Hey All...vernholioThere will always be shooters. How else do you think the United States will train all you soldiers for the wars you will fight? They have to make war seem "cool" somehow!

Holy crap! I completely retract the original post -- everybody stop posting additional replies! This guy has opened my eyes to the true reasoning for rampant FPS development! War, baby, WAR!!! How could I have forgotten about my mandatory, take-over-the-world Miltia training through video games?! See what happens when you let the occassional RPG or Action game slip in to your gaming regimen? You get soft, soldier!!!! Developers, PLEASE keep on developing more and more FPS's... I need to stay battle-ready!
Dude, we get it...ALL of us Americans are only out to steal your oil and take over the world. Wait a minute, we're not? The majority of us are just "Average Joes" (just like you) that post questions on a gaming web site with the hopesof getting gaming-related replies, and not be America-bashed? Oh, silly me... what was I thinking?
Oh, and BTW... You're the only one that thinks that you're funny.
Love, peace and flowers to all.

P.S. Look at my sig line... I guess in saying that, my ENTIRE post is a moot point. Because everybody (even this guy) is entitled to his opinion (but maybe he should keep it to himself).
I agree! The most hyped and invested games for this year are shooters : Halo 3, Killzone 2, UT3. I think this trend has to do withhow this"next gen" thing was promoted: killer graphics! So developers pour time in getting pretty graphics while using the tested and proven "shoot them up formula".Failures ofdifferent genres such as Lair/Blue Dragonwill make the trend worse. Why riskthe high productioncostofgameswith gameplay elements that are unproven, unless you are apopular franchise such as MGS,FF, God of war, Fable, Zelda, mario, etc, etc?
Who will have the balls to work on a new IP of innovative game with high production value outside the FPS genre? I certainly hope someone....
i hated shooters.. but now they've become more immersive, i'm hooked.. played Gears, Resistance, Bioshock, CoD2 & 3, Halo3 Beta, Red Steel, Crackdown, Rainbow 6 Vegas, Lost Planet,.. and to think all the shooters i'm going to play: UT3, Killzone2, Metroid3, CoD4, Halo3, etc.
but i also play completely shooter unrelated games. lot's of them too.. it's all about what you like...

Seems kind of stupid then for the same government to constantly annoy the industry and force new laws constantly to keep violent games out of everyone's hands, except for those of us old enough to not be "train"ed in the first place.
That said, while I've had the occasionaly fun with a shooter, I definately see what the original poster is saying. Every game site hypes these run of the mill clones of each other like they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. And even if Lair sucks, which has been contested by several gamers who give it praise, it's pathetic that reviewers are so freaking set in their FPS ways that sitting up and having to careful pitch a controller means they will complain endlessly.
While games like Final Fantasy have always followed a formula, I've always thought the industry's FPS genre could learn from the fact that each game is willing to abandon the pre conceived system to innovate, despite complaints that might follow. You'll never see a Halo go "this new installment replaces the old shooter system with a new revolutionary hand to hand combat system" because the genre and the industry would rather just make a quick buck then to take chances. That's not saying it's a bad thing because the same old same old is what many people want...but it'd be nice to see new games try new things, rather than these dime a dozen shooters that all do the same thing.
I see what you mean, but FPS have slowly become my favorite genre of game, so I don't mind. A bad game is a bad game, if shooters continue to innovate (BioShock) or are just plain fun (Warhawk), I'll keep playing them.
I don't think it would be any better if there were too many RPGs, too many action platformers, etc. It just makes it harder to sift through everything. That's where sites like GS come in.

You pretty much nailed it here. Why try and innovate when the money is to be made from sequels. GTA 4, Halo 3, MGS4, Final Fantasy Thirteen, PGR4, Gran Turismo 5, Call of Duty 4...
If LittleBigPlanet "flops", it will be one less reason for any developer to take a chance on something new.
Lair is a critical failure, but it is selling well, and if it continues like this, it just goes to show that reviewers and the media have very little control over what the public will buy.
It's up to the public to buy innovative, original games and stop buying every EA football game that comes out. We control the market, we're just not organized enough to do anything about it.
I like shooters, but i agree with you.
There are too many shooters, most of them are crap or sequels without innovation.
in the middle of the junk that is released each year a innovative and good shooter is rare.
