What a ridiculous post, just because people play games, doesn't mean they don't exercise, I play rugby, most people I know on this board do some form of daily exercise, just because you are a lazy sloth, don't blame gaming, blame yourself.

My video game habbit has gone done like 80% in the last 2-3 years. I rarely play a video games anymore unless it's really good or it's spur of the moment thing. It's not anything near my Goldeneye playing days when I would go on a tear and that's a good thing because if it was then I would be in pretty bad shape. But up until about 3 years ago I played baseball for 8 years and I was in really good shape until I tore my MCL. But I still stay in pretty good shape, but nothing like I used to when I killed my stairmaster. So yeah, I won't let it get that bad. And this is the end of my long rant lol

Dangers of being a gamer?

I'm 26, and I've been gaming since the NES days. I am and always have been a very dedicated gamer, yet I find the time to run my business, work out, hang with friends, family, have a social life, and do everything else that life requires.

What you face today is not the dangers of being a gamer, it's the dangers of not taking care of yourself. It was your choice to neglect your well being, and that's why you suffer today. The blame belongs on you, not video games.

I don't mean to be a dick, I'm just saying what needs said. I hope everything works out well for you, just don't use video games as your excuse.

Good luck.

Very good point. I could see gaming have something to do with it, but it is kind of a choice of lifestyle. Hell I'm 15 and I worry about my health. I always ride my bike places and hang out with friends, but I'm not a very healthy eater. I don't know I'm just ranting but I've got to get my act together.

There are some dangers to being a gamer. I guess if you play a lot and aren't in the best shape playing a video could give you a heart attack but thats just because videogames significantly increase your heart rate...but so do many other things...like everything. If you aren't in good shape probably anything could kill you,....even PILLOWS (heheh, saw that news article).

Well said. I'd also like to add on, people don't fool yourselves with crap like Wii fit. If you wanna get healthy, get off your asses and go and exercise.

I am a 35 year old male. I've been a gamer since 1985 when my parents bought me a NES. And now in 2008, the greatest year ever for gaming, my gamer lifestyle may ruined or potentially ended my life. I am suffering from chest pains and other signs of a heart attack. I also suffer from stress and panic attacks which brings on those same signs. I go to see a doctor on Monday, but if things get worse, I am rushing to the ER, thankfully just a mile away.

Heart attacks are the number one killer out there, and the scary thing is plenty of guys my age are getting them, and even guys in their 20s. I used to think you had to be 50 or older before you started worrying about that stuff, but my gamer lifestyle has put me at risk. While I was quite active as a child, my adult years have consistented of working at a desk job all day, coming home, relaxing to tv and gaming. Little exercise, and not much fruit and veggies in my diet. I may be paying the price for this already, and God, I hope I am not. I read a recent Time article that said kids are more senditary now than ever b4, and they are already showing signs of clogged arteries and diabetes.

I am writing this point to urge you guys to please get off your butt, and go do some good cardio exercising. You are hurting your body by sitting in front of the tv for hours on end. I read posts on here about people beating new releases like MGS4 within days and you can't tell me that you did this while spending most of the day being active. Eat well and exercise a lot. You don't want chest pains. IT is a horrible sensation that I would not wish on anyone.

The TC does have a point though, games can kill you not only physically, but emotionally as well, it can cause some strange, violently behaviors as well. mentally also, sometimes people be like oh video games is more important than getting good grades in school, so i have to play more hours on the system. not trying to be a dick, but have you ever thought that, thats how addictive video games is now days,. be honest though. but anyways beside for that point, you know alot of video games are very addictive and hard to get over from, such as uncharted, mgs4, ratchet & clank tod, mlb 08 the show, and the list goes on and on, do you find it in yourself, saying no i must stop playing video games and start doing an excerise or a routine, i admit for myself as well, sometimes i get offers and challenges from somebody to play some kind of sport or activity with me whether its basketball, football, etc. and i say no to them just so i can play my ps3 and beat a so called video game such as mgs4, video games can become extremely addictive, thats the problem, sometimes it can be difficult to let go, i dont meant to be an ass, but its harder than you think to quit a ps3 "game" and to go outside and play, im not trying to be sarcastic either, its really pretty tough. most of you say no either by being sarcastic, or overly confident saying itll never happen, we got to face reality, video games can sometimes lead to a downfall depending on what your daily schedule is, not only on the health, but emotionally and mentally as well.

Yeah, I defintiely have a social life (maybe too much $$). i play ball every day and try to work out at least once or twice a week. I go in spells of working out hard and then slowing down, but I still try to hit up the bball court once a day. Gaming is honestly a nitely thing for me where I can relax and game out while I'm chillin. I honestly should curb some things I do in life, but its not gaming or the lack of exercise, I mean...gotta be in shape to get those ladies right?

There is nothing bad with being sedentary for a couple of days. Its bad if you are like that for long terms, meaning years. There is no new stuff here, this thing is as old as man itself. Im sorry for what happens to you, but every thing that you do in excess is an addiction, thus an illness. Self control is what differentiates humans from animals, if you cant control yourself, you are no better than an animal following its instinct. I walk 8km every day, I always walk from my university which is 8km away from my home, it takes me 1hour or maybe 1:30 to do the whole thing, but it keeps me in shape (not that Im an athlete). And people should stop eatink crap all day. Ive cutted a lot of meal kinds and reserved them for special occassions.

