Now, this is just the things I need before I purchase a PS3. I want backwards compatibility. Like was in place before they removed the ps2 chip. I know they have an emulator but those don't work as well in my experience. Especially when they own the chip and its a pretty minimal cost to them to add it.

I have a pretty old ps2 and I want to be able to play those games on the ps3 with no problems AT ALL. So that being said. If Sony adds the ps2 chip I will purchase it. Thats all I'm saying.

Is any one else thinking along these lines?

You can hope all you want, but they arent going to do it. If you want it that badly either buy a PS2 as they are really cheap now, or go on ebay and buy an old PS3 w/ backwards compatability.

look for a new 60 gig or buy a new ps2. I didint like putting my old ps 2 games in that beast of a machine. And if you dont have a ps3 yet then you might as well just pass. What have you been playing, your misssing out big time

Does anyone know why they took it out? I know it was to save the costs of that chip but as far as I know its relatively cheap. I consider it a nice feature to have, albeit not crucial, but I'd like to have it.

My roommate has a ps3 and I have a 360 that serves most of my gaming needs. Personally no game has drawn me in enough to buy a ps3. I bought my 360 when oblivion came out.

The new 60 gb ps3 is backwards compatible or is it just an emulator?

They took it out because Sony's slowly trying to force the last gen PS2 faithful to convert to the PS3.

At this point, it has very little to do with the cost.

Eh when adding the price of the hardware with the added costs during production, it was the only way sony could remove anything from the PS3 to drop the price because of severly bad sales in the beginning of it's lifetime. Several consumers complained so they removed what they could...

It seems that if they wanted to drive people who have a ps2 to buy a ps3 then having the ps2 chip would make it more likely to upgrade, at least in my mind.

As far as a used one goes. I'd rather support sony by giving them the money for a good product. Also I like buying new things. Sony or anyone doesn't make anything of the re-sale of old hardware/software.

That makes no sense. You will not buy a console because of the lack of backwards compatiblilty? Trust me, once you get a PS3 you should be playing PS3 titles. Sony will not be adding BC again, and if they do it will not be any time soon. You better look for a used expensive 20, 60 or original 80 gig PS3 on Ebay or buy a new PS3 and buy a new PS2 to go with it.

I'm just saying in my exact situation, I want backwards compatibility because of that.

As far as taking it up with sony, I'm far to lazy to do that. I'd imagine that they must have people that check these boards. Ultimately if they don't add backwards compatibility I'll just get a blu-ray player instead. I have nothing against the ps3 but these are my principles. Its an excellent gaming machine but I don't need it when I have a 360 as alot of the games I like/want are multiplatform.

I haven't made any decisions on buying a blu ray player so that could go either way (ps3/otherwise).

As far as the metal gear bundle are you sure that it has the ps2 chip or is it an emulator?

Not getting a system cause of lack of backwards compatibility should not really be a reason to not get a PS3, IMO of course. I hate my PS3 cause its not backwards compatible, but then I would have totally bought a PS3 for no reason what so ever. It kinda relieves me in way just cause thats less wear & tear on my PS3. My PS3 may not be getting much playtime as my 360, but that might change this year for I wanna get more games for my PS3, but the only way thats gonna happen is PS3 exclusives. Other than that, look on the bright side: It can still play PSX games still

True, there are other reasons that I haven't purchased a ps3 yet but I want to be able to play the few ps2 games that I have that can output in wide screen and yes I know about the cables I can buy but I'd rather spend the money on a whole new system rather than investing for cables for my old system. As I will inevitably get a ps3 at some point.

So let me understand: You want to be able to play ps2 games without any problem? They have a system for that and its called a playstation 2. If you are that picky about old games, then shell out the cash and get a player to play them. Your ps2 games won't be in high def, they won't have trophy's or updates so there's not a whole lot of reasons to get a ps3 with what you want. Just stick with the old system if you are sticking with the old games. When you want to *upgrade* to playstation 3 games, welcome to 2009. I'm sure ps3's will go on sale soon as a celebration.

As I already said. I have a 360 so thanks for the welcome to 2009 but I was here in 2006 fella. There are other reasons why I've not bought a ps3. But like Tikicobra said. I don't want to own a ps3 and a ps2 to be able to play games that Sony has already proven CAN play both.

I guess you're happier by depriving yourself of a TON of really good PS3 games...

Backwards compatibility is NEVER coming back.

It's not like your PS2 is broken or anything either...Geez, get over yourself.

IF you MUST have a PS3 with B/C, check Craigslists (probably the cheapest place) or Ebay. Just beware, they're not new consoles, don't have any warranties, and if they break, you'll have to spend an additional $150 to fix when you call Sony.

I didn't like the fact that PS2 compatibility was gone, but I got over it. For $80 I got a new PS2, memory card, and component cables so I could go back and play Metal Gear Solid 2/3 and the God of War games whenever I wanted to.

There's a pretty cool add-on for the PS3 that let's you play PS2 games. It's only 99 dollars now! It's called the PlayStation 2. They'll play your PS2 games with 'no problems at all'. Pretty cool, eh?

You buy and play what you want.

I got a PS3 and really enjoy it, also have my 6 year old PS2 next to it and hooked up to the same HDTV just in case I want to play one of my old games.

Why do you want a next gen system to play previous gen games? If you want bc so bad just go to amazon and buy a ps2.

People were complaing about costs so they cut the features out that don't effect the PS3 still being a PS3, just like you said to cut costs. If they put it back in the cost will go back up, and that is nowhere near where people want the price to go. To be honest it's your own fault for not picking one up when they were more expensive with all the features.

I don't see how you haven't found a game that draws you in enough to buy a PS3. You probably could have bought one by now with your xbox fees lol. MGS4, LBP, Uncharted, Killzone 2, R2, Valkyria Chronicles, etc. Now coming up is inFamous, Uncharted 2, GOWIII, MAG.... Just buy the PS3 and you won't even touch your PS2 again. Wanting BC is really a joke when you look at the games you could be playing.

and how is that?!!!!!!!! if they left the BC as it is, it would attract more PS2 owners to get a PS3.
