Since that other thread has basically run its course and because we feel that there should be some guidelines in place to better help everyone understand what topics are and aren't allowed to be discussed outside the sticky, we decided to replace the old sticky wth this one. Hopefully this one won't devolve into a mini-System Wars of sorts (which I hear is what happened to the last one). If it does, we'll... do something about it, probably.
So, guidelines!
All matters regarding the breach and outage are to be discussed here, and here only. This means news articles or updates on the situation should be posted here. Any new threads made for such things will be locked on sight.
Questions, concerns, or whatever regarding securing your personal info should be posted in Jody's thread. It'll be easier for everyone if we keep that a separate subject. You can talk about it here, of course, but it's much preferred that it stays in the aforesaid thread. That way it'll be easier for someone to answer you.
Anything else distantly related to the outage can be posted outside this thread. So, for instance, aksing how the outage has effected your gaming habits would be acceptable. Most of the big topics would have to be discussed here, granted, but we figure a little leeway won't hurt.
Capiche? Good. Now, updates! (This area will be updated as more updates become available.)

New firmware available
We have been working on a new PS3 system software update that requires all PSN users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. The update (v3.61) is mandatory and is available now.
If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.
We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

Japan to be the first to get PSN back up, other regions to follow
On a Japanese corporate message board, the company said it was "sorry indeed" for the "continued failure" of its gaming network, but said it would also restore service one a piece by piece basis.
"As we said the other day regarding the future of the service and its restart, restoration will be conducted in stages on a regional basis to ensure the safety of our customers," the company said.
It went on to say, "We are preparing to be able to resume service as soon as possible in Japan, and are now entering the verification stage for ensuring the safety and security of the network."
The statement seems to say that it will restore service by region, and that Japan would be first. Representatives did not respond to requests for clarification.
PlayStation Blog says PSN maintence will last "at least a few more days"
I know you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, I can't give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.
Sony offers free year of identity protection through Debix, Inc
Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment International have made arrangements with Debix, Inc., one of the industry's most reputable identity protection firms, to offer AllClear ID Plus at no cost to PlayStation Network and Qriocity account holders for 12 months from the time an account holder registers for the program.
...
The details of the program include, but are not limited to:
Cyber monitoring and surveillance of the Internet to detect exposure of an AllClear ID Plus customer's personal information, including monitoring of criminal web sites and data recovered by law enforcement. If his/her personal information is found, the customer will be alerted by phone and/or email and will be provided advice and support regarding protective steps to take. The customer will also receive monthly identity status reports. Debix works with an alliance of cyber-crime experts from the government, academia and industry to provide these services.
Priority access to licensed private investigators and identity restoration specialists. If an AllClear ID Plus customer receives an alert, or otherwise suspects that he/she may be the victim of identity theft, the customer can speak directly, on a priority basis, with an on-staff licensed private investigator, who will conduct a comprehensive inquiry. In the case of an identity theft, the customer can work with an identity restoration specialist to contact creditors and others, and take necessary steps to restore the customer's identity.
A $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user to provide additional protection in the event that an AllClear ID Plus customer becomes a victim of identity theft. This insurance would provide financial relief of up to $1 million for covered identity restoration costs, legal defense expenses, and lost wages that occur within 12 months after the stolen identity event.
PSN up for developers (maybe for us, too, soon?)
It's baby steps for PlayStation Network, with developer sources informing me the developer version of PSN is online. Whatever steps Sony took to get PSN up and running, however, has broken some pieces.
Right now, developers are unable to register new accounts on PSN, only perform a recovery process on individual accounts. The problem? In order to facilitate testing, developers often created many, many dummy accounts with fake personal information. In order to recover an account, you need to know the personal information entered when the account was created. No surprise: most didn't write that down.
Here's some supplimentery material regarding the password change prompt courtesy of Xx-Addict-xX:
To clear up confusion and everything:
- When you can log on, this mean when the PSN is back up in your area. It seems that the US and Japan are only ones up. When you click 'Sign in' it seems password must be changed. You type in a new password and you done. You don't need old password, you don't need you e-mail to be activate. For instance, my e-mail is old and i can't even acess it. It doens't matter.
-After you change password you can log in!
-NOTE: PS Store is still down and will be for atleast a few more days. So once that is back up, you can get free games, PS+, and any other Codes for stuff once it comes back up. The free PS+ starts when you can DL it. Which will be when the PS store comes back up.
-Thanks
