Really, I don't see many games utilizing the awesomeness of Blu-Ray as of right now. It seems like Sony jumped the gun on Blu Ray and delivered it a generation early. I can see systems using Blu-Ray or something like it in the future but... Did they really need it now?

Um... Have you ever watched a Blu-Ray movie?..Its amazing, the sound and picture. Every PS3 game is on a BRD (Blu-Ray Disk), all that means it has better visuals, sound, and can fit more on a disk.

Blu-ray is definitely needed for HD movies. I'm not so sure about games though. I have a 360 and PS3. I'm not seeing any real Blu-ray benefit in the PS3 games I've played. Granted, if Blue Dragon was on PS3, it wouldn't need to be on 3 discs.

If you have more room on a disc, that just means you need that much more content to fill it. I have read recently that Devil May Cry 4 looks slightly better on PS3 because textures aren't compressed as much. Only problem with that is the BD drive in the PS3 can't read data as fast as the drive in the 360. I'm pretty sure DMC4 has an option to install the game on the hard drive. So, that takes care of that. Of course, then you have to deal with the install and the hopes that you don't install so many games that the drive fills.

Anyway...Blu-ray is nice, but I personally don't think it was necessary this generation.

Why does there have to be a timeline on superior technology?

no i don't think so because if the rumors that are true Warner is going exclusivly Blu the hd-dvd vs blu-ray war will be virtualy over and the ps3 will sell to millions that would buy a xbox 360 or wii just because of the blu-ray player. Also we will be seeing more and more games that use the extra space blu-ray uses. It was worth the extra $150 to $200.

In my eyes Blu-Ray is a HUGE advantage over the competition. 50gb on a BD compared to 8.5gb on DVD9 is a LOT of space. This will come in handy with free roam games, because you won't have to swap out discs when you load a certain area, which is just convienent.

yes, there is a HUGE advantage, but I don't see the advantage being put to use right now. besides to use all that space means making stuff to fill it, that would take a long time to make a free roam game that big.

I think its the perfect time for bluray. We needed something new. But as of right now the only games you will see utilize the bd is games from sony. Third party games will never use the full potential of bluray since 360 and wii still use old formats. I mean GTA4 could be even better and bigger and more detailed then they are making it but since it needs to be ported to 360 they need to make sure it can fit on a dvd9 without having to make the game all over again, which makes ppl say whats the point of all that space when it will never be fully utilzed by 3rd party.

PS3 is only a little more than a year old. Give it some time man. I Pods came out 6 or so years ago but it's really only now that most people have one even if they didn't buy it themselves. It took them time to streamline the product and look at it now. My 30 Gig from two years ago is now considered big in size. Have you looked at an 80 Gig lately? It's freakin thin!

Yes it's needed. DVD would not be sufficient even for many of the games now...

And that's when we all upgrade our PS3s to 1 terabyte HDD :)

A couple weeks ago there was thread with a link saying DMC4 did look better on the PS3, and that it did have an option to install it on the HD. The installation is for the PS3 version, and is suppose to make it to where the game has no load times and runs and plays smoother.

On topic, I think BluRay was a very wise decision, because not only does it give developers a chance to be more creative with games because they have more space, but it is also helping to force people to move on from dvd. New technology is always great, and videogame systems are a great way of pushing it on the general public and moving things foward hence dvd with the PS2. Nowadays you got to have an HDTV and everything that goes with that if you want to be on point.

Sony claims 10 year consoles. Let's look at their track record. PS1 sold for 11 years. PS2 is on about 8, and still selling very strong. So yeah, even though they overlap generations, it looks like Sony's consoles do have around a 10 year life-span.

As for the comment earlier about load times, that's why many PS3 games install part of the game to the hard disk, which is an option since the hard disk is a standard feature on every model of the PS3. If you get a smaller HDD and worry about running out, you can delete the install data on games you aren't playing and reinstall it if you decide to play it again. Or, you can upgrade to a larger hard drive. Any 2.5 sata drive will work, so you don't have to worry about buying a specific (overpriced) proprietary drive.

End result is plenty of room for uncompressed textures, uncompressed audio, multiple language tracks (yes some of us would prefer to play our games in something other than English, without having to import) and potentially bigger games. The space is there, for whatever the devs want to use it for.

QFT...the PCM 7.1 soundtracks on the games are incredible if you have a system that can handle them

Lots of HD movies are using dual layer BD-50GB disks. Pirates and other show off just how good a blu-ray movie can look.

As someone who uses the Oblivion high res textures "Make it pretty" mod on his pc, I WANT UNCOMPRESSED TEXTURES. Giant, non blocky textures that still look hot even when you are right up on em. Full uncompressed pcm without any hiss or noise down to a spent round hitting the pavement or grass in glorious 7.1 suround sound. And I want it all to fit on 1 shiny scratch resistant disc. So no, no its not too early. Sony's already won, we're just waiting for MS to bite the bullet and release a console with a high capacity drive standard. That will be the final clinching proof that crazy Ken was right.
