I dont know how long its been since i last read a game manual usually i just flick through it once for the artwork

So is there really any point to things other than to satisfy casuals and reviewers?
Usually if i want to know something from a game its something more in-depth like finding out damage multipliers and the math behind RPG's wich can only be found on pro-fan sites and gamefaqs :P

I can't remember.. it was back when i was 4 years old i think  .. but i like some of the manuals that has character describtions, and some even have a little story to start you of on, telling you about what has happended up untill the game starts.

Most games ill take a quick look at the manual. Ofvourse manuals just arn't the same as they used to be -- maybe im just getting older but it seems that thesedays you learn more about how to play the game by simply starting the game as it holds your hand for the first hour or so ... or has generic controls which require no explaination ...

I still own a few 1 by 1 meter foldup maps from older RPG games, these days they call that collectors editions and charge you 15$ extra for it.

I want them to keep the manuals. I think of them as a collection item, plus they fill up the case. Like an accessory so to say. But the last time I read a game manual? I take a skim through everytime I buy a new game.

I learned a couple of things about free kick taking in PES6 for the PS2 from the manual. Namely, holding Triangle or X to add/decrease power behind a shot. Don't remember anything before then!

Hmm, I wonder what made you think of this? lol

But I do like to atleast glance through a manual once before I play something (although most games past the Snes era have tutorials at the start of the game anyway), also games like Final Fantasy game a bit of backstory which I like to read. But yeah...in the internet age we don't really need them unless it's just to show off some cool artwork (like the CE of DMC4 CoD4 etc)

I've learned that game devs need to hire tech writers. The manuals are anemic. I always look forward to reading a manual to learn the controls, story, characters, and weapons in a game. You'd be lucky to find manuals at least 20 pages long. The thickness of the manual is a sign of what the game may be like (for me anyway). If it's a thick book like say Uncharted's manual, it will be a great experience. If it's thin like say Madden 08's manual, well you get the hint.

Good topic. The last thing I learnt from a manual was how to quit a game on a PS3. Some of them aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

I bought FIFA 08 and it's the first time I've bought a FIFA title in 5 years. If you read through the manual there's a ton of stuff in the game that isn't mentioned in the manual. The writers have obviously and wrongly assumed you've been playing FIFA all your life!!

Sorry for posting twice but who here remebers the original Gran Turismo manual? It was as thick as War and Peace. Please if somebody still has it post a pic those who have'nt seen it before won't believe their eyes.

Hey I figured it would make for a more amusing topic than "rumor: PS3 will self destruct on 08/08/2008"
I thought the PS2 boards were a mess but these are equally bad. :(

I dont read manuals anymore. All games use the samer controls.

Others... Oh well, its fun trying to find out the controls. Did that with COD4. Quite a few times I forgot that L2 AND R2 did grenades. Many times I had to resart missions for killing an ally.

I read the manual for Oblivion but it didn't help me much.

Mass Effects' manual wasn't helpful either. Unfortunetly the game didn't have much of a tutorial either.

I always read the manuals for everything... even a couple of times.

You know that feeling of a being a boy with a brand new toy?? well, that's me, and I like being excited with every purchase I make, so reading the manuals is more of enjoyment than it is informative.

Plus, it's good for those long minutes in the bathroom ;)

I remember that I read the manuals for my N64 games, brought them to school and stuff ^^ Last good manual I read was for Neverwinter nights, it beats gran turismos manual easily, NWN2 manual was a disappointment though. The only game I have needed a manual for in recent years have been Forza 2, but its manual doesn't say anything, so I still have many question marks about what different symbols mean and stuff.
