Anyone else feel the same way?

Remember back to PS1. The starting point for many of the series and characters we know today. Metal Gear Solid, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon. Tomb Raider etc.

PS1 had such a wide selection of games to choose from and they were all so cheap too. PS1 was revolutionary with its 3D graphics

PS2 built on that and brought us many industry changing sequels pushing the boundaries of entertainment. Exclusivity wasn't a massive factor back then either. Not like it is today. Towards the end of it's lifecycle it ushered in online play for a select few games as a testing ground for the future. It was much more simple back then, everyone had a PS2, everyone had San Andreas and Vice City. And it always gave every gamer someothing to talk about. These days there is a divide between PS3 and 360 owners because of different exclusives on the platforms. It also had a DVD player which was fantastic at the time.

PS3 although it had a few defining titles rising up out of nowhere such as Uncharted 2 and MGS4 the PS3 will probably only be remembered for Call Of Duty and that is a shame. Another thing the PS3 will be remembered for is the countless delays and disappointments. Alot of which coming from games such as Gran Turismo. PS3 wasnt all bad though. Blu-Ray, a constantly updating Playstation Network and now 3D and motion control. But lets be honest, most of these are a gimmick. The only thing that matters are the games on offer and we weren't offered enough diversity and amount to choose from. This was pretty much the age of the FPS and not much else has been allowed to flourish because of it.

Lets hope PS4 can deliver. And let's also hope that it doesn't get hyped up way too much like the PS3.

Let me please state that this is "my opinion". Thanks for reading

Hehe  you mad.

No seriously... i don't see anything wrong with this current generation, or with the PlayStation 3 for that matter. (i couldn't be happier)

Seems to me as if you want to go backwards... rather then forwards. Everything has been improved in quality with this gen so i don't see the problem here?

Now that you mention it. I think I probably do want to go backwards. I haven't really experienced anything as exciting and fresh as the games I found on PS2. MGS2, MGS3, Bully, Resi 4. I think I'm gonna just hold off on PS3 for now and kick back with the classics. I recently played Sonic 2 on the Sega Megadrive and forgot how simple a game can be and still be brilliant.

Those game were definitely revolutionary and memorable. But the PS3 has some gems too, you just need to know where to look. Anyways enjoy gaming bro :D

Here's an idea don't play COD if it bothers you that much. PS3 has plenty of great titles, you just have to look at the right places. And seeing as how this gen will be far longer than previous gens we can expect a lot more awesome games, heck next year PS3 has the most EPIC line-up of any PS console.

So, I hear where you're coming from.

But i have to diagree.

You're right, the PS1 had some amazing titles and brought alot of good games to the real mainstream (Metal Gear for one, which as a series is far older than the PS1)

The PS2 built on the PS1's fanbase and brought us some very cool games(Sly Cooper and god Of War, I'm Looking at you). Exclusivity was a factor, but the PS2's biggest competitor at the time was probably the dreamcast. A far superior machine that was only not continued because of the downfall of SEGA.

the PS3 has had it's issues. But it has brought us some spectacular games. Infamous, Killzone 2, Demon's Souls, Uncharted and the (IMHO) Revelutionary MAG

The machine has had a few teething problems, sure, but i think it has evened itself out a little.

I think te playstation brand it improving generation to generation.

..

As for the call of duty thing, i think you are looking at it wrong.

The issue is with the gamers being addicted to a rehashed, annualised, piece of crap game. Not the machine you are playing it on. Would you say that PC gaming is only going to be remembered for Call of Duty?

PS3 still has quite a few years to go, so i wouldn't call it the worst just yet. but so far, yea, your sentiment is somewhat warranted. PS saw the birth of some of the greatest franchises on 5th gen, and Sony was able to capitalise on that success and created in the 6th gen what is doubtlessly the most dominant console in history, whose library is easily the biggest and arguably the best ever. it was Sony's Golden Age, no less. PS3 obviously has VERY huge shoes to fill and it's only natural that fans will sometimes feel disappointed. hopefully it will gain momentum as the generation progresses. but make no mistake - Sony's Golden Age is behind us now....

