Hey.

My PS3 got the yellow light today while playing Crysis 2(woho...). The game is stuck in the PS3 and it wont come out. I got a 320GB 7200RPM HDD in the dead PS3, which I have ejected from the PS3. Now I'm wondering if it is possible to backup the saves from the 320GB HDD. I really don't want to loose my saved files all the way back from 2007...

Is there any way to backup the data on the HDD?

If you've already removed the HDD from the YLOD'd unit then there isn't much you can do, as the PS3 will try to reformat the drive when you put it in a new one.

You could try to fix the YLOD'd unit and use the backup utility before it croaks again.

Cannot be done, whenever you put it into another PS3 it will require you to reformat it :|

Like Gxgear said, you'll need to try and temporary fix the YLOD and try and back up your most important saved files. Also if you try to back up your games with a usb stick some games are copy protected like Demon's Souls and Bayonetta for example.

Isn't it possible to connect it to a computer or anything to back up everything on the HDD?

Not sure how well that will go, as the PS3 won't recognize your data's association with your existing account. At the best you can use it but trophies will be locked (like using another player's save file), at the worst it won't let you use the files at all (copy-protected files).

That's messed up! It's not my fault the PS3 died today, I shouldn't have to suffer because of Sony's bad hardware... Still, I will loose my BC when i give them my fat PS3, I dont want the skinny one... I have far too many PS2 games 0.0

Edit: I also have my Crysis 2 cd inside the PS3, and I have no idea how to get it out o.O

I'll add to that the fact that you need to sync your trophies as well when you try to backup. Otherwise they'll be.....poof!

If you have PS3 units that are capable of BC, there should be a way to eject the game disk. Youtube it.

The best solution would be to fix it yourself, or take it to a local repair shop and pay a fraction of what Sony is charging.

You can open up your PS3 to get the disc out or try the fan test to force the disc out.

I have read some different threads about the cd beeing locked inside the PS3. I see that by adding a note saying that there is a game inside the consoll, and the name of the game, you will get it along with the rapleced/repaired PS3. So no harm there.

You wont lose it, they have to give you back the same console you turn in unless you choose to get a different one back in some kind of offer.

First of all, you have my sympathies. The same thing happened to me a few months ago. Like others have said, unless you can get the HDD running in your YLOD PS3, you can't recover the files. :( You could always try the YLOD fix if for no other reason than to get it to run for a few minutes to get your data backed up and your disc back out.

Also, PS Plus is worth it for the cloud saving alone.

Well you could just do the fan test now and get the game yourself.

It's being repared/replaced now. Sent it in for free through the store where I bought it. Iwill get it back in about three to four weeks. In the meantime I will just focus on school and Xbox 360. No problem for me. Just got through Gears of War. Epic game^^

even doing the backup manager you will lose your crysis2 save since it is copy-protected. Copy-protected files will not restore on a different PS3. Olnly way to transfer them is with the cloud save service

LOL, I once had a friend whose PS3 was YLOD'd, so I told him to bring it to my tech class and ask my teacher for help, so he did and that day, my tech teacher spent the whole class (about 1 hour) repairing the PS3, and in the end he actually fixed it and my friend left a happy man :P. So, try asking your tech teacher if there is one. Other than tht, I suggest watching a YouTube video. It was just a cool story I wanted to tell you.

Any idea of a list of games with copy-protected saves? Maybe I'll throw a few saves on the cloud servers since I have PSN+
