Just got a fantastic message on my PS3 "The hard disk's file system is corrupt and will be restored".  I press X to restore it.  I wait.  The machine reboots and I get a message that reads "The hard disk's file system is corrupt and will be restored".  I press X to restore it.  I wait.  The machine reboots and I get a message that...

Well you get the picture!

damn that sucks, did you put any data from a flash card, usb onto you ps3 hdd?

you have two options, tell sony and get it replaced (thought they might no, as they might say you did it and are responsible)

or you can rebuy a laptop hdd at about $150 aus

No I didn't put anything on it at all.  Everything was working fine then today I went to play the Everybody's Golf 5 demo and nothing.  Just a "Now loading screen...".  I rebooted the machine and it powered up so I tried the demo again.  Same thing.  Then I rebooted and that was it HDD dead.

I've got a replacement drive for it I can pick up from work _BUT_ I might use this as an excuse to get a 250 GB SATA drive I've been drooling over.

Oh well as they say shiet happens...

i just put in a western digital 120gig(90bucks-take that 360 owners) took ten minutes to install. oh and make sure you have several small screw drivers. IT IS VERY EASY TO STRIP THE HDD CASE SCREWS!!!! static electricity or a lightning storm could have killed it. keep it off the floor, and get a good surge protector.

the now loading screen for Everybody's Golf takes longer than you would expect. When you say you rebooted it from that screen, did you turn the switch in the back or did you shut it down from the front or controller??

yea the loading screen at the beginning of everybodys golf does take a little while. Theres no telling but if you turned off the system during that part that could have been what messed up your hdd....But in the end who cares right? If you get that new hdd youve been "drooling over" itll be worth it! haha...

Just purchasedanother Hard Drive. The instructions in how to install it are in your manual and it does not void your warranty.

Switching off the power from the from the loading screen (while it's accessing the demo save file directly from the HDD) can corrupt your hard drive. It's like pulling the plug while a computer is writing to a hard drive, data corruption is going to occur.

Did you download something from PS Store right before it happened? Becuz my screen went black, but probably a different story...... Call Sony first, cuz it might just be something that you downloaded and it may not be anything wrong, it seems...... Hope you get it fixed.

My 20gig failed recently. It started off with movie downloads that skipped and paused a lot. Then some random things where it suddenly took forever to load a game or a demo that took 10 times longer to install than it did to download. Eventually it lost all data and reformated it, then I used it a bit more but eventually the new files started corrupting until total failure.

It finally gave me an excuse to get a new HDD. Here's a 120gb for $69.99 ($80 when I got it) and was a breeze to install:

Luckily I had micro screw drivers from radio shack that I got years ago to do the afterburner light mod to my gameboy advance and it was still possible to strip the screws if you didn't pick the perfect one and applied enough pressure the first try.

Could it be because of the position you place the PS3 on? My PS3 is vertical so I wonder if the people who are getting problems are the ones that put the PS3 on the vertical position.

That also happened to me. Lost a 30 hour Oblivion game. What's worse was that I lost my will to play as I had already played 60 hours on the 360 and I bought it again for the PS3 when I was ready to start again, so to lose it all I just can't get myself to start over for a 3rd time.

I have a replacement 60 GB drive turning up today.  On Monday I'll probably go buy the Western Digital 250 GB I've been looking at.

To answer some of the questions above about how this actually happened it went like this... the machine was running perfectly, I lined up quite a few movies to download from the Japanese PSN store.  I let these download and went off and did other stuff.  When I came back I watched a few of them.  I then decided to play Everybodys Golf again I fired it up and I got the now loading screen.  It stayed like that for ages. and I mean I left it for 10 minutes plus.  I pressed the PS button on my controller to turn it off.  It didn't work the machine had locked up hard.  I tried powering down the machine from the the front of the console all that happened was the machine sat there with the green light flashing at me and it wouldn't power down.  After a few minutes of waiting for it to power off I was forced to turn it off at the back of the console.  When I powered it up again it booted as per usual, I tried Everybodys Golf again and I had the same issue.  I was forced once again to power it off from the back.  When the machine came back up the HDD had died.  Not much I could have done about this so yeah whatever...

To answer a question above my PS3 has been in the horizontal position since the day I bought it, I haven't moved it since the first day.

I work for an IT company and I've seen many HDDs just up and die in hardware (PCs/notebooks/servers) before.  I kind of find it amazing that some of the people here think this is something that could just happen from user error.  This just isn't possible with any modern hardware that uses a journaled filesystem.  Not that I have any idea what the PS3 uses for a filesystem, but if they aren't using a journaled filesystem I'd be absolutely amazed.  I checked the PlayStation.com official forums and this has happened to many people, some people even had this happen to them the first time they powered up the machine.

Finally to the guys talking about Oblivion I have an external USB drive cradle here (kind of like a drive enclosure but it just has a heap of connectors on the end and no enclosure, we use these at work with multiple types of drives) and I am going to see if I can get the data off my drive.  If I can't I'll give up on Oblivion until we get some downloadable content.  I've played over 100 hours on the 360 and 50 on the PS3 I don't think I could just start again.  Oh well what can you do?

Hopefully the next couple of hours go buy quickly I'm getting that I need to get fragged feeling (yeah I suck at R:FoM).

Just after the 1.80 update my PS3 wasn't connecting to my wireless network properly anymore, it would connect/disconnect/repeat... I wonder if that was the first symptom of a bigger problem?  That is the first time I recall my PS3 losing it a bit... oh well whatever, I just hope it doesn't happen to any of you guys out of the blue.

Sorry to hear that. It really does sound like there's nothing you could have done then. Makes me wonder what could have caused it to lock up like that.

As far as the disconnecting, a lot of people have been mentioning that issue since 1.80 so I think we can rule that out as the first symptom of something bigger.

I picked up a replacement drive today.  The stores I checked had no 250 GBers in stock so I got a 160 GB drive.  I'm pretty happy actually I installed the drive and all of my user accounts were still enabled, so the PS3 must keep user details in flash (or some other solid state storage).

Either buy a 500 GB HDD for your needs or call Sony and I seriously think that they will compensate for your loss.

You learn something new everyday. I just learned about notebook harddrives. Get a 100 GB HDD.

heres the funny thing, when u get that message, error HDD needs to be formated press X to continue, and it looks like it formating, and then it comes full circle to that message again. ive had this happen to 2 customers and , i took their HDD out and put it in another ps3 , and when i popped it in, that ps3 didnt recognize it and it did a full format on it. then i took it out of that ps3 and put it back in the original and it worked. this happened 2 times , odd, but if you have a friend with a ps3 try that.
