"Sony has issued an unprecedented defence of its PlayStation 3 console amid claims that it is suffering from inherent hardware failure issues, and that Sony's out of warranty repairs service is inadequate."

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-tackles-bbc-over-ps3-failure-report

Quite a long read but a very good one, Sony seems to have all the bases covered in their letter after BBC's watchdog accuses Sony of defective PS3 manufacturing.

The funny thing is that Watchdog has determined that that PS3 are defective after testing 3 home console, 1 of which was altered by the owner. How's that for an investigation into faulty technical equipment ;)

The show will be on at 8:00 pm in the UK on BBC1.

well, the problem is, for some people the systems do fail just out of warranty and sony, like all companies, tends not to help. Funny thing is, the Sale of Goods Act states that items have to work for a "reasonable amount of time", and for electronic items that can be up to 6 years. However, despite the legislation in the UK, most consumers have to cough up for repairs, unless they are willing to go to a small claims court. shame really

But I agree... the failure rate of the PS3 seems about normal for a computer. I mean, how did 360 escape the wrath of BBC and the PS3 gets attacked?

Sony may not have a very high failure rate in the defective console department but they sure as hell fail in other ones....Like giving the fans what they want. Instead people get useless update after useless update.

While I get what you're trying to say, after all these are giant corporations which ultimately serve one purpose (profits for shareholders) I don't think that's really the problem here though. They seem to think that there is a defect in PS3 manufacturing process based on three units, one of which had already been altered by the owner. They're also saying that failure is comparable to another console (hint: 360 RRoD.)

agreed. the pS3 is far more reliable than the 360 and, in my experiene, the same as any other electronics

and only 2 of them were standard PS3, one of them was already faulty and the owner tried to fix it himself. I remember the days when watchdog used to be good, but recently that weakest link lady came back and they complain about EVERYTHING.

I wonder if enough people complain to watchdog about how a publicly funded programme gives out false information, would they do a piece about how it's a waste of licence payers money?

Can sony really afford to fix PS3s for free for up to 6 years? Probably not.

Watchdog is actually quite a good program. It gives me and others information on what to avoid.

I look forward to this.

to be honest, if technology was built to last, none of us would be able to afford it in the first place.

Well, if you go over to the official sony forums, all you have to do is post YLOD and peeps know what it means. YLOD is even cited in the sony letter. This is MUCH bigger than 3, more like 300,000.
