It still is a HD movie disc player.  It still plays PS1 games and PS2 games (maybe not all of them; nevertheless it's a greater backwards compatibility library for PS2 games than Xbox 360 has for Xbox games).  It plays the PS3 games, and it has wifi built in. Give it time, just like the old Sony walkmans, Discmans, and Trinitrons, it has lasting power.  We'll see

Alex4 put it to words nicely but I can sum it up in one word... Socom.     Never much liked Halo, Gears is awsome but come on, freaking Socom, now my problem is that I have to race through GTAIV to devote my gaming time between Socom online and Smash bros. online... this holiday season might possibly be the most expensive ever theres just to many great games coming out to list.

I think the system itself, for what's in the box, has a justified price tag.  It's the games that are just way too expensive to me, right now.  How can they justify $59 for Genji: DotB with Ninja Gaiden Sigma just around the corner?  Why is Fight Night R3 still $59 on PS3, but much cheaper elsewhere?  Why is Splinter Cell: DA, a lower quality version of the game, sixty bucks, whereas even the collectors edition of the superior version can be found for fully half that cost?  Why are all of last years EA sports games still sixty bucks with the new stuff right around the bend?  Why is such a basic game as Ridge Racer 7 sixty bucks?  Why is an ourageously bad port of FEAR sixty bucks?

It's the software that's ridiculously overpriced right now, not the hardware.  Launch games all need to dip to thirty dollars, while games like Splinter Cell need to go lower as well just to be competitive with the other versions available.  That or most of them will end up in a Circuit City clearance bin on one of their big sales weekends for like, fifteen bucks.

The price i paid here in the uk was £425 with no games:O but since a stand alone blueray dvd player is around £500-£700 i aint complaining:) aslo the games are starting to drop a little bit...i picked up gengi 2 for £30 which is not bad for a brand new game.

im not hugely impressed by the ps3 price tag at all, yes it does have lots of features BUT where are the games, where are the demos to download.

if ps3 wants people to pay silly money for the console then give more back in my opinion.

saying that its a great system and motorstorm is probably the best lauch title ever ever EVER

I think Sony lost sight of its key market when they released the PS3. I mean sure, loads of people bought the PS2 because it was a cheap DVD player, but Playstation still means games console to the majority of people, and £425 or $599 for a games console is just too much to consider. Hence they don't take into account the extra features, and end up either not buying anything at all, or they get a competitor.

Thats the only reason the Wii is doing well, because the basic price is much cheaper than the other two, and casual gamers, or parents, or whatever will choose price over better technology.

I disagree.. there are games out there .. Great games even.. And just because you are not fond of them does not mean the console has no games.

To be honest I am not all that fond of the collection of games out right now but I'm not complaining because i knew this before i bought the console and i know there are a lot of other people who do enjoy the games out there right now.

And you are saying give them more back.. You think demo's are a bigger part of the price than all the extra features it has.. Something wrong in that sentence..

You pay more and you already get a lot more back than the other consoles with the special features.. why you are spouting demos as a proper reason for a higher price only god knows.. especially when the ps3 has a browser , blu-ray player, photo capabilities, memory card slots, dvd player, wireless Internet, free online, a big hardrive and a lot more.. and the blu-ray player alone already justifies the price..

If you don't agree with the adding of the player in the ps3 thats another point.. but it justifies its price whether you like it or not.

The high price justify the hardware you're getting in the system... Yes, games are lacking at the moment but you would expect that from a launch console and it was also the same case for the 360.

There are people who'd questioned about the PS3's power and the one who has it, is the one who hasn't got a PS3... I mean, from games like Resistance, Motorstorm, F1 etc the power of the PS3 is undeniable. The games can only get better from here.

The lack of interest for the PS3 right now is due to the price but mainly du to the games. When titles such as MGS 4, FFXIII, Killzone 2 are release, I think, IMO, people will start purchasing the PS3 regardless of the price.

Sony should just make sure, the new wave of games stays on schedule, the PS3's start is pretty much the same as the PS2, so they'll be just fine. The games library is filling out faster then any other next-gen console, so as long as they keep on schedule, PS3's got a bright future.

How can the price of the ps3 get any lower?  You get a durable system that won't break down, unlike the 360 that breaks down all the time, a blue ray player which alone is about a grand, and free online service!!  That is a steal for $600!!  I'll admit the games are a little bit lacking right now, but they are launch games.  The playstation 2 started the same way, and now you can't deny the huge success it has.  Just wait til Christmas time, and all the great games start coming out..  As far as the price start collectin cans people!!

Worth every penny already and gonna be worth a hell of a lot more later on as the games increase and improve. I already have 8 games and a half dozen movies (Blu-ray) and am never bored anymore when I have free time. Could be the best $600 I've ever spent on 1 item.

I do believe that the PS3 is the greatest value of the three consoles but, I also think it is a really expensive piece of kit to play videogames. I think the problem is that it is looked at as a videogame machine by the masses and not a high end piece of cutting edge tech.

Even tho i got a PS3 i think they should reduce the price by at least to $549.. i would love the install base to be higher which means more people online to play wit.. and the software aint good now but Rainbow Six: Vegas, The Darkness, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma are suppose to be released in June and thats a start.

They definately need to reduce the price or push the blu-ray more.  Also games that are available else where should be priced the same as the games ELSEWHERE.  People look at paying the full price for a game that they can get for 30 or 40 on the 360.  I'm not going to buy FEAR or Oblivion again at the full price.  AND Motorstorm is not the greatest game ever.  It doesn't even have split screen play and it is very one dimensional gameplay wise.

i've been using www.gottaplay.com as a means to subvert the high price of ps3 games.  i pay a monthly subscription and get to play all the games i want.  It is pretty awesome - especially considering how many must play games are coming out this quarter

sure the ps3s price is justified by the technology, even a bargain. but it's still too expensive for the market. this will be less of an issue once big name games start coming out later this year, but it really needs a combination of big game releases and at least a $100 price drop (maybe even as high as $200) before the average ps2/360 owner starts to think about getting a ps3. i own the 60gig ps3, but if my ps2 and dvd player didn't die on me within 2 days of each other, i'd still be waiting for mgs4 before i bought one.

uhm...you know that there is no way your pc can last 7 to 8 years without upgrading ..right... heck by the sound of it it could use an upgrade right now :P .... just listen to your self.. you just spent 700 bucks.. which is a 100 bucks more than the ps3

on something thats going to need an upgrade within 2 years if you wish to play the games of that age properly.. that would probably cost you about.. 300-400 bucks more just to play the games reasonably...again 2 years later you could upgrade again for 300-40 bucks.. so in the 4 year life span of the ps3.. (everybody knows its goint to last 10 years...and its going to be the best thing there is for at least 6 years)you already spent 1200 bucks minimal just to play the top games.. which is double the price of the ps3... without a blu-ray player.

Now I'm not saying console gaming beats pc gaming.. heck i love pc gaming and got a decent pc myself.. .but no one in their right mind is going to think that pc gaming is cheaper or is ever going to be cheaper than console gaming...

But seeing as that is your own opinion and you said minor upgrades i can only assume that your pc is not meant for high-end gaming... in which case you would be correct in saying that your pc might last longer... but still..
