Ever since I played Oblivion, I don't think I could switch back to Final Fantasy. I like the Sandbox effect Oblivion offers. Also any other RPG with the classic combat type "turn" combat system would just bore me.

Now im looking more into Lair and The white knights story. How about yo guys? Are you drifting away from the older style Rpg's?

I think they are completely different games, Final Fantasy is totally centered on the main story, kind of like a movie, Oblivion is more like an MMORPG.

I hated oblivion so the answer to your poll is yes but the opposite of what I think you intented.  Trying oblivion has just made me realize how much I prefer jrpgs.

I always liked the Oblivion type of RPGs over FF's style that's one reason why I also like MMORPGs a lot because they give that type of freedom and stuff, but FF  is still great.

Played it, hate it already. JRPGs are much better, and FF stands on a level of its own in that genre. I have only liked 2 WRPGs and they are Fable and KOTOR 2, but aside from those, I prefer a good JRPG.

oblivion didn't really change my view at all, actually after playing FF XII that one changed my view a little bit, i never thought it was possible to so seamlesly integrade RPG depth in such a quick paced fight.

FF is much more high quality.  I enjoy a game with an intricate story line, well developed characters, and a great battle system, none of which will you find in Oblivion.  Also FF has a whole lot more artistic talent coupled with better programers that really bring the ideas to life.

Dont get me wrong I do like Oblivion, but years down the road I will still remember my favs from the FF series.  Oblivion is a good game that will be forgotten quickly ( in comparrison of course ).

And what you said about turn based boredom.  You must be new to playing Oblivion, cause trust me, you might think its fun now but it gets old real quick.  *run backwards block attack repeat for infinite*. As were FF in comparison requires at least some level of thought and strategy

If you took away the massive map, Oblivion would be a horrible action game and would most likely be considered to broken of a game to sell.  Im not trying to take away from the fact that the sandbox style map is awesome, but thats about it.

Well, if you can't go back to turn base that's okay because there are TWO  final fantasy games coming the PS3s way.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII is an action RPG that will be similar to Kingdom Hearts style gameplay, which means you'd be in full control of your character at all times during battle except maybe for reaction command instances if they implement them in this one *Really hoping they do*

I am such a die-hard Final Fantasy fan that I couldn't even envision the possibility of dropping the franchise. If it was the only exclusive that Sony had, I would still be forced into buying the system since I need to play every edition of the game (with the exception, perhaps, of XI).

When I played Oblivion for the first time I was convinced it was going to be the best game I would ever play. However after doing the same quest after the same quest (usually involves going into dungeon, killing person, taking person's item, give item to another person) I really didnt have any motive left to complete all the quests. With final fantasy I ALWAYS play it to the end, the storylines are fantastic and you really do grow attatched to the characters. Most the oblivion characters P****ed me off, and I would always find them annoying.

And a note to the TC.  Who are you kidding man,  am I really supposed to believe that a person who owns a PS3 and was once a FF fan wont buy FF13 knowing its gonna be the biggest game to hit the console besides maybe MGS4.  Ill admit that I own a 360 yet I cant stand Halo or Gears, but considering I was never a fan to begin with that makes sense. But your story makes no sense whatsoever.

No I could never leave Turn-based combat. Action and Turn-based are still amazing types and I love them equally. After I played Oblivion, I think I enjoyed Final Fantasy a lot more.

They're two very different RPGs and I like them both. Oblivion is great because it's one of the few good games that actually lets you play the role of the character. In most RPGs you control a main character, but you aren't really him or her. It's fun to feel like you're a part of a world and that's a feeling I don't get out of FF games (except XI). However, I love the characters and plot of the Final Fantasy series, so it's still better. Both are great games.

its actually quite hard to pin oblivion to rpg as its alot like gta only in the past obviously there is a main story yes but don't have to follow it at all

where final fantasy games follow trhough like a movie from start to the end so its up to what typ eof person you are i like both

i like the stragtic parts of planning a attack against a boos (ff) and i like fighting in the moment (obilvion and sudeki)

Actually Oblivion can be pinned as an RPG because Oblivion follows the same suit as MMOs. An open world where you do a lot of quests and missions and there is a story but it doesn't necessarily have to be followed. The only thing is that Oblivion isn't an MMORPG it's just an RPG.

FFXII was probably the furthest from turn based the series has ever been. They are moving towards real-time combat but there are disadvantages to the wide open, sandbox type real time combat RPG. Usually the story is not as intricate or involved and characters are not heavily developed. Also, real time combat limits the kind of special effects and size of enemies you can interact with. In a turn based RPG the special effects can be far more impressive and the enemies more grand because the actions are scripted better.

Actually, Oblivion is a more true RPG than Final Fantasy. RPG stands for role playing game as you know and the basic definition of the genre is to allow a player to develop a character however they want and have freedom to do whatever they want in the game. Oblivion gives you a choice in just about everything you do but most so called RPG's give you very limited char development and keep you restricted to a narrow path through a scripted story.

[QUOTE="CaptainCrazy"] Actually, Oblivion is a more true RPG than Final Fantasy. I was waiting on someone to say this. Oblivion is definitely more of an RPG than any FF game in existence. I'm not saying it's better, but it's more of an RPG. You play the role of your character. JRPGs makes you play as characters in the game, but you still don't actually do any real shaping of him/her other than stats (and even stat customization is limited). As far as Final Fantasy going against being turn-based, a game doesn't become an RPG once it has a turn-based battle system. I also think people should be careful with their requests for more active battle engines. The ONLY good battle system in a JRPG I've ever seen that wasn't turn based is the one in FFXII. All the Star Oceans, Suikodens, or whatever other series have active, non-turn based systems are inferior to the gambits in XII.

It hasn't changed my mind, except that it has brought me into the world of RPGs that I have avoided specifically because of turn-based rpgs like FF.  I have always hated the idea of taking turns to attack and have disliked the cliches stories. Okami and action rpgs like X-men legends have gotten me into the world of rpgs that allow me to love oblivion.  All oblivion has done for me is give me any even dimmer view of turn based and jrpgs, while getting me to love the world of wrpgs.

I've "unofficially" been done with FF since FF IX.

I watched my wife play through X and X-2, currently watching her play through FF XII. (I started with FF 1 and she started with VII)

Until Square-Enix proves that they can produce a game that isn't lack-luster then I'll stick to other games.

It has nothing to do with Oblivion, because I've played the Elder Scrolls series without comparing the two. They're really different gameplay wise. It's like comparing NFS and GT or Forza. Both are racing games, but one's arcadey and the others are sims.

Oblivion is an engrossing Role-Playing GAME. FF has an engrossing STORY with J-RPG hair.

Oblivion is a great game

BUT .... if all the RPG all play like Oblivion .... that would be pretty boring, right?

so~ Final Fantasy still keeps its seat :)

I haven't played Oblivion yet, although I plan on it despite falling asleep while playing Morrowind.

That said, I enjoy the final fantasy series because

-you get to play using a party of different characters

-the game is not in first-person viewpoint

-I could list more reasons but I'm too lazy
