In a way, yes. In a way, no.
Graphics have gotten to be an essential part of games now a days. So what? I tried to go back and play FFVII a couple of weeks ago, but just couldn't do it. The graphics threw me off. I can still enjoy sidescrollers and 2D games, as they are still standard on the likes of GBA/DS, but when it comes to 3D games, mine have to look good. No reason to let a great game go to waste with horrible graphics.
I think graphics started to be important when most games started all playing like each other there is not very much originality and when a generation of systems is advertised for its amazing graphics then thats what we expect.
graphics are a make or break part of games these days because they add that last thing to a game in order to make the experience that much more enticing
Graphics whores are usually young idiots who have no idea about real games and what they are meant to be. Personally, graphics are only important in a current gen system being compared to other current gen systems and I only care about graphics when they are bad from a technical standpoint. For example, bad framrate, choppy graphics that break up etc.
I am still buying PC Engine, Mega Drive and Super Famicom and Saturn games and will continue to do so for as long as I can. There are not many games in the PS2/3, Xbox/360 era that can compare to the best games on those systems.
Well like I said its important for this generation because games get so much advertisement months maybe years before they hit shelves and so all people have to go off is how the game looks right?
no one is saying that old games are bad because of there graphics we are talking about new games who doesn't love MARIO! for nes and snes or FF7,8, and even 9, what about ocarina those are all classics that people will never forget however when people see an ugly looking game these days even if it is fun it will be forgettable compared to a game that is just as fun and looks amazing
you are wrong, my friends. FF7 is one of the best looking game back in 1997. That's how it got so popular.
Who said graphics dont make a game? Imagine playingany kind of gameswith blocky characters like NES nowaday. Who would want to play it? I know there are Arcade Java games online everywhere but that's only for short burst of fun.
lol comparing GTA to FF hahah they are different games dont you think that if there was a game that did the same thing as GTA but looked twice as good people would pick that up lolFF-resevil-haloyou mean like saints row? a next gen game that still wouldnt outsell san andreas if released on the same day because the gameplay is nowhere near as good as san andreas's?

FF-resevil-halo
That's the thing though, most people on this board make comments such as "I used to like FFVII but now the graphics suck! They should remake it for the PS3!! YEA!!" As far as I am concerned, a classic game is a classic game because the things that made it a classic in the first place do not change.
saints row had the fatal flaw that it was not as free roaming, and also do you think that if when GTA3 came out and saints row came out on the same day people wouldnt have picked saints row. in my oppinion half the reason GTA sells so well is not only the game it self being great but its predessesors tell people that this game should be great because the ones before looked good and played well too, so without people knowing how amazing gta3 and vice city were beofre them do you think as many people would have bought san andreas its like halo 2 outselling halo 1 its because by the time they made the sequel halo was already a well known name.
so in the end for alot of people if san andreas was not stamped with the GTA name on it and it came out same day as saints row people would take a better look at saints row before san andreas
I rememeber playing the squared people in FF7 and thinking wow this game kicks butt.I rememeber a time when we rated games by how invilved the story got us.I rememeber side scrollers that would last me days and not even think about 3d.It makes me sick to listen ot this "new" generation of gamers complain about graphics.Anyone else feel the same way?bboycookie2
Since game stopped being 2D.....quit moaning about other people's preferences.....
I loved alundra, and pitfall and Gabriel Knight.......but do you really think anyone's gonna pick up a title like that today???
Why go with something outdated when technology gives us breathtaking realism?
its not just that no one picks up a game just because it looks pretty not as many people are going to pick up lair now because it apparently has a steep learning curve so what if it has amazing looking dragons when u have to take an hour to find out how to fly the dam thing lol
and its vise versa for warhawk it does not look amazing it looks quality though lol and people see that and note that its a popular gmae style with a cool 32 player online style and say there is a good combination between graphics and gamplay
imnot about to pick up and rpg that is a clone of every other rpg these days if it looks like poop

I feel the same way. I miss the good old days where graphics weren't important.
every old game you people have named with great gamplay has been a classic you know why>? because when it was made it had amazing graphics and gameply putm together FF-resevil-halothis is correct. graphics have ALWAYS mattered. i mean, video games are primarily experienced visually, so it's stupid to ignore the importance of quality graphics (not necessarily most realistic, but most appropriate to a specific task). i remember when i was a kid one of the big advantages (but not the only advantage) of the snes over the genesis was that the snes could display something like 100 extra colors, thereby making the graphics richer and more vibrant. arcade ports like street fighter 2 looked considerably better on the snes. graphics are always the first thing people notice and are able to discuss about a game.
i dunno it gets annoying sometimes. if a game is fun its fun. doesn't have to look mind blowing to be good. as for ff7 i still beat it once or twice a year and love it more with timelonghorn7
I agree.