Instead of just pointing the finger, how about looking at yourself for a moment and contemplate. I kinda share your viewpoint, but at the same time I grew up with PS1 and bought a PS2 after many years not gaming, They hold nostalgic value to me, and the PS3 for my part is a kind of "been there, done that" thing. But that's not Sony's fault, it's just me that got used to it and I'm not that easily woved anymore. Plus, the PS3 is not dead and have many years left. Remember that there were a lot of great games coming to the PS1 and PS2 at the end of their lifespan when developers finally managed to utilize the system to the fullest.

And although you're feeling nostalgic about earlier console versions, ask someone who started gaming with a PS3 in ten years time. They might disagree with you.

i think what is somewhat disappointing is the fact that Playstation lost its JRPG king status to Nintendo's Wii and DS in this generation. it's a natural result considering the market share of Nintendo, but it galls me all the same. :?

I do kind of agree with you but I think Sony has put 10 times the effort into it's exclusive titles than, for example, microsoft had has produced some nifty games in my opinion, also I feel it's continued it's franchises rather well (god of war, ratchet and clank, and obviously MGS)

I hear where you are coming from as far as the leap that PS1 made for gaming but in my honest opinion I was a N64 fan. I didn't play any great Sony titles until PS2. To me PS2 was the best console of all time due to the amount of great games at those great prices they had at the time. Why do you think Xbox made the 360 so quick(Besides Pirating as well).

Now to talk about this Gen of PS3. I believe the game variety is just a tad behind PS2 but it is still a great line up. Games like Uncharted, God of War, Metal Gear, Little Big Planet, Gran Tursimo 5, Killzone, Several great Multiplats, and (I agree with person above) MAG revolutionary. The problem that I see here is that I think reviews and sites like gamespot has ruined it for gamers just a little. The reason being is that when you went to buy a game it was based on your opinion and the opinion of friends that had similar tastes in games as you. Therefore when you found a game that you really liked and shared it with someone that person did not come in with idea about the game already because they read a review of the game.

I am not saying that reviews are all bad, but it has made some gamers lose that surprise factor they once had when they found a hidden gem.

ANIALATOR136

Wait, didn't the PS3 do exactly that?!? Push the boundaries of entertainment with its unparraleled exclusives which I find you omit a whole lot of (GOW,Heavy Rain, LBP, MAG, Resistance1&2)...

and I don't understand when you say "It was much more simple back then, everyone had a PS2, everyone had San Andreas and Vice City" ok so now everyone has COD, whats the point? you contradict yourself.

And ok, Ps2 had a DVD player which was fantastic at the time, now PS3 has a blu ray player which is fantastic and much better than DVD... so i dont get it.

And your upset that you had to wait 4 years for GT5, ok, but its one game. And that was the only exclusive game with drastic delays..

It's the age of FPS only beacause we as consumers buy FPS's as if its never going to come back, the industry supply what consumers demand and the large majority (excluding myself) demand FPS.

I think your just feeling a little nostalgic, the PS2 was a great system, but the PS3 is just as great if not better..

I love this generation. Sony has brought us HD gaming, 3D, motion gaming, free online psn, playstation store, netflix, etc. We have had great games such as the Uncharted series, Heavy Rain, inFAMOUS, MGS4, Demon's Souls, AC2, Batman AA, MLB series, R&C, Valykyria Chronicles, GOW 3, Castlevania, FFXIII, etc. I could go on and on with the content we have this generation. I am loving it. PS3 is my favorite console ever...period.

I couldn't disagree more strongly TC. Never before has it been a better time to be a gamer!

I think you are locked in on a few games and have damned the PS3 for their faults, but if you were such a fan of the old...why are you playing the new?

I'll tell you why: its because graphics have never been so real, sounds have never been sharper, multiplayer has never been so plentiful (on a console) and its only getting better.

The media is now starting to see the gaming industry is the powerhouse it is, and being a gamer has never been so accepted in society as it is today.

Take what you will, but don't forget that PS1 and PS2 had their delays and definatley had their bombs just like the PS3 and ever other console. You don't remember this because you chose to remember the good titles...so why are you not doing this now?

What you remember the PS3 as, will be up to you.

