I'm planning on upgrading since I ran out of space on my original HD. I was planning on getting a 500GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive.

Would that be decent enough, or should I go smaller/bigger. Anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah I been wanting to do the same as-well, as I been running out of space. Seems every game needs to be installed to run efficiently and so many more to come over the years. You should go with 500gb or higher if you especially have media on your PS3 like music and films etc.

That should be fine for a while. I might replace my HDD later with something in the TB range or a SSD drive.

Correct me if im wrong, but i remember reading that a ps3 cannot handle more than 500g's let alone a TB.

I cannot see why it could not handle it...whats the difference? If anyone knows about this, true? untrue? Anyways just my 2c.

1. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_010W433432720001P?vName=Tools&keyword=phillips&prdNo=9&blockNo=9&blockType=G9

Get one of these and notice the #1 in the description. There are different sizes of phillip screwdrivers and the right tool for the job does wonders. Trust me, you'll wonder how in the world people strip the screws.

2. I'm not saying for sure unless I hear it from a Sony employee which calling Customer Service would be your best bet. There are people claiming 1TB drives work in the PS3 and seeing as you can format Fat 32 up to 2TB I would be willing to bet !TB will work fine in the PS3.

3. Make a backup first.

4. Get one of these for the drive you remove, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2781

I think I saw something about the PS3 being able to handle up to about 4 TB with no problem as of now and possibly with firmware updates it could possibly handle even more.

About a year and a half ago I had a 20GB harddrive, I just upgraded to a 320GB harddrive and I must personaly say 320 is plenty.

What the hell are you guys doing to feel that you need 1TB of space?

500GB is good enough for games... but if you're using your PS3 like a media center... get something bigger...

The correct screwdriver being a 1pt or 0pt ;) anything bigger and you're going to strip the buggers.

I have a 500GB 5400RPM seagate on mine. It is planty and loads decent enough you can get better ones if you want faster loading from the HDD.

Highest that i seen is 640GB and up to 7400RPM.If you have the money i would say get a Solid State Drive Everything will load almost an instant from the HDD. They cost alot right now but the speed is worth it.

Okay, I went out and bought a new Hard Drive (500GB, 5400 rpm). It fit's into my PS3 correctly, but when I turn it on, I get a message telling me I need to connect an external device andupdate to version 3.21. Any help on this? No idea what to do.

Well first off you should have backed-up your system data to an external HDD before installing the new internal HDD that way you won't lose any game saves. You could try installing the old HDD again and then backing up the system data but I'm not sure if it will ask you to format the old HDD or not.

Size is up to you but go with a 7200 RPM as they are about the same price but noticably faster.

Also go with Seagate or Western Digital and definitely avoid Hatachi - They are cheap but dont last long at all.

I figured it out :) and also had my game saves backed up except the games who were copyright protected.

I've completely upgraded to a new 500GB. Just sucks that I'll have to re-download all my psn games.
