It has been announced today that RE's control setup is going to have another revamp for the upcoming RE5. It seems that Capcom think that implementing a Gears Of War like duck and cover system is the way forward for the series that helped start the Survival Horror genre.

It looks like RE's transformation from a slow paced game of survival to a adrenaline fueled action shoot-em-up is pretty much complete. I'm sure it'll be an excellent action game (as RE4 was) but this just seems like Capcom's final middle finger to the fan's of the old ways.

What is there now to seperate RE5 from games like Dark Sector (which I did like admittedly)? Not a lot my friends, not a lot.

Well, I thought Resident Evil was crap until RE4, so more power to 'em.

i've been playing resident evil from the begining and if the game needs anything its a controll over haul and to compare resident evil to dark sector is like comparing joe montana to ryan leaf those two should never be used in the same sentence and just because the control is changing doesn't mean that the game play is too resident evil is still a survival horror game and you know that camcom is going to have mind bending puzzles and boss fights that will blow our minds the game comes out in 2009 if i'm not mistaken so it's too early to judge but as a resident evil fan i'm getting it regardless

I love the Resident Evil series and it's my second favorite series after MGS and NEMESIS was like my favorite! RE4 overshoulder was great but I think RE5 shouldn't follow Gears, I think switching from overshoulder to 3rd and then first person like in MGS4 is better. They could always add the duck and running but I'd like to experience it with MGS4 3D camera and FPS.

Fixed cameras with static backgrounds, awkward controls, and back-tracking to collect one item over and over again will be sadly missed. Games SHOULD change as more and more iterations come about. By the time I finished Code Veronica, I had the feeling of DeJaVu (for the fourth time). Why do people resist change sooooo much!

Change is fine. I in fact, really liked some of the additions RE4 made. It's when a series changes so much that it barely resembles what it originally was, that is where we have a problem.

I thought RE4 was a great blend of horror and action, it wasn't quite a traditional horror game, but it wasn't quite an action game either. It felt unique and fresh. But with Capcom shoe horning in a GeoW esque run and gun / duck and cover control scheme the series has taken a few steps too far into the action genre.

The change doesn't even feel necessary. The RE4 controls were fine the way they were. What's the point of having a cover system if you're mostly fighting people wielding melee weapons? What's the point of drastically changing the controls if the gameplay itself isn't making any huge leaps? It just seems like a stupid and redundant decision.

Dare I say this?

I think Resident Evil 5 will basically be Resident Evil: Extinction in videogame form.

Well I've only finished part one of the series and I enjoyed that thoroughly. I got to play a few bits of RE4, and the change in persective worked well for the game, imo. From what I've seen, RE5 looks like an awesome game, but I can say it's not looking true to its roots...

Off-topic, will RE5 have online multiplayer?

I was going to get this game regardless because I loved RE4, but I guess I don't really need to get Gears of War 2 now since the mechanics will probably be very much the same. I imagine RE will be more fun for me with the inventory and everything. I'll probably be getting Dead Space for a more true survival horror game.

Seems like everything is going the way of the shooter these days, even RPGs.

Personally, I think Resident Evil has changed their genre, from survival-horror to plain action. I don't say that's bad, I liked Resident Evil 4 as much as I liked the older ones, but it really ain't the same.

One bad thing about RE5 I've noticed by watching game-play movies, is, that it looks like RE4. Really, it doesn't look like RE4, IT IS RE4. The same camera, same monsters, same knifey-thing slash. Of course there is the better graphics, a co-op girl, some punches available to do, and some ducking and covering - But it's pretty much the same thing.

In terms of gameplay, I really feel that the RE series has consistently moved forward with bigger and better ideas each installment. I'm pretty confident that RE5 on the PS3 will follow suit as well.

I'm expecting this game to be nothing short of Breath-Taking.

Previous RE games were like trying to use a controller for a "point and click" game and it was a chore. RE4's controls should've been like that all along. RE1 to RE:CV should've been played with a mouse. RE4 was optimized to actually USE a controller.

You'd think people that refer to others they don't know anything about as 'kids' would have more maturity than to make random assumptions about people, wouldn't you? ;)

Much like how kids compare everything to Halo like nothing existsed before Halo. If that was all you've seen for more than 2 or 3 years on the net, then you can "assume" considering that's the majority of those "ideals". You assumed that I was insulting you and you automatically played the "maturity card". What does that say?

i created an argument! :D

well halo did kinda bring new things to the fps and was original until 2 and 3 milked it for it was worth. kids use halo as an example probably because that the only thing that gives them something they havent experinced yet. as a 15 year old i have met people my age who havent played much (or none) earlier consoles like sega genesis or super nintendo. im sure when the past generations thought sega they thought sonic and snes, mario. because its something original, a little like halo.

its like 12 years ago but instead of sonic or mario, its halo.

It wasn't really all that original. There were many big franchises that were doing things Halo did a long time ago.

I think that the controler revamp is not bad. But what they should recheck, and return to the old days is the following:

  • Puzzles: And hard ones, not "turn the piece to unlock" yeah, really hard  They need to be hard, as the IDs in Dino Crisis
  • Limited amount of ammo. Its really easy to finish RE4 in PRO and even have a ton of ammo in your inventory. On the other hand, finishing an older RE in PRO was a real pain, and required a lot of thinking, whether to shoot, or run by.
  • Mix action with real suspense, dark rooms as the ones that were seen in the trailers seem like a good thing. But they need to return to the small passages to in some areas, since they restrict more the movement
  • Dont let us buy Med Sprays, even at a high price, if you can buy them, it takes from the surviving factor. Limit them so that we have just a number enough to comit a couple of errors, and not a whole lot of them.
  • We need more back moaning, something to keep our senses up, zombies in the vecinity, etc.

don't worry guys, I'm sure there will be an option to play the game with bad controls somewhere in the menu.

I don't think they're going to use a cover system either. they said they'd be more like Gears, not the same ones from Gears.

I like the old games, I like the new games, but they can't be stuck in the past with tank controls in 2008, I trust Capcom as they have rarely failed to entertain me. RE5 mine on day 1.

Personally i dont care what the new controls are, just as long as the game grips you by the throat and gives a great story then i wouldn't care if we saw shotguns with chainsaws on the end.

I am a old RE fan and i have played all of the major games and some of the spin off games and even i have to admit that sometimes its better to move on with the ages then stay in the past.

topic title is funny...

well, i liked RE4 but as an action game. it didnt have any Survival or Horror theme... there were alot of ammos everywhere, plus a shop follows you everywhere and there were not a single scary moment...

i'm not against new controls, i enjoyed older games but RE4 showed us new things are better but new controls shouldnt mean new gameplay which is plain action... it should have an eerie setting instead of sunny town which is just "dirty" to be eerie. it should have deformed humans, showing their bloody muscles, bones under their skin, not just paled humans. also if this is new generation, it should have flood of zombies that you cannot kill them all even with rocket launcher cleaning, so it will be horror, survival experience instead of action that you can clear all enemies...

i agree with person who says RE5=RE4, though its early, yea maybe we should replay RE4 instead of wasting our money so maybe capcom can realize what are they doing. i cannot see anything new in re5, new controls are not enough

(i'm not racist most of my familly is black and my best friend is black ye can say what you like i don't care)
