A PS3 user in Australia is sueing Sony for USD $748.00 ($850 AUD) to cover the cost of a laptop after the recent 'other os' lock out software upgrade.

Michael Treblicok is disabled and lives at home on a government pension. Sony have declined to settle.

NEWS ARTICLE

The PS3 in its previous software versions essentially provided him a PC with linux running and also allowed him to enjoy gaming.

However since the 'optional' software upgrade was introduced Michaels PS3 won't allow him to use features assosiated with Linux.

Now the thing that has aggrivated a lot of gamers is the choice offered by Sony isn't a fair choice.

Basically if you don't take the optional upgrade all network connectivity is rendered useless which essentially devolves the PS3 into a shiny plastic brick.

If you do take the upgrade you lose the convenience of having a PC Console.

I believe that Sony has a right to protect its intellectual property, however I believe that EVERY single PS3 owner that can prove they were fully utilising another OS on the PS3 has a right to compensation.

PS3. It only does everything.....that they let you.

Peace.

::Shrugs:: All these people suing Sony for Linux better show that their using Linux on their PS3s or it's a moot point.

Wow, it's not just the disabled it's everyone. I'm sorry if the PS3 is a "shiny plastic brick" to you. I like to use mine for it's primary function, gaming.

Anyone who actually did use Linux on PS3 would probably agree that while neat, it was a fairly useless feature as you couldn't do much anyway... Don't blame Sony, blame the hackers... at least they didn't let it get as far as MS did where there are millions of console playing pirated content out then and then hundreds of thousands of systems...

wow, and having Microsoft gain money to have people play online, or having Nintendo have you create Mii isn't abusive?

Being disabled has nothing to do with this situation, if he wants to be angry at someone then he should be angry at the people trying to hack the console, not Sony. Also, he choose to update his console, which is why he will not have a leg to stand on.

he may have updated it, but it is seriously crippled if you don't update it...also, who's to say he knew it would do that when he updated??

It doesn't matter, at the end of the day he still had a choice whether or not to update, and that's what Sony will say. I'm not saying it's right though, but it was still optional.

no, because if he ever wants to go online again, he had to update. so either way it loses features. its like having to decide between a pizza without cheese or without sauce. either way, you lose.

Good for Sony fighting for themselves. I bet that he didn't expect that one coming :) Linux was useless anyway. It was just something to brag about having IMO.
