this by removing the PS2 GPU, among other things. The only problem is their full PS2 emulator is not ready yet. They could easily add this full PS2 emulator in the future by firmware update. The PS3 already plays PS1 games by emulator. So, that's why there is only mention of it not playing PS2 games.

I would bet that within 6 months, this new PS3 will be able to play PS2 games. Just my 2 cents.

that's right,about 90%+ of all who have PS3's also have a PS2...

PS2 BC isn't life or death to me. I did sell my PS2 months before the PS3 came out. Gamestop had a deal that you could get extra money when trading in a PS2.

I'm just glad that I have a 60 GB PS3. I have the option to play pretty much any PS2 game. I still have probably 15 PS2 games. In fact, I just bought that Family Guy game used for cheap.

It's a good move to sell more units and increase user base. A lot of people do not want BC anyway and they can't afford to buy a PS3 so this is a cheap solution for PS fans to get a PS3 during the holiday season.

As for me, I love having my PS3 with BC. Some PS2 games does look better on PS3 up-scaling on HDTV.

if u really think it future ps3 owners have 3 choice

1. they can get the new 40g with no bc at all

2.get a 60g before they are totally gone and they will provided them with everything they need when it come to playing games

3. get the more expensive 80g which has bc but only at 80% i think

1.) The PS2 chip will not effect the PS3's performance in anyway since it was not used to do anything except play PS2 games.

2.) yes you can use usb adapters as long as they do not suck a lot of power. if the do then just get a powered usb hub.

You already said it yourself ... they're PS2 owners! If they want to get rid of their PS2 step up to the 80GB. Gotta have some benefits of the more expensive model other than 40GBs.
