I believe Sony said when the PS3 came out that they designed it to be their system for 12 years.

Why are so many people not even willing to accept this as a question? Do you think it is to soon to bring out the next console and Sony wouldn't do this to there loyal fans. If Sony see a chance to get the jump on MS and bring out the console first to dominate the market then they will take it. They are not going to wait untill they have to play catch up with MS again.
I just read a good but old article about how the Wii and the 360 is affecting the PS3 10 year life span compared to the PS2.

That could be true but the first few word put me off 'i believe Sony'. They have hardly been known to be honest this gen.
Yes, please, by all means save your money and buy a PS4 with a smattering of really terrible "launch quality" software and pass on all the great games that are that are starting to seriously take advantage of the PS3. I mean, that's such a wonderful idea, obviously. This ridiculous obsession with looking past a console not even three years old is something I do NOT understand. If you want new more powerful hardware every three to four years, invest in PC gaming.
The ps4 will not launch untill late 2010 -2011 with really high cost, and the really good games won't come out for it untill 3-5 years after its release.
When the ps4 launches, the ps3 will still have killer games releasing for it that take full potential of it's hardware and will still get surport throughout the first 2-3 years of the ps4's life cycle before it's surport drops to nothing but sports titles and rock band.
screw the slim and buy an 80gig and upgrade it's hard drive. then enjoy it for the next 5 years before upgrading to ps4.
Late 2010 is impossible. This recession is still going on way too strong for new more expensive hardware. It would be dead in the water, and devs wouldn't support it very well at all, as costs they can barely keep up with right now would be impossible to cope with on even more advanced hardware. A new console for Sony before late 2012 if not some time in 2013 would be financial suicide. Their does not exist one single good logical reason for them to plan for a new console in the near future. Not one.

well concidering sony's track record, the fact that the economy is starting to turn around, and the fact that sony stated a couple years ago that the ps4 production would start in 2010.
I would have to say that your wrong.
