Yes, i bought Ni No Kuni today. I do not normally play JRPG games, but i figured i would give this one a try. So far i am liking the game. It is beautiful looking ( and sounding ). Unique characters make the game feel less of a Japanese game ( no spikey hair dudes in female clothes ) and more of a fantasy i can relate. Its a nice long intro that teaches all the play mechanics, so i am not stressing out over anything too complex, yet anyway. So far, its a really good game.

[QUOTE="Geminon"]i bought it and i like it and hate it at the same time. the writing is pretty poor and the game is extremely childish. i mean, characters say "jeepers" "golly" and just act like ignorant 8 year olds all the time...it is all very cheesy. the gameplay however, is amazing. it is also an extremely nostalgic game. these two things are ALL that is keeping me playing.Bigboi500

To me that's refreshing compared to most of the crap that devs put out these days, like how almost everything tries to simulate the "gangsta" world. It's either mob bosses or rappers, space marines or military shooters almost everywhere you look.

it seems like they were going for the pleasant 1950's america as oliver's world because it's suitably nostalgic, it makes the whole setup with his mother more tragic, and it's isolated. he bases his fantasy on it and the slang of the time "neato" and all that.

My GFs 13 year old brother was making fun of me for playing a "kids" game. I asked him why its for kids. He told me no blood, the main character is a child, and you use pokemon to battle. I think the game is fun, so far it really holds your hand alot but I am just starting out.

I bought it on release and got the Steelbook at Gamestop. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I have no idea what it is or what kind of game it is, so I'm not interested.SoNin360
But if you did know you might be interested?

At least he knows that he is a child since the main character is the same age as him.

The game is absolutely fantastic. It's shaping out to be the best JRPG this gen, which isn't saying much, but it blows everything else out of the water.

yokofox33

This. This game reminded me that JRPGs can still be whimsical without being cliched and obnoxious.

I bought the game last night and, for the first time in a long time, I lost track of time while playing. Logged in about 4 hours and it's already shaping up to be one of my favorite games of this gen. I'd say favorite JRPG, but like you said, that's not really saying much these days. :(

I'm not able to buy it full price. I will wait until it drops to like £15-20 before pulling out the wallet.

Man, this game is getting tough. I'm getting my butt kicked on EASY right now. I'm pretty stacked level-wise and my familiars are equipped solidly, but I'm just dying. Perhaps I'm just not getting my tactics set correctly or something.

My only complaint about the game is that familiars start at Level 1 again when you metamorphise them. That's kinda lame in my opinion. You have to seriously grind more than you need when you evolve them.

As a rule of thumb I always like to grind and "over level" myself so the chances of me having a hard time when I move to a new area are reduced. It's a bit of a pain because it gets boring grinding it out, but in the long term I find it's better to be over leveled than under.

I am getting ready to buy a Ps3 just for Ni no Kuni and all the other great exclusives dropping this year on Ps3. I have been all about Xbox the past couple of years and now am glad to say I'm going back over to the dark side.

Ignorance is a good excuse for missing AAA games nowadays??

Not a good excuse, but certainly among the oldest. To answer the topic, I just got it today and it's awesome. I'll have to force myself not to play it constantly.

i just don't evolve a familiar if i don't have another to take its place. you don't need to grind if you time your familiars right.

this, and KevinV mentions it in his review. they should start at half the level they were when you morphed them, not lvl 1. it introduces needless grinding and makes me really question whether or not i should even be morphing them in the first place. im 15 or so hours into the game and the thought of morphing Mitey a second time fills me with dread considering he is lvl 24 now.

Yeah, it's a pain and really makes you think about leveling your creatures. I need to find a good balance of familiars though for my characters. I'm thinking of givng everybody some really good attackers and having no one use abilities for normal fights and then switch the tactics for boss fights.

I'm too busy with other games right now, but I'll buy it eventually. However, considering all of the games coming out in the first half of the year that I want on day one, it will probably be quite a ways down the road.

I'm about ten hours into the game right now (just got Esther in my party) and while I'm still thoroughly enjoying the game and, so far, intending to 100% it, I have a few minor complaints.

I wish the monster stat raising system was handled differently. It's sort of boring having to sit there feeding my monsters ten treats per level to maximize their stats. Obviously this isn't mandatory, but the fact that the option is there makes me need to do it; I've always been a completionist in my RPGs, for better or worse.

My other complaint is just how fast the battles move. When I go to defend against an enemy's oncoming special attack, for example, the attack often ends up going off way before I can defend. This applies to healing as well. By the time I've sorted through my spells to heal a party member, she's likely dead. Is there a way to "pause" the battle to sort through the menu to defend/heal or is it just a matter of quick menu navigation before the enemy's attack goes off?

Not that I've seen. You pretty much have to be on your toes during battles. I've noticed the same thing if you're not paying attention you can end up dying very quickly. It'll break down to rote memorization where you'll end up learning each familiar's spells and where they are in the command list. For example, my Mitey Mite has the "Cut Loose" spell and I already know as soon as I enter battle (if I'm going to use it) to scroll to the left twice to immediately pick that spell. That's basically how you're going to have to train yourself when it comes to your familiars and their spells: Memorization.

later on in the game, you do get a one button command to have the whole party defend. it helps a lot.

Sure. The game is very generous in giving hints, etc. about what to do almost to an insulting degree.

Sound advice as the game does get tougher and you will want to have a few levels on bosses to make sure you're prepared!

I just morphed Mitey the 2nd time and it took less than an hour to get him back up to 20. And at 20 his stats are good enough to start using him again (close to what he had at lvl 33 when I morphed him). I don't think the game is too tough. I'm playing it on normal and half the boss battles I win on the first try. The others take 2 or 3 tries. Once you get the all-out defend control it's easier, because you can usually spot a serious attack coming.

My copy arrived earlier than I thought it would. I'm loving it so far. I think this might be the game to finally kickstart my enjoyment of more traditional JRPG's. I've got so many of them in my collection that I've never played. I'm only an hour in. That hour passed by fast, though. I heard the start was slow but I'm really enjoying it. I think I'm gonna have a marathon session on this game, today.