Just to touch on "remembering the simple days" I think you are forgetting some things.

You forget about the war with the NES, Sega, Game Cube, Nintendo 64, Jaguar, PC etc. that were just as prevelant as it is today.

How about the exclusive content like the blood in Mortal Combat that was in the SEGA version but not on the SNES?

How about the Twisted Metal, Ridge Racer and Tekken delays?

How about having to blow in your cartridge, using acotton swab withcleaning solutionor finding that home remedy to remove scratches off your disk?

Gaming back then wasn't any simpler than it is today, but if you choose to remember the good times from back then as you would the PS3 days now, the PS3 will have delivered just as much as its predecessors.

strongly disagree with the TS, consoles have evolved bigtime and so have the games and the variety is still there, the main thing i love about consoles now is that fact that i can play games online and dont have to worry about 4-5 other peeps stankin up my couch because we have to play in split screen and only have 4 controller ports, i dont miss those days at all

My only complaint would be the severe lack of RPG titles. PS1 and PS2 had FF7-12, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Star Ocean, Persona, SMT, Suikoden, Xenosaga and others. I like both Western and Japanese RPG, but this gen has really disappointed when it comes to JRPG. Star Ocean 4 was a disappointment, Eternal Sonata was average, FFXIII is a love/hate type of game and I'm more towards the hate.

At this point I rate PS2 > PS3 > PS1. Back in the PS1 days I couldn't afford any game like I can now and they weren't as easy to acquire with no internet. Doesn't matter though, point is I'm enjoying PS3 more than PS1. And of course there's online gameplay and downloadable games/DLC. The way Sony's 1st/2nd party are cranking out games to partner all the great upcoming multiplats there's no reason at all it can't top the PS2 later on. Nostalgia can go suck a lemon.

The PS3.

It only does everything, except play PS2 games.

It plays blu-ray, has amazing exclusives like Uncharted 2 and LittleBigPlanet, hardly ever breaks down, is the graphics power-house of this generation, etc.....

You're right, what a terrible gen for PlayStation.

My ranks of the best generation gaming systems that I had.

PS2 > Genesis > NES > PS1 > PC

I'm gonna have to wait a little longer before I decide where PS3 ranks but I don't think any system will beat the PS2 generation when it comes to greatest collection of games. Even though the PS3 has better graphics and audio, the PS2 had the best collection of great games but it was also out longer and I am also getting older so I think that changes things as well.

Most of the franchises you listed are availible on PS3 in their current-gen forms. (also, you can buy their original incarnations on the PSN).

20 years down the road if you ask me what games I liked for PS3 most, first things that will pop in my head are MGS4, Uncharted series mainly the great exclusives. CoD is big now but just like it took over MoH something will take it's place as well.

I disagree although your points are all well made and rational. I just think the culture of gamers has changed (along with societal shifts). I think the only thing that makes this generation of gaming appear underwhelming is people's culture of entitlement and disillusionment caused by the whole corporate slant to gaming. During previous gens it seemed no one cared what system/game they were playing so long as they were enjoying themselves. I blame system wars and the corporate greed of the industry for tarnishing what was once a wholly enjoyable means of passing time.

For Playstation? How about -In General-

There's way too much abuse, greed and politics. I mean come on, we're expected to pay $60/$70 for half a game. (to point out one factor)

Much bigger fish to fry I say...

Can't lie, TC is right.

PS3 is a far cry from what PS2 and PS1 was. It's not a horrible machine, Sony's overconfidence really screwed it up the first 2-3 years.

I'm not sure I'd call Uncharted 2 and MGS4 "rising up out of nowhere". There was a ton of hype behind them and they're widely regarded as some of the best titles on any platform and even some of the best titles ever made. Also calling blu ray and the PSN "gimmicks" seems really off. Blu ray is what allows for some of the crazy things we've seen in PS3 exclusives (along with the Cell processor, of course) and PSN is a free service competing with XBL, no gimmick at all.

Nothing besides FPS has been allowed to flourish? Okay, so I guess we'll just forget about Bayonetta, Valkyria Chronicles, BioShock, Uncharted, Assassins Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Burnout Paradise, inFamous, Fallout 3, Little Big Planet, Portal............

