They settled out of court. Geohotz agreed to leave the PS3 alone and to not post anything else dealing with the system or ways to hack it.

At least this means we can move on to talking about the joys of gaming again, and leave this footnote to fade. Thanks for posting this, Mr. SD!!!

And, we as consumers as well as a community should take note and be more helpful in this regard. Not to roll over and become a target for consumer-sodomy by ANY means, but perhaps alter our habits and acceptance of things which have become "every-day life" like illegal downloads and other forms of tech which will only harm our future as a community.

Teach your children well, as the song lyric goes.

We are end-users, but we also have a responsibility in that arrangement, if we desire it's continuation in any healthy respect.

The question on everyone's minds now:

This is a victory for Sony, even if Hotz will not be paying them fines for the rest of his life. Sony still got what they wanted-- Hotz has been silenced, and he can no longer put out hacks for their systems. And now, they can go after anyone else who tries to pick up where he left off. Overall, this is the first step towards bringing real security back to the PS3.

@Timstuff Hotz simply distributed the keys; he was in no shape or form the creator of the hack. And the only reason Sony went after Hotz in the first place was because the little egotistical dumb-ass ran his mouth about things he shouldn't have and made everything a public spectacle (including the release of the keys, of course). Smart hackers know better. Anyway, the keys are already out there, so wrapping up this battle with Hotz does very little to remedy the over-all security issue. Hopefully the fact that Sony went after Hotz will instill some fear into those individuals who have been exploiting (or were considering to exploit) the PS3, but it would be naive of me to think that it will make a big enough impact.

I am glad this is over. It was getting too ridiculous! Especially that part where Sony was getting people's IP addresses. Serously. I can't belive the hard core Sony fans was defending Sony in taking our IP address. Now, we can actually talk about games agian!

Sony where trying to ban hacking full stop but it looks like they knew they where going to lose that part of the case, so they probably used the fact Geo released the keys as leverage to force him to accept the injunction.

It probably went like this, accept this injunction and walk away scotch free or we'll continue and you'll recieve a large fine.

What did this whole thing prove? That's what I'd love to know. I guess I can see how some may think that Sony "won" in this case, but personally I'm on the other side of the fence. The injunction simply stops Hotz from posting anything further regarding the hack. But what he has already posted is now a permanent problem. It's widely available for anyone looking for it. Now that it has hit the net, it will never go away. Such is the internet. Mr. Self Destruct, I know on the Gamespot report you said that I was looking at things the wrong way. But I don't believe I am. How has this proved anything to any hackers? Most would be smart enough not to shoot their mouth off and make it widespread knowledge that they are hacking a particular OS. In most cases, hackers keep it quiet and release info to inside circles. All this case has done is proven to them that going public with sensitive information can get you in trouble. I'm going to go ahead and say that anyone with half a brain already understands that concept. Anon are as foolish as Hotz, and will one day see themselves in a lot of trouble once their member's identities come to light. But for every member of their group, I can bet there are a hundred other people hacking OS's through the wee hours of the morning, and not getting caught because they're smart enough to keep their mouths shut about it. Sony didn't win this case. It's a case with no winning outcome. They either let him off (which is basically what happened, regardless of how you may look at it), or hit him with the full force of the law (which admittedly was very little) and end up looking bad in the general public eye, as he never once set out to maliciously attack Sony or allow piracy of games. Either way, the hack still exists with no way to stop it from makingthe rounds. I'm sure I'll hear arguments the other way, and again, I can accept the viewpoint and the thought process behind it. But I just don't see how anything was fixed with the resolution that occurred.

I'm not going to argue with you. Just read this: http://psx-scene.com/forums/attachments/f6/26802d1302540442-settlement-george-hotz-case-127-stipulation.pdf

It clearly states in this legally binding document that Hotz can't do anything to any Sony product. He can't even take one apart. If he does so or helps anyone else do so he is in clear violation of the agreement and is responsible for paying Sony $10,000.00 for every violation. He's legally bound by this and his hands are now tied. That's all Sony wanted.

This should also show any other would be hackers that they cannot just do what they want. Of course, they'll do it anyway, but they won't be dumb enough to announce it to the world next time. Because I'm sure no one wants to be in a position where changing the HDD in their PS3 could cost them $10,000.00.

If you still believe Sony lost and George won that's fine. That's how you perceive it, and I'm not going to try to change your mind.

Also, I've said from the beginning that this never would have went to court if Hotz wasn't such an attention whore. If he would have just released the keys anonymously he'd have been just fine.... We all know that this case can't put the cat back in the bag. Sony never intended to use this case to magically reverse the hack. They're not that dumb. I hope no one is. What they did do, however, was stop Hotz himself from making matters worse.

^Thanks for the link, it sheds some more light on the issue at hand. And I guess I shouldn't say that I think Hotz won. I don't think anyone "won". It's really a lose lose scenario. I'll also say I'm not looking for an argument here either. I respect your opinion. Mine is still different, mind you, but I respect where you're coming from. But I will say that if it was that easy to deter hackers, hacking would have stopped in the 80's. BTW, your sig is hilarious. What's that from?

Thanks man, for being so cool about it. ;) Hacking will never stop. That's a given. But maybe now it will be kept in the dark and behind closed doors where it belongs. Save it for the elites and the enthusiasts. Keep it out of the hands of the idiot kids who want to use it to piss everyone else off. Anyway, my sig is from Parks and Recreation. Oh WOW... that show has been in my NetFlix streaming cue for about two weeks, but I haven't seen it yet because I'm mowing though "The X-Files" (first time watching it in about a decade, I didn't realize how many I missed while out on the road!!! Great show.)

I've been wondering where you got that... I'm gonna step it up in my cue.

Hotz definitely "got off easy." Though, I don't think this changes anything in terms for Sony's views. They came to a settlement that Hotz can no longer circumvent the PS3 in any shape or form and to remove keys that was posted in his website. Not really sure what the does since I'm sure the keys have already been distributed all over the internet. :/

Well, it prevents George from doing anymore damage himself. He's a talented hacker. He could be essential in getting pass Sony's current console ban if he was allowed to do so. Of course, he might try to do that anyway, but lord help his bank account if he gets caught.
