Often times I see developers talking about how important it is to make games play in short sessions. For me personally, I play my PSP mostly at home and playing in short sessions isn't important to me because I play my PSP for as long as I play a console for. So I'm wondering if it is a myth amongst developers that the majority of PSP owners want games that play in shorter sessions, so I'm making this poll. So please vote and make comments.

I usally play in long sessions and short sessions, I don't know why they would make short session games though, unless short session games like wrestling where you can play a match then quit, but then that would be stupid atleast to me they can be long session games where people who do play short session games can just pause and cut it off, ever think of that?

short sessions suit the portable nature well, which is why devs like it. On the other hand, it restricts what you can do in the session considerably. Its normally best if a game has both. If i had to choose one, id say long sessions, since it can be put to sleep.

Well one of the things I didn't like about Metal Gear Solid PO was that Konami restricted the games to short sessions so the levels never felt connected the way they have in the other Metal Gear Games. And Konami said it was important to have the game played in short sessions, although I think this was an excuse because developers find it hard to stream data to make a large world. Although I think Tomb Raider Anniversay has done an excellent job.

I think all developers need to do is add a save anywhere optionin most of the games. The only problem with that, is it lessens the difficulties in some games, or add more save points in games, etc. rpgs. I can't wait for FFT cause it should have a save anywhereoption, if its similar to FFTA, it should have a save in game option so i can choose to play for 2 hours, progress the story line alot, or just play half a game, save in the middle and pick up later.

Isn't this what the PSP's sleep option is for? At least thats what I use it for. I usually play in long sessions but sometimes I'll only play for around 15 minutes. If I'm in the middle of something I just pause the game and put the psp on sleep and then I'll come back to it later.

to be honest, i don't really like to leave my psp in sleep mode, espeically if its going to be just sitting there. I know it doesn't use that much battery, infact its actually proven that it takes more battery to power on the psp ect, then it does to put it in sleep mode and leave it there. Idk i just have a stupid fear that my psp is going to like start on fire or something. yeah......w/e idc i just don't like to leave my psp in sleep mode for long periods of time.

theres 2 problems with sleep mode :

1) It uses more power than is ideal. I know its not much, but theres been more than a few times ive tried to tun the thing on and its dead. This is also due to the terrible battery life of the thing, tho.

2) You cant use sleep if you want to use the psp while youre not playing - in particular, playing music (as i do).

I kind of just argued against my point above lol. So, i say again, games should ideally have longer sections and missions etc for the added depth and stuff, but also have short stuff for playing when time is limited. Either that, or have lots of chances to save.

I never thought about not being able to listen to music etc. when the psp is in sleep mode and you can't save, simply bcauseI use my psp just to play game, butthat's a good point to make. Adding too many save points can be a problem though.

I have to disagree with the bad battery life of the PSP though. I've never been in a situation where I felt I needed more battery life, but I'll be honest and say i use my psp mostly at home. But sometimes I do some long gaming sessions and im surprised by how much battery life is left. I am use to seeing 3 hours of battery life standard on a laptop though so I'm sure that has something to do with my perception.

NO WAY, I hate game developers who try to make the game from short sessions

Most of the time I play in long sessions, always knowing how much time do i got, so if I know the time is very short I just listen to music or so, Or if I´m interrupted I just put it on sleep mode so no biggie

Obviously the PSP was designed for portability, and as such short gaming sessions, but I think it is quite fair to say that the majority of users of the PSP now use it in longer sessions, 45mins plus. I personally hate the games designed for shorter sessions, as they just seem like wasted games, and make me notice even more that I am playing a portable console rather than a real console. This is why GTA VCS was so good for me, and all other games that follow in those footsteps are the ones I will enjoy more on the PSP.

The battery life is bad, for a handheld console device, and it doesnt last much longer when playing music. Its fine if you have easy access to a charger, but for example it wont even last 5 - 6 hours of traveling, which is a pain. Also, i often forget to put it on the charger, since it goes in my bag when i go places (i bike a lot) and i use it for music pretty much the whole time im away. Whats more, is that the battery life drops considerably over time (its at least an hour shorter, for my 2 year old battery). Overall, its very annoying, its not something that makes me dislike the console, but i wish sony had put more time in making a decent battery.

Battery technology hasn't changed a whole lot over the past few years, and you can't blame Sony alone for that. Also, there aren't any handheld video game devices out there that have the kind of power the PSP has, so there isn't anything out there to compare it too. Also, the PSP has a large screen so that takes up a good amount of power. And going back to batteries, Sony can't put in a better battery because lithium batteries are the best for this type of application. The only thing Sony can do is put in a bigger battery but of course, space on the device is limited. Do you have a second battery? Because changing batteries on the device is really easy and a second battery isn't much to carry around. People complain all the time about poor battery life in laptops, but manufactuers are constantly working to lower the power consumption of devices, but they are stil limited by battery technology. The only thing you can blame is the lack of new battery development.

Well no, im not saying 'bad stupid sony! make a good battery!'. Im just saying that i dont think they put as much effort as they couldve into what is a very important aspect of the psp. Heck, the slims battery apparently lasts as long as the old one, and its a fair bit smaller. Of course, the slim uses less screen power, so maybe its not actually a better battery.

Maybe what i want, is less of a good battery, but more good use of it in the psp itself. For example, using the remote turns the screen on, even tho this is generally unecessary (when i play music with it, 90% of the time its in its pouch, in my bag). At the very least, there should be an option to make it not turn on from the remote. Sleep uses more power than id like, although that might be as little as possible, so i wont make a big point of it (anymore). The ~6 hours i get out of it for music (less for games) is not really ideal, hopefully something will be done to make it better.

I think there should be a save anytime option. Especially in games where it won't affect game play. One thing that pi**ed me off in MLB 06 was that you couldn't save in-game. It was very annoying when I would reach my subway station in the 7th inning. Even if it would affect game play, you could have a save-exit any time, where the game will save but exit, and restore on load-up. It could then delete the save file. It wouldn't be like a regular save so you couldn't just keep playing from the same point over and over.

sleep mode doesn't help, because as stated above, you may not want to turn off your psp. I like to play games while riding the train, then switch to music for the walk from my stop.

Games on the PSP dont have to and shouldn't be broken into shorter session if developers are worried about games on the go just add more check point with autosaving, breaking up the action of the game into smaller chunks can sometimes break the flow of a game. Anyway the PSP has a great sleep mode feature if games need to stop in a hurry.

i dunno what this "sleep mode" thing is, lol, but i just turn my PSP off! This is absolutely my favorite feature about the PSP! That you can simply turn the PSP off, and next time you turn it on, you'll be right back where you left off! So for PSP games, save spots and the ability to play in short bursts doesn't matter at all! :-D

I play in long sessions when I haven't got anything to do, and play in short sessions during commercial breaks on TV.