It might be your opinion, but you back it up pretty poorly.

Although well made points TC, I do disagree.

What original PlayStation gave all of us in gaming community was the beginning of something great that we even see today with established franchises. PS2 expanded those titles while bringing in new IP's that continued the success.

One thing you have to notice however is the media, technology, gaming journalism had changed.

Gaming in general had become mainstream, when that happens with any product - quality, uniqueness, imagination amongst other aspects simply never reach the greatness of the original product for various reasons, money, politics etc.

PlayStation 3 overall continues the trend of PS1, PS2 in a good way. The first year was probably the hard lessons learned. Recession, global economy meltdown didn't help of course. When family lose jobs to support themselves, gaming isn't really on many people's minds.

3D, Blu-ray, great selection of old and new exclusive IP's, multimedia, reliable console are couple of reasons why I see PlayStation 3 as worthy successor.

No console is perfect, but you have to give due where it deserves.

PS3 is just starting to kick off, 2011 line up alone not counting multiplatform titles is extremely good.

Worst PlayStation generation? Don't believe so. Slow start - yes. That had been changing since 2008, it just too bad that media propaganda sometimes steps in.

sony should have included more ram in the ps3 and probably include free 2xAA like the 360

they kind of shot themselves in the foot not doing so but other then that the ps3 couldnt have been better hardware wise

There's nothing wrong with this generation, imo. The defining titles aren't few either: MGS4, Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, LBP(user-generated content), MAG(256 players), Heavy Rain(storytelling), God of War III(Scale and ambition), Gran Turismo(Amount of content), Flower, and many more will make ps3 stand out among other consoles. I don't think ps3 will be remembered for Call of Duty alone, no console has ever been remembered for only one game. Time will tell if 3D and Move will indeed be revolutionary, but the potential is there, the same can be said for PS Home.

And don't forget, ps3 will have a ten-year lifespan, and developers have already started harnessing its true potential, so the future is bright for ps3. Games such as LBP 2, Twisted Metal, Last Guardian and Killzone 3 have great potential to be one of the best games out there, and I'm sure there is much more to come.

I dont see anything wrong with this gen playstation and your wanting a PS4 for better games? Look to the publishers they need to make better games, the PS4 will not bring better games, thats the game publishers job and they still can make better games for the PS3. Although I have no problem with the games that are comming out now.

No. This gen has some awesome titles. Demon's Souls. Red Dead Redemption. MGS4. Fallout 3 and NV, Oblivion, Gran Turismo 5, BFBC2, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2. Heavy Rain. GoW3. and a ton of games I personally didn't enjoy like LBP, Modnation Racers, Infamous, BAA, FF13, etc. Nothing wrong with this gen. The best games from the PS1 and the PS2 era were spread out over 5-6 years and the best titles came out inthe last few years of the console's existences.

Now that you mention it. I think I probably do want to go backwards. I haven't really experienced anything as exciting and fresh as the games I found on PS2. MGS2, MGS3, Bully, Resi 4. I think I'm gonna just hold off on PS3 for now and kick back with the ****cs. I recently played Sonic 2 on the Sega Megadrive and forgot how simple a game can be and still be brilliant.

Do you not have one or simply don't play the one you have?

Oh, Heavy Rain is simple and brilliant. So is Flower.

I disagree completely. I despised Sony, the Playstation IMO was inferior to the N64, the Playstation 2 had inferior hardware compared to the Xbox and was only successful with 3rd parties because of the massive influence Sony had built up with the PS1 (100+ million sold). It wasn't until the PS3 that Sony (for me) had the best hardware, 1st party studios, something that separated itself from the competition (blu-ray), free internet, non-proprietary hard drive and battery-less controllers. I felt compelled to get a PS3 because of the price drop (2008) and MGS4, for the first time ever I owned a Playstation system that wasn't the PSP and I am very happy with it and it seems people are being a lot more negative towards Sony this gen for all the wrong reasons and thats disheartening seeing as how without them gaming in the HD era may have fallen under the constraints of pay-to-play online, and single DVDs.