I whole heartidly agree with you. Most of the people that play games these days aren't real gamers. Their first system was a 360 and they hook it up to their parents hdtv. A real gamer doesn't give a crap about graphics or how good the game looks, just how fun it is. I have more fun playing Super Mario then I do with most Next Generation games. Heck...Resident Evil 1 is still one of my favorite games of all times and that game looks terrible these days.
Shrug.
This whole thread has a hint of wii/xbox fanboyism to it.
The truth of the matter is, graphics are important for the emersive quality of games. People subconsciouslly (if you realize it or not) want to get pulled into the game, and shut out the world around them. Everytime in history that a new ground breaking game has come out, part of it has been due to the graphics.
Anyone remeber the first time they played the Wolfenstein or Doom demos back in the day on 3.5" floppies? Arguably you could say "Those games sucked, all you did was shoot Soldiers or Demons, been there done that."
For me personally I think that good graphics to me is icing on the cake, as long as it doesn't get in the way of gameplay then I say make the best friggen graphics possible.
Anyone who thinks the "video" aspect of video games isn't important is obviously missing half of the point.
Graphics are important in how they add to the atmosphere, help convey the story, and they're just nice to drool over when like in a lot of the more recent games. But, they're really secondary to how the game plays overall. I like to play through older games every once in awhile. The only case where graphics have really been an issue for me tend to be some of the older shooters, like Wolf 3D. They're still fun, but tend to give me a headache to play for long.
I've seen this attitude about graphics, the tendency to dismiss games because they're not the newest and best looking, moreso in the last ten years or so. But then, it's usually from the same crowd who dislike music or movies before some arbitrary date. It seems to all be the same "it sucks if it's not new and shiny" attitude.
I dont see why this is an issue for you or anyone else. For some its all about graphics, for others its about a name, for a few its all about gameplay...but when its all said and done the fast majority of games are purchased based on recommendations from friends or name recognition. Look at Halo...it was nothing, until it caught on like wild fire for whatever reason, and now Millions of copies of this game and its sequels have been sold.
If a game is new and has a name people aren't familiar with they will need something to make them want to purchase the game. Society is centered around looks. So Graphics (Looks) do matter. Presidential Elections (Nixon v. Kennedy), Movies, Television its all centered around beautiful people and environments (Planet Earth). If it looks great it sells.
Enough of this nostalgic BS and understand that great graphics sell games and selling games is the business these companies are in. They need to make money and a pretty game will sell much better than an ugly one.
well i care alot about graphics, but i wont go over board and not buy a game just because the graphics suck. i think graphics give the game that extra unique expierence, so graphics arent everything but they do mean something solidsnakechamp
That is excatly how everyone should view games. They only help add atomsphere to the game or make the experience visually pleaseing to watch. That is all nothing less and nothing more.

Sure the message is more important overall than the messenger, but if both aren't of high quality, nobody will listen. So I agree that they aren't everthing, they are important.
A game like FFVII had difficulty sucking you in, becuase it had unrealistic, unbelieveable graphics, but it managed anyway with it's compelling storyline. When I found out that **SPOILER** Aeris dies **/SPOILER**, I cried!!! LOL. But a game with the graphical quality of RFoM or Bioshock really can make you feel as though you're there.
near the start of this thread i dominated with some quality posts :D hooray for me!
I like good graphics there are no games with bad graphics that are considered great this gen, but no one hates the classics those are all proven games that people cant forget
why buy a next-gen console, as its advertised with all its specs and promises if the game looks like crap.
graphics are a MUST! ....
actually im picking up lair BECAUSE of the learning curve. i want something unique for a change. and every rpg is a clone of another rpg for the most part lol ff is really the only original franchise left with a few exceptions
longhorn7
Because Final Fantasy hasn't done the EXACT same thing with the EXACT same story 11 times in a row.
