I Just bought a PS3 and I use a SD TV to play it on, my question is can I watch blue ray movies with my PS3 on a SD TV?

You can, but the entire point of having Blu-ray is so your image can attain the higher resolutions supported by HDTVs.  If you're going to watch shows or movies on an SDTV, you might as well buy DVDs, unless you plan on getting an HDTV in the future.

Doesn't it have more bonus material and support DTS 6.1 and Dolby Digital Plus 7.1? That alone would make me start buying them. I'll be getting a HD sooner than later so it makes sense for me to start up the collection now. I was only concened with it not showing me a picture because I'm not using a HD yet.

You can use SD but to enjoy what blu-ray can offer, HD tv is a must.

Smart move stop wasting moneyu on DVDs start building your BluRay collection, its the safest formet to go you know the PS3 ain't gonna be going away for another 8-10 years so BluRay is the safe buy. Personally I've stopped buying DVDs after I got my PS3, no point in wasting money on a dying format.

This is the reason I don't watch Blu-Ray movies.

Not necessarily true, Eragon is a recent example, next to no special features compared to the less expensive 2-Disc Special Edition DVD.

While the topic creator could buy Blu-ray discs now and get mayble slightly better visuals because of the higher bit-rate, he wouldn't get any audio benefits unless he was using an HDMI-switching receiver which wouldn't be much help with an SDTV. Blu-ray discs are more expensive and DVD will remain the primary release format for two years more at the very least.
