So after the epic fail security of the biggest uproar in ages - SONY made it public that names / addresses / email addresses / logins / passwords / and possible other data was stolen.

Working in the line of work I am in - I instantly knew this is plenty sufficient for identity theft of any individual.

I then emailed SONY demanding they purchase 3 years of Life Lock for me. This only seems fair since their feeble systems were hacked and our personal information that we entrusted them with was stolen.

This is the email - and the response they sent back to me.

________________________

My email to SONY:

Since you guys have admitted that your trust has been broken and my private information containing up to and including my name / DOB / Address / Phone Number / and possibly credit card information have been compromised, I am going to require you to cover the fee of 3 years of Life Lock for me to insure I stay protected.
I have checked and Life Lock is $165.00 / year X 3 years = $495.00.
I will accept a check or a phone call so we can get this process started. My number is xxx-xxx-xxxx
If there is a problem with this please let me know and I will be more than happy to proceed with legal action as well as notifying the media to insure there aren't more people like me who feel this is a required action.

I will give you 24 hours to respond.

Thank you for your time.

Sony's Response:

Sony is not going to pay that...uh, good luck man. Right now, we simply don't know enough to be sending that kind of message to Sony.

You threatening Sony with legal action isn't going to make the situation any better. I understand that you are afraid that your personal information may have been compromised but at least wait until you notice fraudulent activity before you jump down Sony's throat.

Why would you ask for something that costly? Sony wouldn't owe you that if you actually were a victim of identity theft. That wasn't funny to read, it made me cringe. Get over yourself.

I hope one of the changes to PSN is the ability to save billing information removed from account settings. Or at least a reminder to people of how dangerous it is to have that stuff saved to a server.

 I would have sent back something much worse. "Dear customer, we usually regret situations like this but for you we will gladly make an exception to have a good laugh at this idiotic letter you just sent us. Please, refrain from making an ass of yourself in the future." Seriously, dude. This is a troubling thing going on here and we are all bothered by it, but what you requested was just ridiculous. No offense.

Yeah and I hate people who work in customer service. I mean Sony are the idiots who can't even get proper security, even though they're one of the richest companies on the face of the planet. Hwo the hell does such a big co-orp lose 70+ millions peopels worth of identity and personal info? Seriously. Everyone should sue the ass of them let alone just ask for three years worth of life lock.

I don't get why everyone thinks they need to sue or get a free gift. There is no such thing as a 100% safe network. Like some of you have said before me, if the pentagon can be hacked, then the PSN can damn sure be hacked. Sony owes everyone a safer more improved network but they don't owe you a prize or help monitoring your credit card.

Yeah except there's a difference between having a secure network with strong security which unfortunately gets hacked. And having butt ass security which doesn't even encrypt customers personal info. And that is what Sony has, that's negligence.

ShimmerMan

That's people in customer service's fault, amirite?

There is actually already a class action lawsuit against Sony, as is pretty standard fare in a situation like this. My guess is they will award everyone some sort of credit report check EVENTUALLY, but the lawsuit will probably take months to settle if not years (if the plaintiff and lawyers representing the "class" is aggressive and just looking for his own $$$ payday, which is usually what happens). So most people will probably want to check it out ahead of time anyway and not even bother worrying about the "class". Obviously whatever they "settle on" with the lawsuit, won't be for that scam lifelock, and they won't send you a check for $500 when there's no evidence of any damages against you or anyone else.

LIke if you were to sue them right now, what would you expect to win? If you could not show damages you would get nothing. At best you would get a compensation of free credit report and free credit checks, which you can get yourself for free anyway. But no lawyer is going to take that individual case when theres's no payday, which is why it will be a class action suit. Class action suits are great for the lawyer's payday, but the individual members of the class usually get some trivial award.

As "Gee_Wizz" has stated, and many others before and after, hackers will gain entry into any type of security setting. The Pentagon is one of the most secure places in the world and they have been hacked into. My uncle works for the Air Force and he says hackers are always being kicked out of servers for attempting to "gain entry into classified areas" of their records. What they do with these hacker I do not know, but they are here and prominent. Also, life lock is a scam as the previous link has already shown. Sony owes you nothing.

GEE_WIZZ

Nah dude. They will be sued (actually already are sued under a at least 1 class action) and in the end they will pony up some sort of free credit report for their widespread data breach, but it aint gonna be a scam like lifelock and it isn't giong to be $500 per person, unless an individual can actually show unrecoverable damages and directly link it to Sony.

Additionally there's no doubt Sony owes all their customers a free "gift" at the very least to show goodwill, either some of their money back or extending PSN+, a free game for all users, or whatever. Sony already said as much in one of their updates that they are considering how to go about this.

The odds of you getting anything are REALLY low, especially when it costs $500. Wait until the class action lawsuits are over and see what happens, that's the best chance we have at getting free credit monitoring.

Well I can't deny your point there but no one will win a lawsuit against them over this. I'm not condoning the practice of this, but if Sony is good at anything, it's User Agreements.

The law > user agreements. The UK is already looking at fining them, and I'm sure lawyers will come up with some legal issues to get around the ToS.

Wow that just made my night, only cause I could have not written a better reply from Sony. I write emails replys all day at work for customers and people write stuff like this. It's like trying to be all hard puffing ur chest out "like what". And I read that and say DENIED. It don't work like that pops. I wish people would not make this a big deal as it is not a big deal. Just watch ur accounts any fraud close em up change ur passwords. End of overly inflated drama.

Okay let's think about this for a second. If Sony were to offer you that service, it would have to do so to each of the roughly 77 million PSN. Since you helped me with the research and determined the service would cost $495 per head, some Google math comes out to over 38 BILLION dollars. That seems like a fairly crippling blow to an organization for a service known to have its own issues.

LifeLock isn't that good anyway, is it? I remember reading how the CEO thought it was so secure he put his social security number on the truck and handed out fliers with it on, and it turned out he got his identity stolen anyway.

Really this is sufficient for identity theft of any individual, I will go tell my grandma to change all her CC and bank account numbers around. Yeah also giving a company 24 hours to respond to a email is complete garbage because email is a 3rd world form of contact, email is usually the last thing people check in there many forms of ways to be reached.

I just keep thinking about this thread so I came back because I cant stop laughing. The thing is whoever got this message from you must have laughed as well, and thats not the problem, the problem is there are dumber emails coming in I am sure. One more thing is Life Lock is for old people that are scared of technology, most banks and cc companies offer more than sufficient security measures.

Dude are you insane? If that was the case then Sony would have to pay $495 for every psn member because you're not special you're just like everybody else so why should Sony pay for 3 years of Life Lock just for you? There is 75 million people on PSN so it would be a huge load of millions of dollars that Sony would have to pay. Just forget it and wait until they improve the security.

And that is what Sony has, that's negligence.

it does encrypt http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/04/28/playstation-network-and-qriocity-outage-faq/ research before typing from your *** :P
