Unless your kid has a condition that's bull, but at the same time, a parent has too look after their child. If they see that the kid is becoming too obsessed with games, it would be in their best interests to step in.

Yup, exactly, personally I feel that parents today are either too overprotective or too lax concerning video games with their kids. It's either they care too much or don't care at all.

well this hole thing started in the early 90's when some kid who played nothing but shooting games vrought a gun to school and shot off 8 rounds and all of his shots were head shots. but to me games dont teach you any fire arm skills or any thing of that matter parents just want to blame somethin other than taking responsibility for their childs problems.

Parents need to do the parenting.

It's nice to monitor what your kids watch and play, but if you have to do it so strictly, then you're already relying on the media to teach your kids and you fail as a parent.

Parents rely too heavily on the TV to raise their children. If that wasn't the case, we wouldn't have to worry about they watch and America wouldn't be gradually getting stupider.

GameSpot did a interview a couple years back...atleast I think it was GameSpot...might've been GameInformer doubt it though.
But it was a study about something called mirror neruology(sp?). How seeing something or playing something will impact what you do.
Parents should be careful what their kids play though I do agree with that.I would never let my kids play something like GTA4.But, thats why the ERSB was set up for a reason. My parents still see me playing shooting games and think its violent. But its like the mc chris song " I would never buy a gun I would never take a life but I'll snipe you in the eye if I see that you're online."
What has always amazed me though was how games were criticized and people pointed their figures at them but television has always pertrayed way more violence. You watch a show like CSI that goes into way too much detail about murders and what not but that isn't bad. and excluding GTA4 and a couple other titles yeah you make kill people but its usually always for a cause making you the good guy. But, now I'm ranting =)

It's because they don't understand it. People are afraid of what they don't understand.

If parents played most games with their children, then they would know that almost no harm will come from those 'violent' video games.

but then you have some loser (R.I.P) commiting suicide because of a game ban. >_>

I'm not lying... this is what usually riles parents up and getting all COMMANDO all over the entertainment.

Any form of media content can make a person feel certain way.

Lot of it is because the individual has no self control or is just to young to comprehend the situation, bad parenting also doesn't help.

I have to agree that if the person is exposed to a certain amount of violence without understating the right and wrong argument, that person can go as extreme as it gets.

Video games are in minority when it comes to such issues but I don't believe they're completely safe from it either.

Okay, yes they are taking it a little to dramatically. I play violent games all the time and im still not a killer, ive held guns and ive never killed anyone with them, I listen to rap music and its never made me want to bust a cap in someones @$$.Violence has been here way before videogames or any form of entertainment for that...what happened first? WAW or WWII, COD4 or the Iraqi War,Gang Warfare or GTA SA?Who was here first? Al Capone or Jon Corleone? Its natural in humans to put the blame on something else then the obvious thing in the matter. Its always been one kid ruins it for the rest. It cant just be that that kid is crazy its gotta be the things around him that made him do it. They did it wwith movies, they did it with music, now they do it with games....eventually it will be something else and JTs and Hillary Clintons will find something else toblame a kid going crazy on...thats all there is to it...and when we are all parents we'll find something our kids do to be "too violent"

Most of what has been said is spot on!! I feel that if parents did care about what their kids were playing and telling them good violence and bad violence this really wouldn't be an issue. And to the ESRB ratings: I understand what they're supposed to accomplish but it's plain ignorance to simply look at the rating and make a decision. I have a customer at the gaming store I work at and his parents won't let him play M games because he's 16 and M games should only be played by 17+. He actually sold his PS3 because he couldn't buy any of the games that are M. That my friends is just preposterous.

some parents have a valid reason to keep games away from their kids but some just go by the rating without doing research to understand why specifically they are keeping that game away from their kid.

Example: my mother was mad at me for buying my nephew gta4. i said, "why!" she said, "because their cussing, using all that bad language"! i said, " he learned all those words plus a whole lot more listening to you!" (which is why i bought the damn thing, thinking she wouldnt care, lol)

that and the violence. but hey, the boy aint stupid he just wants to play a good game...

i think this is old news i mean there's always gonna be people who are afraid of anything they are not familiar with and cry out wont someone think of the children (Helen from the simpsons) and try to stigmatize it. people did this with comic books, mtv, and now video games eventually theyll just move on to something else that doesnt sit right with them.

Violence is everywhere ..

They like to target video games because they allow you to 'act' out the violent part ..

Parents just need to take some of the responsibility and stop blaming others or other things for their not so perfect parenting ..

i think they are too violent for certain age groups. it depends on the kid, and the game. i wouldnt buy a kid a game with senseless violence, but if a game had violence for a reason, then i'd get it for them.

its not really about the violence as to the maturity of some games; drug use, strong language, and sex are never good for kids. most parents think it really.

most kids now a days are watching suicides happen online, so i don't really think computer animated violence is all that terrible.

