I turn my ps3 on to play some MW2 and the screen froze, then i see that yellow light........crap, this sucks so bad cuz christmas is literally 22 days away. Idk what the heck ima do. repairs cost $129. Im skeptical about it because my disk is still in there. is there any place that i can find a slim for cheap? maybe for $200? I kinda always wanted a slim anyways

Sorry to hear that man, it must really suck.

But you have three options to choose from when this happens:

Go on Youtube and follow some very accurate step-by-step walkthroughs on how to fix your PS3. (these are only a temporary fix tho)

Send it in to Sony and get it fixed

Or.. (possibly the wisest thing to do) go out and buy a new Slim.

If it's a 20gb or a 60gb console you can send it it in and Sony will replace it with a Slim for a fee. I just found out my 80gb is not eligible for that :x. It's B/C and everything too

Getting the Slim at this point would be the best alternative, rather then sending it to Sony who would just send you back a refurbished system. Did you back up your game saves prior to that?

Is this true? I have one of the original 20GB PS3's that went YLOD earlier this year and I haven't done anything with it. I was going to just break down and get a slim eventually but I'll send it to Sony if they'll send me one for free.

20 gig and 60 gig PS3 YLOD is Really easy to fix yourself, fixed two of my 60 gig models, for roughly 40 dollars (had to replace my heat gun that burnt up). there are step by step instructions to do it if you have a 60gig with no warranty and are good with taking things apart and putting them back together, just search ps3 ylod fix.

sorta funny cause once my system broke i went out and got one of the 160 gig slims to replace it, the fixing just took place about a week ago, so i couldnt wait to fix them, had to get a new one.

I just went through the first part of the return process on Sony's site and it says my 20GB is out of warranty and will cost $129 to fix. Still cheaper than a slim but from what I have read, they will break again after repair.

I think I'll go ahead and get a slim and try a self repair to use in another room. I'll pay the $129 if it means they'll send me a slim but it doesn't say that anywhere on the support page.

yes its true however the slim is not brand new it is a refurbished one. Second you have to have the original HDD that came with your system if you have upgraded to a bigger one, and it will cost about 119 compared to the normal like 149. Mine got the blinking red light and as stated i could not locate my original HDD so i cannot do this option

That happened to me a couple weeks ago too actually. It was an 80 gig. Now we need a new PS3 and PS2 since the new ones aren't backwards compatible...

I'm on the same boat, my original 60GB got the YLOD February of 2009, sent to Sony and they gave me a refurbished 60GB one, even though it seems that my system is running normal, it just take a game to freeze and restart the PS3 to get the YLOD.

I was looking closely for a good deal on Black Friday, but none of those deals were for me, they were good for first time PS3 owners, not for me that had all those games already. Instead of choosing the games for us, they should give the option to choose the games, like if they gonna give us two free games with the system, let us choose the 2 games from a list of 6-8 games. Let's hope by Christmas time I can find a bundle with games that I don't have and games that I want.

Sorry to hear that man. My 60GB died on me last month and I had to buy a 160GB slim. I know how ya feel. What sucks is that all of my game saves were lost before I could get them back. At least I haven't heard anything bad about the slims since they don't YLOD.

Mini just YLODed now while loading a sequence in AC:B :/ Third time a PS3 failed on my (first drive - Sony fixed it, second drive again - Sony replaced PS3) and now YLOD :S Anyone knows a fix or at least a possibility to transfer the data? I guess my backup won't work on another PS3? And I guess data exchange between two PS3s with Ethernet wouldn't work since it's YLODed? :S damn xD

I'd try fixing it yourself via youtube as people have already said. It's actually really easy, I'm incompetent at anything practical (cant change a lightbulb) and even I could fix my old 60GB

As an alternative, you could search Ebay and find someone that does reflows for about $75, then hope you get a new one for Christmas since a console that fails will probably fail again. Don't forget to deactivate your account(s), I lost several when my 60 gig bricked.
