if u really think it future ps3 owners have 3 choice

1. they can get the new 40g with no bc at all

2.get a 60g before they are totally gone and they will provided them with everything they need when it come to playing games

3. get the more expensive 80g which has bc but only at 80% i think

ghettokid15

Looks like I'll get the 60 then.  And I think everybody who has PS2 games will not be getting the 40.  After that, i know I won't.  Considered opinion, Sony shot themselves in the foot with the 40.

Actually I think it is a full PS3 - what it is not is a ps2 playing machine.... there is nothing removed that I use anymore.....

They also dropped the price of the 60GB. And don't complain about the no PS2 BC just keep your PS2 now that the 40GB dropped in price you don't have to sell your PS2. I've had my PS3 since January 2007 and I played my PS2 games for like the first month then after that I just played PS3 all the time especially since I din't want to buy the PS2 memory card adaptor. Your not going to buy a PS3 to play PS2 your buying it to play PS3 BC is just an extra addition.

What I don't get is that people are calling this a mistake. For the consumers that buy the new 40gb Sony will make more money since they HAVE to buy new PS3 games. For the consumers that want the bc they lowered the price of the 60gb and it is an even better option today.

For whom is this a mistake?? Seems like both sides gained......

But does the "no backwards compatibility" thing mean no EE, or that you can't even play PS2 games via software emulation?

If it just means no EE, then no biggie, but if they some how don't allow for software emulation (which makes no sense since it's through software, not hardware), then that's a bad move. The Playstation brand has always been known for it's backwards compatibility, and something that Sony has always advertised. Excellent price, I just want the backwards compatibility thing clarified a bit more thoroughly.

I think the BC only goes for PS1 games, not PS2. That doesn't make sense, as people - including myself - probably own more PS2 games than PS1 games. This just plain sucks!

I am glad that i already own a PS3.

I'm still amazed why and how sony would take out a SOFTWARE feature (backwards compatibility), realy intriguing... Now all the ps3 needs is big games like UTIII to sell.

reason of BC lostDeviltrigger
it still doesnt explain why they would TAKE OUT BC altogether, sony already spent money to increase BC in the european ps3, meaning that the SOFTWARE needed to run ps2 games on ps3 is already developed and paid. I can see sony dropping UPDATES to their BC list but dropping it would save them no money. Oh and here is another rumor regarding the new SKU.

I hope they keep the BC because that would make no sense to cut it. Too many former PS2 owners (me included) prefer to play our old games every now and then. That would suck if you wanted to trade in your PS2 for a price cut on the PS3, only to find out oh wait it's not backwards compatible. Sucks to be you.

Glad I already have a PS3, the 60 GB one! The removal of BC actually makes sense to me though. When the PS3 first came out, there were very many games for it (like every Console Sony releases). So sony included the backwards compatibility to allow users to still buy and play PS2 games on the PS3 since the PS2 has a bigger library. Now that the holiday season is close, we all know of the tons of games that are coming out and the many of us will be broke and still need to grab PS3 games. I understand why Sony removed as there are a ton of games coming out this holiday season.

Heck, I don't even play PS2 games anymore... I got too many games for my PS3 and alot more are coming out in the next few months, I'm not going to have time to play PS2 games if you ask me. Warhawk already takes up most of my time and the only game that is PS2 being played on my PS3 is Sly 2 because of my wife. She is only playing that because she is waiting for Ratchet and Clank Future, so when that game comes out my PS2 games will be collecting dust or will be in the hands of Gamestop employees so I can use their credit to get more PS3 games ;)!

A wise decision in removing the card readers, I don't even use mine. I also don't even use more than 2 usb ports at a time, so thumbs up for that. Backwards compatibility is not such a big deal, great way to bring down the price is removing it I believe and that's what they did. I mean, I got my PS3 to play PS3 games, If I wanted to play PS2 games I would have kept my PS2. Now no BC for Ps2 games doesn't actually mean you won't be able to forever. I'm sure you can still play PS1 games still because Sony made a full featured emulator that doesn't depend on Ps1 parts in order to run games. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?I'm pretty sureSony right now is making a full fledge PS2 Emulator that can run PS2 games without any PS2 hardware, it's not a matter of if but a matter of when because I'm sure Sony is fully capable of implementing the emulator into a firmware update ;)!

Sony took a gamble and I think they gained all the money in this game of chance, $399 is a great price point and competes well with the Pleasefixme's price point. Some may be disappointed that PS2 BC is removed but it may return later as an emulator made by Sony. Everyone is looking at this as the glass half empty instead of the glass half full. Cheaper price means more people are going to buy the console, more people to play against online, and more better games will come because developers will see that the PS3 fanbase has grown substantionally over this great price reduction. Not alot of people have great pay jobs or have rich parents, this is a perfect price for new people to grab a PS3 at $399!

This is also a first in history for Sony to drop a price of their gaming systems down so much too in less than a year. PS2 and PS1 when they first came out didn't drop their $399 price tag until a year after launching and they kept dropping a $100 or less every year after that. But $200 less than the original asking price of the PS3 in less than a year sounds like a good deal to me and probably to alot more others. Aren't you sick of playing games online with a limited base to play against like Resistance and Fear? This could really help us gain more people to go up against online, to chat with, to have more firends and clans... This will truly help the PS3 crowd to grow extremely large or at least a level ground as the other guy. Sony is sure biting the bullet for this one but it will surely help in sales and gain developers and game companies to change their mindsin making games on PS3 because the fanbase will be growing soon, I'm sure of it!

well to cut cost and meet their goals/demands that's what sony will have to do. this is considered their low end model without BC / EE. PS2 owners should think about keeping their ps2 system becausesony already had this SKU in mind. this model will not be for everyone. it's aiming toward audiences who's interest is only the ps3 games and bluray movies at an affordable price. by the way, im one of those people who no longer plays ps2 games may be once in a full moon.

I suppose most people here are probably hardcore gamers that play game's pretty regally along with other commitments so I can see why it means so much to you but unfortunately hardcore gamers are a minority of game owners most people will play maybe once or twice during a month or less. They buy a game and then play it maybe even finish it put it on shelf and it is forgotten. Casual gamers as they are called could not care if they can't play these games any more if because all they want is the new Console so the can play new games most of them probably will still have there 64 or ps one in a corner collecting dust. Unlike hardcore gamers who like to play there games over again to get all the collectables and on different difficulties a casual gamer will play the game through easy or normal once and then forget about it. To sum up for people who can't be bothered reading my rant casual gamers make up majority of the market and frankly don't care about games as much as the minority hardcore gamer. As evil and vile as it seems to you guys Sony will get more sales with this model because of casual gamers like my cousin. I personaly could not care about backwards compatibility.

well people wanted a cheaper priced SKU and yet theyre still complaining about it but i do agree the lost of BC is strange and has been a strength for the playstation console. The features has to be cut to to lower price points and thats what sony is doing for the customers.

Sony is doing what they can to accomodate you guys that wanted a lower priced ps3. So dont Worry. Be happy

well this is kind a retarded, their killing off a large consumer base by not adding b/c, but on the other hand this is the lower end model of the 3 availible, also it does make sense that this SKU is aimed at a more casual consumer, who probably won't care about b/c in the long run. As long as they justifiably give something in return.

They give a lower price in return. As long as BC is an option in other models AND Sony and the stores are very clear when they sell the 40gb this is a great move...