I second that. Being a parent myself, I understand why some freak out about the content in certain games. While I'm a bit more laid back than that (and my kids are still toddlers) I do love when parents actually give a crap what their kids are doing. There are tons of games with an "M" rating and i think they should stand by that. I don't in any way think that a game is going to make a kid any more likely to commit crimes or random violent acts, but I do think its subjecting them to situations that they are too young to understand. GTA games have always been a big deal. And, honestly, I could care less if a 12 year old wants to run around a city blowing stuff up and running over pedestrians. What concerns me is the drugs, the sex with hookers, gang wars, curse words, etc..... Not that its gonna **** my kid up or anything, just that it'll have them talking about it and wondering about it and maybe even intrigued by it. I think its ridiculous to assume a child will go out and shoot people because they did it in a game. But I think its very likely that they grow fond of the game's characters and the things they do and when a chance arrises they do them theirselves. Basically, Solid Snake smokes. I know if I was twelve I would have thought that was cool as hell and probably tried one if someone offered. Unfortunately, I was 15 and my dad chain-smoked his entire life and I was already doing the same thanks to his poor example and lack of concern. ANYWAY, I don't think games are too violent, but I do think that they are only appropriate for certain age levels. And I hope to god all parents are concerned enough and involved enough to make sure their kids are only watching/playing/doing things that are appropriate.

I hate those people who say a certain video game inspired them to do a stupid crime such as stealing a car. I bet that is just a lame excuse and either way they are complete jackasses for doing the crime and blaming a video game for inspiring them. But anyways some video games are very violent but thousands and thousands of kids play them (10+) and are perfectly sane. My point? idk....

We live in a finger pointing society where people are too stupid to take responsibility for their own actions. Everyone is babied, they hide behind things like this like spineless cowards and it's never "their fault". It's always something else that's doing this. Never, the actual world that surrounds us. No. Never any other form of medium because that would not work to their benefit as a matter of biased opinion. Everything is a band aid solution. "Blame this, case closed". People are too lazy and would live in diapers if you'd let them. Those who claim they have "rights" or have individuality have no problem making those very claims null and void when it comes to falling back on something that can't possibly be "their fault". Yet, you can't "take it away" from them.

It's all hypocritical BS that you can smell a solar system away. People want to feel "safe" in their little bubbles they create and bark out and point fingers at anything they please that they don't agree with. Demonizing them as wrong and ruining it for everyone else.

Society in itself is weak and sick. Actually in some parts, pathetic. This does have a big tie into video games. But there is a "bigger picture" apart of this too. Video Games are just one of many targets.

I think the children of today are very babied, in the 1950's - 1960's many of the parents bought the child a GUN as a present when they were like 13 years old. While the finger pointing parents are taking a away video games because of media influence.

Denji

This pretty much sums it all.

it's easier to blame games.

I don't have the link to back what I am about to say because it came in the news. The average British couple spends around 15 minutes a day with they children. 15 minutes a day people! That's nothing. Then they blame games/movies/TV for corrupting they young.

They should have spent the necessary time explaning to them what's wrong or right, and you can't do that in 15 minutes a day.

Haha yeh i must say i have a soft spot for violant games. But then again im 20, so i consider myself mature enough to play them. I think that parents shud monitor wat ther children play just as must as they shud monitor wat thy watch. But i agree tht other media effects children more than violant video games. Somtimes i think ppl use video games as a scape goat. Somtimes no matter how well a child is bough up, no matter how much ther parents monitor wat thy see/play, thy will end up doing bad things and making wrong desisions.

It all depends on the person really. In a world full of ****ed up **** video games are nothing compared to it. ****ed up **** like scat porn, hentai rape child molestation, murders, ppl killing cutting ppls heads of, ppl chopping of there nutsacks on the internet to see, ppl commiting suicides, wars, rough neigbourhoods where ppl kids get shot every mminute, gangs, random street killings, serial killers, fathers cutting sons eyes out, the list just goes on and on.

They're right as far as games being violent but I think the whole turning kids into killers thing is blown out of proportion. Having said that, I still wouldn't let my future 10 year old kid play something like GTA until he hits his teens. As long as kids know the difference between playing something in a game and acting it out in real life, I don't think parents should be that worried.

I been playing violent games since i was 11, started playing games like gta 3 at the age of only 12 .... been watching all kinds of horror/ violent movies even younger yet i turned out great.

I'm a supporter of freedom from adult censorship, but just the fact that you are aware of the existence of that sort of stuff indicates society is failing to put adequate barriers in place for minors. I don't blame the games/video makers, but there is something wrong with adults who allow young people to get hold of this stuff.

some parents thinks games are too violent and can change your mind, until make you a killer, i think theyre exagerating, what do you think?

whether gmers like it or nt, it's true... games today are a lot more violent than before... just compare Pacman to COD... but that does not justify that it can change people minds and turn 'em into violent people or killers... violence is all around us, like news on TV and other forms of edia... almost everyone is exposed to some kind of violence, but not everyone of us has become a killer...

Agreed. That's whats really goin' on. Parents don't give enough of a crap to shield their children from the mess going on in the world, but when something does go wrong they want to blame it on the games. I know two women in my family that watches horror movies with nude scenes and what not, those lifetime movies, and stuff like murder case documentaries all with their 5 and 6 year old kids sitting on the couch beside them. Now, I see no need for them kids to see that kind of crap with all its mature content, but I assure you if either of them little boys stab somebody in the face they're gonna blame it on the Wii.

Well most video games That are voilant have a M RATING! if parents would pay attention to wat they are getting for there kids then they would see that its not the game. If you are 18 and think that you can do half the s#!+ you can do in a video game then you shouldnt be playing it
