Read this a little while ago. If this is true, you can count the hi-def format war officially won by Blu-Ray. Universal is the only studio that is HD-DVD exclusive at the moment.

Althought I find these posts to be anything more then "disruptive" (It's a PS3 forum, not a HD-DVD vs Blu Ray forum), I applaud it if Universal goes Blu Ray ( And here is hoping they will release a Blu Ray version of Jurassic Park)
A German website said that Pioneer, said, that Universal said they were going nuetral.................................m3Boarder32
That's what the article said. It also said:
It is important to note that this announcement has not yet been confirmed by Universal. Article
i want my blu ray JAWS !!!. they only reason universal is with HD DVD right now is casue the HD DVD camp is paying universal huge amounts of money to stay with them. I wonder if HD DVD just cant afford it anymore.
This and the rumor announcment of STAR WARS blu ray will end HD DVD.

Yeah, cuz FUD ends format wars..
YES JURASSIC PARK IN BLU RAYl-town4l
This move would put all the Jurassic Park movies, LOTR movies, Harry Potter movies, James Bond movies, Matrix movies, and Star Wars movies on the same format.
why are you guys talking about blue-ray and HD-DVD did anything happne today or yrsterday with them?alberto2045
I am guessing you didn't read the link that was posted? To sum it up, the rumor is that Universal, the sole exclusive backer to HD-DVD will be going neutral...meaning that they will also support Blu-ray.

Really now i had no clue all those movies belonged to universal. so that pretty much confirms it, when universal comes to blu ray the war is over.

alberto you also could have gotten that just from the topic title which you didn't care to read apparently

all of those do not belong to Universal. a couple of them do. the fact is, alot of the movie industry backs blu-ray exclusively. If Universal backs out of HD-DVD, then HD-DVD will have 0 exclusive backers. So they will not get movies from the exclusive blu-ray studios.
I wonder if this will change Wal-Mart's decision to back HD DVD at all?The_Rick_14
That was a rumor. Somebody in China said Wal-Mart was looking into cost benefit analysis on ordering X amount of HD-DVD players. Somebody took that info and ran with it.

Ahh interesting. It really didn't sound like a wise business move to fully back the company with one exclusive against the one with all the others.

i dont get it.
I fail to see the relevance concerning the PS3. Yes i know the PS3 has a BR player but BR winning the format war does nothing for the PS3. You can now purchase a BR player for less than a PS3. Which pretty much means those that were buying the PS3 solely for BR purposes have no reason to buy a PS3 now. This does nothing to help Sony win the console war. In fact I bet Sony cares more about BR than it does the PS3.
Serioulsy if enough players get sold on both formats eventually all the studios will support both.

no it does help the PS3 alot,if you look at amazon sales ranking, it puts the PS3 as the number one best seller for blu-ray. the fact of the matter is that if blu-ray fails. do you think people are going to buy ps3s there after. people will realize that they dont want to stay with a gaming system that includes a dead format. but the PS3 is not in this situation. The PS3 is helping blu-ray win. Once that happens, the system will be then concentrated for gaming and studios cant support both, becuase consumers will then complain, and what happens next is we go to digital distribution and both formats die at the Same time (aka M$ wins, if you know what there doing in XBL)

Scenario 1:
"Daddy, I want this console for Christmas."
"Son, that's $400. Daddy isn't going to plop down $400+ for you to solely play games. Now go away."
Scenario 2:
"Daddy, I want this console for Christmas."
"Son, that's $600. Daddy hates you for making him spend that much money, but it would be nice to watch some BluRays too. Let's go ahead with the purchase."
Perfectly applicable to real life? No.
Is the news definite proof that the system will take off? No.
But this news benefits one system more than the rest. Hint: you're in the forum for it.

BTW my dad did this with my 12 yr old brother under senario 2. see it works!!!!
It would be great to finally have the format war over if this is true.
Mcortijo01
i also hope this is true as it driving everyone insane but more importaly it would mean an increase of ps3 as a blueray player for anyone in doubt or who wanted to want and see
wow that was quick,I thought format wars go on for years?. Im sorry as this is actually the first format war i have experienced.Rockman999That's because it will. This report is unconfirmed. Why is there a format war thread every week, in the SONY Board?
Thank you. The ignorance is amazing. Right now it's pretty much 60/40 on the year in favor of Blu Ray and that's with Blu Ray Dominating the first three months of the year because there was nothing out on HD DVD.just to let you all know blu ray isnt slaughtering HD DVD, the sales are actully fairly close with the favor beign in blu ray.

You're kidding right? You mean to tell me that if the Blu-Ray format wins, it won't be a selling point for getting a PS3 over an XBOX 360? Because I beg to differ. Okay, so you may be able to get a Blu-Ray player for less then a PS3, but can you then get that same Blu-Ray player AND an XBOX 360 for the same price as a PS3? I think not. If Blu-Ray wins, anybody who is on the fence between getting a PS3 and a 360 will have more incentive to get the PS3 knowing that BOTH movies and next-gen games are going to be using this format from now on. And don't you think that by winning the format war, Sony will have more time and cash to invest into the PS3 itself via better games and online features? If Blu-Ray failed, don't you think it would have HELPED the competition? Don't you think that if it won the war, it would then HURT the competition? There is tons of relevance, you just can't see it.

There's a thread like this because SO MANY perspective owners complained that Sony was forcing a format on them. This won't be the case if next gen games all use Blu-Ray in the future. Plus there are many people who say they are waiting until the format war is decided before they invest in a PS3. The sooner Blu-Ray wins (make no mistake, it IS winning), the sooner those on the fence can purchase that PS3. Nobody is mentioning anything about "slaughtering". But you can't deny that the trend is that Blu-ray will win out. No ignorance in seeing that an increase in sales of one format versus a decrease of sales in another format shows that the trend is Blu-Ray is winning the format war. And if the article about Universal turns out to be true, then that can only help Sony and the PS3, hence why this thread is in this forum.

Sony owns MGM, MGM makes the bond movies, Warner makes the Matrix Movies, LOTR is made by Alliance Atlantis, and Star Wars is made by Lucas Films, none of those movies have anything to do with Universal except harry potter, i think.

Blu Ray Players are cheaper now and will do nothing but go down in price. There are a lot of people that bougtht the PS3 because it was a cheaper player that played games, but fast forward to the holiday season of 2008. How much will Blu Ray players be then 300 dollars? less? How much will the 360 be then? 300 dollars? Less? Not to mention if HD DVD completely dies, MS will jump on that bandwagon. And how much will the PS3 be then? I think you see where I'm going. Even still by Blu Ray winning Sony still wins, because of all the royalties that they get from evey disc sold. The sooner Blu-Ray wins (make no mistake, it IS winning), the sooner those on the fence can purchase that PS3. HD DVD would need more studio support and if it had it they would kill Blu Ray. If you think that people aren't saying HD DVD is getting killed then you don't come around these parts that often.

You know, I somehow don't see the massive priceslashing required to make your plan work.
