Sony Working On The Playstation 4

Not surprised considering that the PS3 came out 5 years ago. They are working on the PS4 and it will probably take like 2 or 3 years to work on it before they bring it out. When they bring the PS4 out, it will be ridiculously expensive like $700, have bugs and will only have a couple decent games if that.

They're "working" on it. Honestly it's no brainer, sure they're researching trying out different stuff, etc. That doesn't mean it's coming soon, that doesn't mean they're gonna release it next year. It should be more of common knowledge than anything else.

Sony has confirmed that work on a "future platform" to follow the PS3 "is already under way".

Sony's executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato made the revelation on a conference call to investors today. He was asked to explain increased research and development (R&D) costs.

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said, "but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."

Kato's comments are in direct contrast those of Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai's. Hirai said, three months ago in March, that "a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now".

Hirai stressed that Sony wasn't "even at the half-way point" in PS3's lauded 10-year plan.

This console cycle may be destined to last longer than previous generations, but there are already rumours of top-tier publishing partners receiving prototype dev kits of Microsoft's new Xbox.

Meanwhile Nintendo has plans to formerly unveil Wii 2 - codenamed Project Cafe - at E3 next month.

Nothing wrong with buying a PS3 now because you have a huge collection of games, majority of the older games are dirt cheap and the system is far cheaper than launch PS3. I am no rush to buy a launch buggy PS4 for like $700 with no decent games in a couple years.

I wouldn't buy a PS4 if it were released tomorrow.. they are still releasing games on the PS2, the PS3 has a looong life ahead of it yet. The PS4, when it does eventually arrive wont have all that many games on it. I'll be playing PS3 and would get a PS4 a few years after its release, when its cheaper and has a heap of games out.Rattlesnake_8

Seems like it wont be released for a while, but hopefully we will hear something at E3.

1. PS3 came out almost five years ago. That's the average life span for a console and every PlayStation console untill now came out in six years.

2. Many devs already complain that current consoles aren't enough for them.

3. The PS3 will enjoy support even after the next console will come out (and it will enjoy many years of support anyway).

4. Most console companies start working on a new console as soon as they release one.

5. Technology must advance in order to advance games (technically speaking).

6. When the PS4 comes out it will probably cost pretty much and not have many games making the PS3 still relevant.

As you can see you're whining for no reason. Consoles last way longer than PCs anyway. I wonder how you would deal with buying a new graphics card for your PC only to find out the next month a much stronger one for the same money is comming out.

Not surprising but that doesn't mean the PS3 is done for, the PS4 maybe in development but no doubt early stages of testing. I wouldn't expect a proper confirmation and unveil of PS4 until 2013 the earliest.

I'll probably wait a while after the PS4 is released before getting it.

Thank God its coming out next year. I still have a bunch of games to get for PS3.

Nice! I also want it to be backwards compatible with PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. If it is, then it's going to make me want one at launch! lol

This is not surpising in the least. Console makers start making new hardware soon after the current on releases. Nintendo starting working on the Wii right after the GC launched. It will probably be out in 2013. I have already siad this in other topics. People keep saying that the PS3 has a long life ahead, but we are in the later years of the lifecycle. With Nintendo's new console hitting next year, Microsoft and Sony are not going to sit by for 3 years and do nothing. Look at the lineup this year. Most of Sony's first party games are out or almost done. Developers like Naughty Dog, Zipper, Media Molecule, and Evolution will work on bulding games for PS4 now that their PS3 games are pretty much finished.

Keep the cell. Just get a better GPU. Thats all I ask, oh and a late 2012/early 2013 release would be nice. gmaster456

I agree with keeping the Cell, or if modified, just barely.

I have always been befuddled by Sony's choice to put a cutting edge, 8 core processor (6,1,1 split) in a system with hardly any RAM and a weak dedicated video card.
As a PC gamer, it never made sense to me, and I feel like it is catching up with Sony now.

Better graphics, bigger hard drive, and other things... I'm sure there will some differences, but at the moment I see no need for any. I hope they wait several years before they even think of releasing the PS4.

ya they better start working key word working that dont mean itll be ready any time soon,, if they dont start now theyll be in even bigger trouble because wii 2 will already have a big gigantic lead by the time it is out if they bring it out in 2014-in the middle- wii 2 will have 2 and a half yrs on it,

if they bring it out at the latest time they can -2015 early , theyd be late by 3 yrs

so would ms , -they are on the same page almost-as they both said they are going with a ten yr life span this gen

and if they didnt start working on ps4 right now theyd take more time and believe me when i say they need to do a better job next gen this means no 600 dollar 500 dollar , consoles,

no rushed games --- they better have at least 1 or 2 killer apps at launch

and dont worry about the competition see wii ,, -nintendo never worries about the competition they do things at thier own pace and it worked for sony for 2 yrs strieght why they stopped and looked at ms i dont know but they better not do what they did this gen

1-release an inexpensive console-300-350-on par with wii 2

2-games games and games -and dont rely on 3rd party to much as they will support wii 2 and 720 -a given

the least of there worries should be power online and gimmicks -and i dont mean ones that will play good i mean like adding things like cameras -kencit caugh -- cause those may sell well as a add-on but when they are focusing on hardcore-- they need to stay with the controllers -maybe adding motion/keeping sixaxis,

but anything more then that is risking it because it hasalready been done by wii

First off, how about writing in acceptable grammar. Sony has had more original IP's this generation than Microsoft or Nintendo. Games such as Resistance, Infamous, Uncharted, Mod Nation Racers, Motorstorm, MAG, Little Big Planet, and Starhawk were all franchises that started on PS3. Third party exclusives such as Heavy Rain, White Knight Chronicles, and White Knight Chronicles started on PS3 as well. Most of sony's exclusive games are original. The only sony games that have been on previous systems are Twisted Metal, Ratchet, Socom, and God of War. The only new IP Nintendo had this generation is the "wii" title games. Even Microsoft had new IP's for awhile. Games like Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and Mass Effect started on the 360. Other than the Wiimote, Nintendo has not done anything new. You claim Nintendo are leaders, but the new Cafe system is supposed to be like 360 and PS3. The disc format is supposed to be 25Gigs like a blu ray. Who is leading who here? The move was a copycat sure. The Cafe seems to be somewhat the copycat other than the touch pad. Your assessment of Sony is twisted and your explanation are written poorly.

It won't matter cause the PS3 will still be the prodominant choice for the first year or so even with the PS4. The PS1 console and games still outsold the PS2 during it's first yr (PS2's launch lineup was horrible), and the PS2 outsold the PS3 it's first year + cause of the PS3 price and lack of good launch titles. It's a pretty consistent pattern. Even if the PS4 releases at the end of 2012 there prob won't be any need to get it until late 2013. So there is plenty of time left for the ps3. And that's just me GUESSING that it may come out late 2012. That may be very early for all i know

About time. It's definitely not too early to start on a new platform considering most cell phones releasing this summer are more powerful than the current consoles and their archaic 2005 technology.

how about working on getting PSN store back online, genius? whatever. i don't know about you guys but Sony is starting to become quite a disappointment. I bought a PS3 becoz of the flawless track record PS2 had - and judging on the same factor, i most likely won't join the bandwagon for the next gen.

Well I wont be buying it for atleast 2 years after it comes out! I'm still playing a couple games on PS2 and then I got a whole bunch left for my PS3. Plus the price for these consoles and games have gotten to high! I still take it very hard to spend $60 bucks on a game.
