I'm so freaking glad Sony is going to take money for the PSN

I'm sick of people saying that they can deal with service inadequacies because it's free

I've been saying for months that I would gladly send Sony money just so I can get better performance out of the service and I've been emailing them WEEKLY saying I will pay for a better service

NOW WE ALL CAN!

This is what Sony desperately needed.

THE HAPPINESS CAN BE FOUND HERE

Well forget Sony if they do that. One of the biggest draws was the free online and adding new features while it was FREE.

One of the biggest reasons I traded my xbox live in for my PS3 was cus I don't play online enough to justify paying for it. I won't pay for Sony's either....

Yeah it was free and it performed like it's free. If people have an issue with it it's always "well it's free"

There's a ton of people like me who don't mind a few dollars a month so we don't have to deal with problems in the service

I'm all for a pay system where Sony is making money off of it and takes some of that money to upgrade the service

No more bottlenecks in the service

I actually may be willing to pay a little extra if they added a LOT of better features. Even Xbox live was really cheap.but, I just hope sony doesn't decide to have people to pay for what we already have. The current version of psn is not worth paying a cent for...

Playing games will still be free guys so worry not. Last I heard of this they were think about charging a subscription fee, for access to all their movies and games.

Sony knows that having the ability to play online for free is a big selling point for them. Knowing this, Sony would not eliminate the ability to play online for free. That service will remain free, as it should.

Don't just take my word for it; read the bolded print.

"SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral, and PlayStation Network," Hirai said in a statement given to British outlets such as CVG. "Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services." (Emphasis added.)

I've seen a lot of people go nuts over this, but there is no reason to. Sony will keep a free online service, but will also offer a subscription model. There is nothing wrong or unfair about that.

Yea ive put in countless hours on the PSN....and ive loved every second of it. Paying for it wont make the experience any richer....whatever performance issues your reffering too, they never hindered my play time online at all.

I played on PSN and what was it lacking besides in game chat? It did not lag alot in big games like COD4, and it has a good online store. Why should we pay, what are we paying for. No offense but people who have 360's IMO are just paying for Private chat and I guess more support from devs?

In all my emails to Sony I've said that I understand that they throttle all their downloads because it's a free service blah blah blah and that I would give them money so that if you have a high speed connection you can get downloads from the PSN just as quick

It's especially bad on the PSN because so many games that have a demo don't have the ability to unlock. That means if you like a demo you need to delete that then wait while the new one unlocks. You're not just downloading a 35K piece that unlocks the game, you're downloading the entire thing again

If we get to pay money just for the restrictions on speeds to be removed I will be ecstatic, anything more is pure bonus

they just said they were working on a PREMIUM account system, you have to pay for this account, and the benefits you get are free DLC, free premium avatars/wallpapers/themes and stuff like that.

but you will still be able to play online FOR FREE with a REGULAR ACCOUNT

The whole point of free was Sony adding new and good things to the service to EVERYBODY, not to the people who can pay 50 dollars a year. "Oh man this in game chat is awesome, can you do this feature?" No cause I don't want to pay a fee for something that should be free.

Nope, you'll get what's offered now

That's why I see this as being great for Sony's wallet, everyone is going to want the better experience online and the only way to get that is to pay Sony

There was nothing really wrong with the experience in the first place. All that was missing was in game chat. The whole point of it being free was to be good on OUR wallets.

I've never had much issue with download speeds. If it's going to take more than a few minutes I can do something else. The occasional 10 minutes download as opposed to a 5 minute download wouldn't be enough for me to cough up some extra cash on a monthly basis.

As long as I get to play for free still and download DLC for free. Like I said before, I don't play online MP games enough to justify paying for a service. Maybe they will say if you pay you can get private chats and enhanced friends list and iphone apps that lets you chat to your friends online ect.

Actually it says nothing of the sort

There's no clearly defined list of what will be free and what wont be free

The dream scenario is to pull all multiplayer options from the free service and then have people pay to play online but I think we're a year or two away before that takes hold

So far it's a mixture of content and services that will be offered for a price tag

Not only do you get more things if you pay but you'll also get a better experience with the PS3 if you pay

I love all of this

Too many people are of the mind that they are entitled to feature after feature, update after update, and service after service, all for free.

So long as the ability to play games online with your friends remains free, people really shouldn't be complaining. That alone separates them from the competition, and allows everybody to enjoy their games to the max for free.

Anything beyond that, however, Sony is well within their right to charge for.

If anyone, for whatever reason, disagrees, fine, but know that you're really expecting way too much. Paying will be optional, and that being the case, makes an optional subscription based model very fair.

I hope it fails badly. Just so Sony can once again learn the hard lesson. There is not one thing they could offer me to make me pay. The online is already great, the store is good. What could they offer to people who loves the free to get them to pay? You may love it but to bad for Sony you are just one person.

I'll wait for it before I say much on this. Personally I like the free aspect of PSN and depending on what Sony is going to make accessible with this new premium service I will stay that way.

The service now is not great, it's there and whatever problems are instantly glossed over because "it's free"

I can't be the only one complaining to Sony over and over saying I would pay if they would improve it

If it IS just me then awesome because I just made a multi billion dollar company change it's course in video game entertainment but I have a suspicion that it's more then just me

As for a fee everything has a fee. It's like basic cable and premium cable with DVR's and movie channels and HD channels

If 8 channels is enough for some people then more power to them, for the rest of us we want 800 channels in HD and are willing to pay for the opportunity

It took Sony 2 years+ to get things really rolling with the Free online aspect....You better hope history does not repeat itself for them getting things together for the paying service.

The problem I see with this service is that it doesn't change anything. Premium account means you pay for everything you originally didn't plan on, such as all the wallpapers, themes, and DLC for games you don't have. I could care less about layout or download speeds, since it's been mentioned numerous times the service is FREE. That means FREE, no one touches your wallet and your credit card gets moldy. The one thing (very minor) that I would want to pay for is updates and fixes much like the MMOs of today. They may not release updates every day/week/month, but at least there would be a dedicated team working on issues nonstop. Maybe this would allow them to attend to email complaints, opinions, or disputes on a daily basis, replying to 20-25% of emails sent.

Awesome job downloading on off peak hours, you're lucky

As I said before 20 down and 5 up, and I download from other things like I have a connection with 20 down and 5 up so yeah soon people wont be able to use that "oh your connection is bad" excuse for the PSN

Jaysonguy

yea my connection is 3 down 1 up and i havent had any problems downloading stuff, or playing online....

That's great

yea isnt it? maybe u should stop worring about the 2 minutes you are missing of MW2 and just wait for the update to finish or ur demo to download. It's people that complain about download speeds, and crappy servers that make comapnies charge for online...

One of the main reasons I bought the PS3, if not THE, was the fact that I got everything the same as everybody else, for no extra cost. Once people start paying to get better content, free users lose out. If that ever happens, then the PS3 has lost it's one, and only, exclusive feature I have any interest in. In a flash, I would switch to the Xbox.

I hope it fails badly. Just so Sony can once again learn the hard lesson. There is not one thing they could offer me to make me pay. The online is already great, the store is good. What could they offer to people who loves the free to get them to pay? You may love it but to bad for Sony you are just one person.GrandJury

You said. What could they offer to people who loves the free to get them to pay?.... I agree on that.