I'm sorry to hear about the TC's problems, but this isn't an issue of video games. This is an issue of addiction and an unhealthy life style. There is absolutely no danger inherent in playing video games. The danger is in neglecting health, and you can get that from all sorts of things. People are just incredlibly lazy, incredibly negligent and completely unable to manage their own lives properly.

Its not gaming (although you can say it is or it isnt)

America in the last two decades have become the most obese society in the world cause of fast food, lack of exercise and dare to say it desk jobs (wow you sit on your bum 8-9 hours a day).

That's a bummer. But you can't really blame it all on gaming. It could have had something to do with it, but that might not be the only factor. If you want to still play games and get exercise you might want to think about getting a Wii (Yeah, I said it. Go ahead and flame me.). Wii sports can be a workout if you get really into it. I haven't played Wii Fit yet, but it's supposed to be pretty fun. Of course it's not the same as actually getting outside and exercising, but if it's raining it might make a nice substitute. Hope you don't have any more complications!

Wii fit is the biggest crap ever. I mean, its fun when you used it for the games, but as an exercising gear its not good by far. Also Wii isnt good for exercise. Play all you wont, its still not good enough with the Wii since its centralized in arms movements. The WF doesnt recognize when you are doing the exercise bad, since all it cares about is presure spots, so you could actually hurt yourself, or you could end up doing all that for nothing.

Just go to a gym, they are disgustingly cheap get a PT for a couple of classes, and then start doing some routines that you see comfortable, as maybe walking. Using stairs instead of elevators, doing pushups when you get up from bed and similar stuff. But dont use the Wii or Wii fit as a training replacement.

lol im almost 37. Im down in Florida right now. I live in ohio.

Just ride on of these once or twice a week as you get older. On a decent track. And you dont even have to be good, just do it. Everything will be fine lol. And youll feel like your 20. Works better than any training machine I use off the bikes.

Another thing I found out on this trip, is wifi routers drag. Ive used one the whole trip.

[QUOTE="moshakirby18"]Dangers of being a gamer? More like dangers of over eating and lack of exercise...420Token420

QFT

I quote this QTF for ultimate truth!

I have no problems at all. I eat healthy (lots of fruit ,vegetables, I don't eat (much) "rich in fat" food, I sometimes eat to much cookies and sugar but not everyday always. I don't drink Sodas (no more that a few a year)), I do sports, I get out of my house and I have a social life.

And I have time to game

The Dangers of Being a Gamer...no.

I dont think he was trying to spread the message that being a gamer is dangerous. He was just trying to get our butts off the coach and exercise. As a gamer, I cant say that gaming doesnt affect my habits. It does. It actually has a significant impact on my daily routine. Sometimes, instead of going out to play basketball or go to the beach and surf, I'm home playing video games. Granted, all this is our own faults, but dont you find it hard to miss a night of MGS4 or Gears of War online? Or perhaps a new game you just purchased? There are nights where I'm pinned to the television screen surfing gaming websites, reading up previews and any gaming news I can get my hands on. Not to mention, forum posts and blogs. The TC makes a great point, it can become dangerous and he doesnt want the axe and the hammer to hang over our heads.

Gaming is a strong force. It's an addiction. For some it's uncontrollable, for others it's casual. For some it's undeniably habitual. For all you know, you may think that you're healthy but you're not. Just because you're fit, or skinny, or not overweight doesnt mean anything, any more. You would be surprised how many "fit looking" people have some of the worst blood pressure, high blood sugar, and even high cholestoral levels. Sitting long hours in front of the TV, playing games or surfing the web will really ruin your eyes. And what happens to your muscles and bones? Inactivity = old age crippledness. Do what the man says and get out more. Get active. Get fit. Get life.

P.S. You'd be surprised how much more you'll love gaming when you dont spend all your time playing them. You'll appreciate it more and you wont get as bored. Too much of a good thing can be bad guys.

Elann2008

that is very true. thank you for the advice jeffbase33.

I work out 4 days a week, both with weights and cardio.

I do not spend more than 2 hours a day playing PS3, and most days I play a couple of games of Fifa 08 and maybe bang out a few tunes on Rock Band.

I am not one of these people that can sit in front of a tv all day and play games. I like games, but I like staying active too.

I took me a month and a half to finish COD4, and about the same time to beat Uncharted.

I agree with both these guys. There is no one to blame nut yourselves. Take responsibility. Again TC, hope all turn out for the better, but after this is over with, really think about your health and eating habits a lot more.

well im am a very advid gamer and i play more then most people i usually play almost all day if i dont have to go to work but before i start gaming i workout. take about a two mile run every other day and do about 80 pushups and about 400 crunches a night. also the only time i let myself eat what i want is on the weekends but during the week i stick to a strict diet. so just take care of yourself and put your health before gaming and you will be ok.
