Strange Noise coming from my PS3

so I'm siting there playing Red Dead Redemption id been playing for about 2 hours when my PS3 starts making loud high pitched sound like a jet engine starting me totally bemused by this saved my game and turn my PS3 off when i turned it back on it was fine no noise at all has anyone else had this if so what is it is it bad ?

i have a 40gb model it was just like a very loud fan but ive never heard it that loud before .

if you're playing for about 2-3 hors straight your PS3 might be getting hot. Try to keep it well ventilated and avoid dust build up
