Im interested in the game however I have never played a metal gear solid game before. Would I be missing key things in the story or could I still get enjoyment out of playing?

You're asking us whether YOU should play a game or not? (Sigh) This a choice that only YOU can make. This is honestly a choice of common sense, so lets let the clock tick starting...............NOW.

Yes, yes you would. It wraps up the storylines from the past three games, so you'll be pretty lost. You may still enjoy it, or you may hate it, it's hard to say. If you're really interested in the series, it would be a big mistake not playing the others.

LMAO! Denji is silly.Do you even understand his question? He doesn't want to waltz into MGS4 having no idea what's going on... But sorry TC, you probably will. lolYou're asking us whether YOU should play a game or not? (Sigh) This a choice that only YOU can make. However, a child could figure this out if given the choice. Do you even understand my response to his question? If you did, I wouldn't have to post here again. You're asking us whether YOU should play a game or not? (Sigh) This a choice that only YOU can make. Once again this is a very obvious reply...YES.I was asking if I would be missing story details, that is not a descision for me to make for myself, that is something that I ask people that would know.

I never played a MGS game and loved every second of it. I'm not a huge story buff though. Understanding what's going on is not that difficult even without all the inside details of the story. I thought the game was outstanding and so glad I didn't pass it up. At $30 I think it would be a huge mistake to miss, I paid $60 day 1 and would do it again.

hey now, telling people what to do has its perks as well.
anyway, you should play the whole series TC... you can't treat MGS4 as a standalone title.
i recommend buying mgs1 on psn, it costs less and it starts the solid solid series, ifyou have bc or a ps2, then get msg2 adn 3, mgs 4 is very confusing if you havent played the other 3, heck it was confusing the first couple of times through and i have played the other 3 within a month before i started it....but i think it is a very good game
Well, half of this game consists of cut-scenes. Literally. There are more here than most RPGs--and it's a pretty short game. It's really all about the story, man. Without it, the combat is just good. With it, it's beyond marvelous.
So, yes; you should either play, at the very least, MGS2 and MGS3, or simply watch all the cut-scenes on youtube. You'll miss out big time. Nearly every single conversation in this game relates to past games. So, unless you're buying this just for muliplayer, you need to rewind and get to know the whole story--which is better than what most novels manage. (And I read . . . a lot.)
And, maybe it's just me, but after you've played through it once, a second time doesn't seem all that inviting. After you know all the story elements, after you've sat through all those plot twists, cliffhangers, and emotional content . . . well, no need to play it again. Multiplayer is fun enough, though. Unlike any other game I have ever played.
Btw: This deserves that 10/10. Completely and utterly.
I don't think you need to play the entire series to get whats going on, but I would recommend at least playing the first game.

true, there is an trophy in the game for beatin the game in 5 hours.......so yeah
mgs4 related to mgs3 more then 1.I don't think you need to play the entire series to get whats going on, but I would recommend at least playing the first game.

You won't get a lot of it, thankfully there's an encyclopediaon the psn store that spans the whole series.
And get some food ready everytime a cutscene comes up. You'll be waiting a while ;)
I went into the game thinking MGS??? I never played one before and yes there where many things that didn't tie in until later and stuff and i never really understood it until after i beat it and downloaded it Database off of the PSN and started putting things together but i still dont understand it all by any means but nevertheless it is still an amazing game i mean you'll kinda get the "just" of it lol
They actually tell u the whole story from the beginning even though u will be lost some places in the story u will understand the purpose and will be very gratifying once u finish the game and u will be happy to have played such a game with such a deeeeeeeep story :DI was asking if I would be missing story details, that is not a descision for me to make for myself, that is something that I ask people that would know.

I've had MGS4 for more than 2 months now and I refuse to play it until I play the first 3. I just bought a ps2 just to play part 2 and 3. I think you should at least play the 1st one and read about the other 2 before you play.
You definitely should, but play the first three first. You can still understand a lot of what's happening, but you'll miss the true beauty of it without playing the others.
^ But the "holy crap" moments of the story wouldn't shock you since without playing the prior games you would be unknowing. SAGE_OF_FIRE
Ignorance is bliss I guess, LOL
I understand it would have meant alot more like having played Uncharted 1 and catching the little inside jokes of 2 and such. I just don't think someone should pass on it because they never played previous titles. I don't have a problem with people telling someone they should play the previous games but I do think it's bad advice to say pass on it completely unless you play the previous games.
For one that have played all of the metal gear series there is I HAD to play it. But one who hasn't play them at all... Well sure it explain everything but still I think you gonna miss some of the plot things there and you won't undestand all of if. so I think you will miss some realy good thing. What I would do if I was you. Go to playstation store and buy mgs1 and play that. Sure the it's ps1 game and all but still the story is there and you would undestand much more even in the first mgs game.
Ignoring all those aggravating MusashiSensi's comments, I'd have to say you could pick up MGS4 even if you haven't played the others. There's a MGS Database you can freely download on your PS3 which doesn't spoil MGS4 at all (MGS 4 content is blacked out without a complete MGS 4 save) and is fun to read. You'll be missing all those great previous games though. You could start with MGS1 PSOne Classic on PSN, but if you don't have the ability to play MGS2 and MGS3 you could jump straight to 4.

No but the "holy crap" plot moments that change the way you thought about things in prior games wouldn't effect you.Look TC, going into MGS4 without playing the previous games is like starting watching season 4 from Farscape without watching the previous 3. Sure, the game briefly explains who and what, and it does it quite well, but nothing will replace the actual experience of playing the games, knowing the characters and the events that lead to MGS4. Unlike, probably any other video game ever made, MGS4 is a sequel in the true sense of the word, it ties togetherand concludes events and characters from all previous games.
On the other hand, iffor whatever reason you are not goingto play the old entries, then i suggest you play MGS4 regardless. You won't get the meta-story refferences and sometimes the emotional value will be lost, but, there is still a lotand i mean a lot of stuff that mightdeeply impress you in story, gameplay, graphicsso, yes it is definitelly worth it either way.
