it's funny that Microsoft gets praises for "giving the consumers what they want", but when Sony decides they want to drop the price, they get hounded for it. Isn't that what just about everybody wants? so now it's a bad thing? you guys really need to get a life. is the 360 forum that boring that you can't stay over there?

The reason they did not lower the price is because they did not have to. i can assure you if Sony lower their price MS will do the same thing.

So let's just say a price cut happens soon, you're saying that the Elite will lower its price within a month or two of being out?  That kind of kills the argument of yours before about it being all about economics, doesn't it?

Yeah maybe Sony is a bit worried, but that's not the only reason why they're dropping it, they're dropping it so that more people will buy and to compete even better and the fact is if they can drop it they should they only named 1 reason why they could drop it in that article but there are 3 more.

1) Removal of Emotion Engine for Software emulation will also reduce cost

2) Removal of 20GB SKU in NA will also reduce cost

3) Blu-Ray costing less to produce by year's end and emerging as the winner

I expect a price drop on 60GB version when the 80GB version comes out during holiday seasons. I also expect games to packaged with the more expensive 80GB version possibly Resistance Fall of Man will become a packaged game once new SKUS come out. Price drop on 60GB version is coming.

Words of wisdom:

"This Holiday season will prove to be the most important for Sony - ever. If they time their price-drop to coincide with Grand Theft Auto 4 and the PS3's other AAA titles (Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet & Clank, etc.) for Winter 2007, then expect Sony to emerge as the victor of this year's Holiday season."

Same article puts the price drop closer to $50 and not $100.

Food for thought.  How coudl Sony let a story like this leak?  People who are on the fence and have done research, and I am sure they are quite a few... will surely wait to buy one now.  Bad business in my opinion.  They will lower prices for the Holiday Season, guaranteed...

$500/$550 - 60GB

$600 - 80GB

True but a price drop is innevitable to get the sales going again. People seem to forget that eh old XBOX cam eout at £399 and the price was dropped by £100 within a few weeks due to such a drastic loss of sales. £425 is just too much for a steady stream of sales. Just hope that Sony send us £100 of gift vouchers like MS did lol! (yeah right!)

And dropping £100 off of PS3 (or even taking it to £299) will not casue MS to cut the price of the 360 unless their sales suffer of course.

He never said that MS lowering the price of the Elite would not be a poor show of faith in the 360. The problem with these boards are that the Sony fanboys do half the 360 trolling. If something is wrong with the PS3 you all start pointing to the 360's faults instead of discussing the PS3's faults. If you want to troll against the 360 please don't do it on the PS3 board.

Relating to the article, I think if the price cut happens in the next couple of months it will be a sign that Sony overpriced the PS3, but at least they would be quick to rectify it.

The article clearly states "The company stressed a price cut is not imminent...".  Sony did not overprice the PS3, console consumers just aren't used to the heft of this kind of brand new tech to this degree.  The PS3 is worth every penny and then some as far as tech per dollar is concerned.

Value is relative and subjective to the individual. As you said console consumers aren't ready to pay that price and as such, relative to the main PS3 market, it is overpriced.

GIJames248

You're confusing personally perceived value with actual physical value. The market value of the technology wrapped in the PS3 is well worth retail. Whether a consumer can personally justify the price or not, the PS3 is undeniably valued well above the asking price.

Agreed. Just ask Sony how much they're losing on each unit. They are charging well below what it's worth.

Yep I am sure they are all pissed off about how much their stock has gone UP. Get a grip and head back to SW or 360. I don't believe you even own a PS3 so what brings you here?

The only time I see you post here is when you respond to something i say. You are the one that needs to get a grip.

Yes it will be embarassing to cut prices so soon if it does happen. Take an Economics class if you don't understand what i am talking about. It shows that they do not have confidence in their product hence forced to lower the price to make it more attractive.

so what do you call the Elite 360?

The writer of the article said "may". Sony said a price change was not imminent.

Embarassing would probably be posting in a PS3 forum when one doesn't own a PS3.

It's almost like tattooing "I am envious of all yall" in bright red letters on one's forehead.

You know, if this happens....the guy here who paid full price at launch is going to get even more pissed off....

Then again, if the install base grows and Sony finally gets their act together because more systems are selling, I'll be....a little happier....:x

SkyCastleDan

well i think you should be more pissed at the people who got £2500 worth of sony tv godness rather an slight price cut but i think its good people that was afarid of the price (parents for the chlidren, average joe with not much cash and the bums lol) it would sell more putting more blue ray movies out there and a bigger fanbase not that sony needs it means more future exclusives and less ports so buy people buy

That is a big lie. The old Xbox launched for 299 in the UK and dropped to 199 in 2003.

Sony denies PS3 pricecut

Added on 19/04/2007.

In the last few weeks there have been various reports of Japanese analysts predicting a PlayStation 3 price cut sooner rather than later.

For example, Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine, reported that an official price cut from Sony was just around the corner. And they predicted a change in the supply quantity as well.

Today Sony responded to these rumours:

"PS3 prices and shipment plans for the future should be determined by market trends and competition. Sony currently doesn't have any specific plan to cut the PlayStation 3's price."

Although this reaction is denying the recent rumours, we wouldn't be too surprised to see a price cut sooner than expected.
