I have played a lot of games in my time and there are some things about games that has always annoyed me, the story.

There are some things about this I must specify;

In most games, for me, the story is completely uforståelig(incomprehensible). This comes to most Japanese games like the Final Fantasys, Ico, The Shadow of the Colossus, MGS etc. I chose to be a little humble about this and say that I am probaly to shallow to understand them, but I think there are a lot of places that there is little logic in what happens.

Furthermore; the way the story is told can be another issue. Half Life, both the first and the second, should have an exciting story, but the way it is told, through what the other caraters say to me(Freeman) just do that I misses out on the story.

One other thing that bothers me is that i cannot think of a single game with a satisfying bossfight that concludes the game with a bang. The endings always feels like anticlimax.

So; my point(finally) is that Uncharted does all of these issues right(again, for me)except the boss fight thing. But that is the only game that has a really good movie feeling about it. I hope this is the start on a new gaming trend. I am soon to begin my third playthroug, but I will wait for the rumble axis for this one. Great game.

What´s your opinion?(Please do not only punch me under my belt by calling me stupid etc.)

Yea I found the story very good and I found the twists in the game really crazy. The last boss fight was alright not too bad and not too good.

Hey, a fellow Dane! :D

And yeah, I totally agree about Heavenly Sword. The whole thing is a story telling orgasm. The story isn't great though, it's just told very well!

Good point, but I do not think it compares to Uncharted. It is not exciting in the same way. It is, however, a game with a story that is more accessible than most other games. Maybe I should try it again, but Bohan is a major pain

Man, what's not to get from SotC?? I can understand how someone doesn't get MGSs story at first or even after a couple of times because it's all tangled up, and that FFs stories are just too long and sometimes you can even forget WTF happened at some points... but SotC???

It has one of the simplest story from the last gen gaming and as simple as it is, it turned out being precise enough to make it appealing to everybody.

While I understand what you are saying and agree with you to some degree, I have to say, Uncharted is more of a straight summer popcorn movie that we all would take our kids to see.

But other games like FF is like a long winded fantasy book that if you don't sit down there and play it quietly with concentration, you aren't going to get the story.

And half life type of story telling is really not my cup of tea either. I understand what it is, but when all the stories are told by someone telling me (freeman) and through documents or whatnot, it lose the emotional impact. So I play half life because it's a fun game to play, not because its story is intriguing or anything.

Hyperbole much?

Uncharted has a good story, but saying its the only game with a decent story is sort of an insult to the medium. Just because you don't unstand a particular games story doesn't mean it doesn't have a good story (and I bet you ask a lot of questions during movies don't you :P?). In fact some of the best gaming stories are the more complicated ones or the ones that you need to play more than once to fully understand it. Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill and Indigo Prophecy are great examples of this.

OleAndreasBull

Well SotC is considered a prequel for Ico, and if you've played (or even just seen) Ico, you should know that there's a horny boy (:P) hanging around with a girl (no wonder uh?? :P)

Why he was turned into a baby, I can agree that there's no real explanation about this, but the ultimate price?? C'mon!! what would you expect to happen if you freed some ancient demon?? Not a reward and that's for sure.

So to me, Wander had to pay a high price for getting played by that demon, but I guess the creators felt that killing him was just too much and that a lot of gamers would've gotten pissed by that, so they just turned him into a baby.

I agree with you on this one. The problem with the FF series(I know I´m being to general, but you get my point) is both the lenght and some logic.

I did not know these games had anything to do with each other regarding the story. But if they have; does any of the games make more sense? Why did the girl survive after all in Ico?

If Uncharted is the only game you can think of that you believe has a good story I can only suggest you play more games. I've been playing games on computer since the text adventure days and have played many games with amazing stories. From Colossal Cave through to Oblivion. Also the fact that you feel you have to reply to every post to prove your point is a little pretentious don't you think?

Sometimes, there are minor loophole in long stories like those presented in FF series, but the loop holes are no bigger than any others in other long stories. The major problem is the length of the game, which is not for everyone. It takes some people months before they complete the first playthrough, which effectively make them forgot what the story is about.

But I still have to say, if you can sit through and play through the game, the stroy will sink in and stay with you. When that happens, it's awesome. That's why FF has more fan fictions than any other series in the world I believe.

In my opinion I think Uncharted is one of the only games(that I have played)that has a decent story AND does a good job telling it. Of course there are many games that I have not tried, but believe me when I say I have played my fair share of them.

I reply to many of the posts because I thought that was one of points beeing on a forum discussing PS3/game related topics. I am not saying that I am right in anything, but it is my opinion. My impression is that many game makers try to make their games like interactive movies, but cannot do it. Have you ever been touched by the story in a game the same way a movie does?(Many would mention Aeris´death here, and I get the point, but still...)

What I can not understand is the fact that both the story in games and the way they are told is not better when we now have some really powerful consoles.

We just got them. Devs are still trying to figure things out. Take a look at Heavy Rain and see what's coming in the near future.

Resident Evil,Devil May Cry and God of War series are some more good examples of good stories told. But if i really wanted to get into this, there are a list of titles i could start naming with good stories. Also like someone else said, easy to comprehend, doesnt make the story better. The complicated stories are the best imo.

What I can not understand is the fact that both the story in games and the way they are told is not better when we now have some really powerful consoles.

You are correct in many ways here. But realize that the ability of story telling has little to do with technology. It's true that we can't make a star war movie without some technology to render space, but as you can see, the new technology used in Episode 1, 2, 3 didn't make star wars 1,2,3 better.

The point is, story telling is an art to itself. If a game can do story telling and do it well, it's a HUGE welcome, but sadly many games do fall short on that. And it's sadder that we gamers simply accept it as default. That's also one of the biggest reason why many main stream media critics reject games as a serious arts form.

But, there are hopes. There are games, not limited to Uncharted (and this is the point that I disagree with you), that can tell great stories.

Indigo Prophecy, tells an interactive story better than almost all si-fi movies that came out in the past couple of years.

Many games in the Final Fantasy sieries does the same thing.

OH, let's not forget the excellent the Longest Journey and its sequal Dream Fall. If you haven't played them on PC, do it.

But over all, games are about "let's do quest 1, 2, 3, and kill the bad guys 1, 2, 3." Ok. some games are even worse, they are more like "let's kill anything that moves".

I admit I totally forgot about that game. To me that game even tops Uncharted in storytelling. Fantastic story and even more fantastic way of telling it. The first time I ever saw the 2D way of telling a story. Really original and superb. Sorry about that folks.

TC, what you are being attracted to with Uncharted is the "Popcorn Flick" style of Uncharted. It's similar to most blockbuster movie releases where the story is pretty straightforward, easy to understand, but still interesting and entertaining.

It pays a lot of homage to the Indiana Jones movies in MANY ways. Even the style of humor is in the same vein.

I loved Uncharted's story. I blitzed through it over the weekend.

Agreed, I was pleasantly surprised with the story in that one. Also, download the anime episodes for it on PSN, they are very well produced and really add to the story.

Sorry, not a fan of the God of War story, only thing I liked about second one was the return of Titans. That was cool. But otherwise that story can be summed up in: Kratos must get revenge on {Insert God's name here}. Not a whole lot to it...

I play games for the gameplay. The main draw of movies, books, television, etc is story. The main draw of games is interesting game play and design NOT story. Just look at classic games like pacman, tetris, othello, chess, etc. They have next to no story yet can be appreciated over time. Sure, story can add alot to a game, especially in adventure and roleplaying games. But the thing that keeps you playing the game is gameplay and design.
