So a lot of people I know see the difficulty of this game as a drawback on a game that could have really shined, while other see it as the only reason the game is worth playing. Where do you guys stand? Personally, at first it was a drawback and prevented me from buying the game for a long time, but then I bought it and I think the game would suck if it wasn't so challenging... a lot of the atmosphere and allure of the game would be gone. And hey, the difficulty weeds out the noobs right? After beating the game, I can honestly say the difficulty made it for me.

A little of both. It can be frustrating dying unpredicitbley, yet at the same time, when you beat a boss, you realize that you were good and that's why you won.

pro.

there were times when playing demons souls that i was constantly dieing and i almost thought 'whats the point' but then i would have a moment of clarity and i would work out how to get past a particular part i had been struggling on and would get such a great feeling itmade all the trouble worth it. personally there hasn't been a game this gen outside DS that has given such a rewarding feeling from completing it.

Same here. The overwhelming feeling of accomplishment I got from completing each area and destroying each demon was was worth more to me than the value of any other game. I've been swelling with pride every time I think about that game since the day I got my platinum trophy. :D

I love it. At first I was frustrated at how I couldn't figure out what to do and kept on dying. After getting used to it, you see the game differently.

Didnt mind it until my 3rd runthru. After a while i didnt like how you couldnt become a bit more relaxed as a powerful warrior owning everything - felt like you were always a level 1.

I actually bought the game just to see if it was actually that hard or if the people who were saying it was really hard were just bad at the game and didn't understand how to play it. Turns out it was just people who were bad at the game and didn't understand how to play it.

I even heard one guy say it sucked because the weapons were boring and you can't do combos like you can in Devil May Cry or God of War...

pro.. I LOVED the game.. still some tendency stuff to do... I did admit I ahd to use the "glitch" for that boss that are 2 of them.. :( beside that I do not think the game is that hard once you get use to the gameplay and care less about losing some souls  At some point I stop playing the story online thus, I was scare as hell of the others players that had more time to play and so a much higher lvl and power

if you can dodge and counter your sorted, picking the right equipment is a must as well. its hard to describe the difficulty if you use your brain the game is simple but it punishes you hard if you make a mistake and there is no forgiveness its like the game says "lol noob try again, oh and im holding your souls try and get em if you can ya wuss.............. p.s. ima kill you again......watch" :D it's games like DS that make me miss games like raven shield 3:rainbow six before the vegas games. poke your head out at the wrong time and thats it your just dead. no heath packs or healing items just the lasting memory of your own failings which help you learn and avoid the same mistake again.

You see, after you get used to the combat the game becomes not so hard. And when I say "get used to the combat" is learn that you can't run waving your sword like crazy.

But I agree that the game is unforgiving.

They should make a pause menu, the doorbell rang while I was fighting False King :(

The game for me actually wasn't as tough as some people said... I think over the whole course it took me like 17 hours and I died like 7-8 times, excluding a few boss fights that murdered me. Eventually I came to terms with the fact that if you play this game with the expectation that you SHOULDN'T die that often, then you are going to get frustrated a lot. When you realize that dying is part of the game, and that it's a major focal point of the experience, dying ceases to matter, and when you die you just go back and keep playing until you get past that part. And the fact that you can up and quit at any point makes it easier, because I could just walk away the second I started to get frustrated, and I would come back a few hours later or so, ready to try again.

I had little concern before buying the game that it might be to difficult since am not into impossible hard games.

However, Demon's Souls difficulty is perfect. Pretty much every time I died, it was because I did something stupid. For example: It's not cool to run up to 20+ feet enemy with giant axe with my one handed sword and take him head on like in other games.

This approach is met with swift dead from one or two swings. ;)

If you use your brain - the game is such a rewarding experience that rightfully won RPG of the year. Truly fantastic experience that is overlooked by to many gamers.

Pro all the way. People have to understand that the game is challenging, but it was always fair. The enemy is bound by the same rules as the player, so you could use that to your advantage. Not to mention the hints you can read and leave for other players to help them out. You're even encouraged to leave good hints. Death even provides benefits...something that hasn't been done in any game, as far as I can remember.

It is really tough going at first, but not unfair. Ironcally, after going through the game multiple times it ends up being really easy.

well that's expected... unless you mean continuous New Game +2, 3, 4, 5, etc... because I know it spikes up by 50% on playthrough 2, and then after that is goes up by approximately 7% every time.... so yeah, that sounds pretty crazy, but still fun.

I feel your pain... ... when I got stuck in a boss/lvl, meaning I did not advance no even a inch, no matter what I use that site that was a savior... the demon soul wiki thingy... BEST guide in game I have seen in a loooong time.

exactly... that is what make this game so perfect... is "real" it FORCE you to think what to do next.. and the fact that do not have a "game over" and you restart, but every single act affect the game is GENIOUS...

It didn't really affect my experience. If a game is fun, I don't care how easy or how hard it is, as long as it's not keeping me from progressing. I think it's a great game, and it would have been just as awesome without being so difficult.

true, but I think the whole atmosphere of the game would have been lost if that had been possible.... one of the things that made the game tense and immersive was that I COULDNT make it any easier... I either beat the challenge at hand or I gave up. Those were my options, plain and simple.

Pro definitely. I've only been playing for about 15-20 hours so far, but I'm loving it. It's not really a case of this game being difficult, but of almost all other games being easy.

I mean continuous NG. I went to soul level 342 and NG++++++++++++++ and it got pretty routine so I had someone soul suck me down to level 50 and restarted, just doing co-op. For me this is where the game really shines. I have over 1000 multiplayer sessions and still play most nights.

I haven't bought it yet (and didn't vote), but the difficulty was a major turn off. I play games to have fun, and replaying entire levels over and over and over and over doesn't sound like my idea of fun. I'll probably pick it up eventually because everyone says it's a great game, but I don't know what I'll think of it.

i havent bought it yet, but its in my to buy list for sure..all the gameplay ive seen so far looks fantastic and very alluring..plus the video review stated weapons feel the right weight, which is ESSENTIAL for me to play a game and get addicted to it..i love smooth combat. I must admit that I AM apprehensive about the whole difficulty thing, but I'm actually looking forward to checking it out. :P

the game is what it is, and i wouldn't change a thing. honestly though the difficulty of DS's is made out to be worse than it really is. i haven't played through NG+ yet, but i read that it does get harder on your next two playthroughs. i was worried about the restarting a level after you die thing, but i didn't mind that as much as i first thought i would.

seriously the difficulty increases like 50% on your second play through? wow, just wow. that's sick. i play my games pretty slow...so slow that my wife will be watching me, and make jokes on how slow i'm going. at 80hours into my first play through i was only a soul level 80. now that's just pathetic, but hey i'm enjoying it. The only difficulty the game posed was the learning curve... once you understand the environment and heighten your awareness, its pretty easy to make your way through the game. If by difficulty, you mean punishing (i.e dieing and having to start the stage from scratch), then yes. I found it extremely fun...mostly because the feeling of reaching your blood spot again is so rewarding lol. loved the game through and through.

The difficulty started out like wtf?! Then it became a challenge. Then later it wasn't even hard anymore. i don't think it would near have the praise its got if it was easy.

3rd option.

I only beat it once. The frustrations I got are enough. Hehe.

I like challenges in videogames, but not the type were you die a lot.

I think the save system is perfect... perfect for rage quitting, which you will do, a lot most likely. I know I did
