It looks like my parents might give me their older HD projection TV and I was wondering how compatible this would be with the ps3.

Its a sony KDP-51ws550 that only does 1080i. Does this mean the ps3 downgrade everything to 720P? Also, I don't really know what HDMI cables are everyone talks abou using to hook up a ps3, but I can tell you the tv has 3 labeled HD inputs. Two just say HD/DVD In and have 3 plugs for video (Y, Pb, Pr) and the other input looks more like a computer scsci plug. Please let me know if the ps3 would work on this tv and how much its capabilities would be diminished. Thanks

So your TV doesn't have HDMI ports?

The connector looks like a wide USB? If not you will have to run through a component cable.

If it's for needle like pins, that's VGA port, which means you need to get a external converter box to convert signal from your PS3 to TV. If the pins are flat then you have DVI port, which just requires a HDMI-DVI adaptor.

You can watch movies and PS2 games and XMB screen at 1080i. PS3 games would actually get 720p treatment, which most people think is better anyways.

Go to www.monoprice.com for HDMI-DVI cable, it cost way too much at major retailers.

There was an article done on this somewhere, the component cable actually degrades PQ because the video signal needs to be converted to analog signal by PS3 and then revert back to digital by your TV. The quality degrading due to two conversion for some people is actually quite visible.

So then S-Video is better? I know its not HD.

S-video is like component video, except the wires are thinner and next to each other, thus creating more interference. It's a step up from single video line, but definitely not as good as composite.

Umm you do realize that 720p is a better resolution than 1080i right!!! Your old Projection 1080i HDTV will actually downscale to a barely HD 480p!!!! The "computer plug" you are referring to is most likely a DVI input. YOu will need to buy a DVI/HDMI cable to get the most out of your TV!!
