Hey, peoples, I was thinking about how there are not a whole lot of games that really appeal to me. After giving it a lot of thought I realize its because a lot of games have a crap story. Or no story at all. I really am a big RPG fan. I love the MGS series. I like the Kingdom Hearts games. I really dig Valkyria Chronicles. I just love a good story in my game, and I see a lot of titles REALLY lacking in that department.

However, a good story isn't all it takes. Shotty gameplay can almost instantly make me lose interest in what happens next. Ugly graphics also contribute to a story losing its cinematic appeal and drain it of its realism. Now, multiplayer I could care less about. Its fun, but like I said: I buy games for a good tale to play through.

Anyway, what really draws you guys to a game? Just curious. :)

I look for multiplayer first. Originality comes next (like I won't buy Infamous, its just a guy version of Storm from X-Men!), and replay value. Some games are great like Heavenly Sword, but if I can beat it and there's no reason to play it again, I'll end up renting it.

Multiplayer, Concept, Gameplay, Replay. Everything else is just icing on the cake. Warhawk has NO story, graphics arn't that great and no single player...but I LOVE it thanks to the gameplay and multiplayer!

Gameplay is most important for me. As long as the game is fun, I could care less what genre it is or what it looks like. Story is very important as well, but not as important to me as gameplay is.

That would explain why you like VC so much! That's probably the most innovative and addictive gameplay I've seen in a long time. And a great story, too!

I great single player game, with at least adequate graphics. The game play is more important. I love puzzlers(lumines) and platformers(SMG), which don't require great stories. For an action/adventure (Prince of Persia), or RPG (Valkyria Chronicles), the story should be well-told and expansive.

That brings up a good point... Maybe a game can be good based soley on what its good at? RPGs are supposed to have a good story. FF7 without the epic story and characters would not be the gem it is. An RPG without a good story would suck. Puzzlers obviously don't need a story, so gameplay is all that matters there. Platformers are more gameplay focused where story is not too big a deal. Sports and fighting is obviously focused on gameplay as well. So I guess unless you're talking about things like MGS or God of War or something where there's an obvious balance of each factor the question is sort of irrelevant. That probably explains why so many have already checked the balance option. I should have left that one out.....

Atmosphere.

Mirror's Edge had a weak story that I've heard before (Mark Ecko's Getting Up), somewhat repetetive gameplay (well of course, it's a niche game) and character development that left something to be desired, but it still remains my favorite game to date.

A good balance of everything. That's what I would want in a video game. But I would mostly want good gameplay and a good story mode.

I look for mostly gameplay, but I always appreciate a good story. I also look for the "fun factor" in it. For example, GoW has an extremely high fun factor because I like ripping people in half and crazy boss fights. Elements like that attract me to certain games

Story and multiplayer. Then probably graphics. With good graphics its better to really play the game, as you feel like you are IN it.But I like a balanced game.Killzone 2 kind of lacks story, but the other areas are top notch.

i look for online co-op for campaign (not like that crap that is r2)..

then i will look at the gameplay and if it looks fun i will pick it up.. i don't care if it's repetitive, i don't get bored as fast as everyone else..

depending on the game i like a level up system, and also the genre of the game the battle system..

Yeah, it was a combination of the starkly contrasting visuals, including a bright color pallete, low-fi ambient electronic music and a huge city that really drew me in.

The only game to do it almost as well as Mirror's Edge for me, was Grand Theft Auto IV.

Yeah, I love the colors and the music in that game. I really didn't like the feel of the game (honestly, it frustrated the hell out of me) but I could look at that game all day. Its just like "being" somewhere else. Same as KZ2. The atmosphere is so "dense" that its almost like you're there. I agree about GTA4, too. Atmosphere is definately one quality that somewhat forgives the lack of others. I should have put that on the poll instead of that damn "balance" one. That one was too obvious.

I like Killzone 2's atmosphere also.. but I'm a bit biased against it - it's too gray.

It draws me in, certainly, but it's not like I want to be there, so I usually end up getting bored with the campaign. I bought it a month ago and I still haven't beaten it... it only takes me 2-3 days to complete a game's single player.

Hell, I beat MGS4 in one sitting. That was interesting... but Killzone 2, no can do.

I don't love you anymore..... :( LMAO I can see where some would shy away from KZ2. Definately. I, on the other hand, prefer that dark and forboding look. Black's always been my favorite color. I like games that are heavily shaded. Its so ominous. It just screams "somethings about to die in this b***h!!!" Then there are games like VC that are so colorful they hurt my freakin' eyes, but I love them cause they excell in something else. In VC's case its story and gameplay.

Great gameplay and story. Those are a must for me.K1LLR3175
My top two. They go hand in hand. Graphics should be up to par for the generation of gaming we're in, but it doesn't have to be the best of the best for its time. Multiplayer comes last for me. I specifically buy certain games for their multiplayer aspect, but I don't think every game needs it, and neither would I want all my games to have it.

For nowadays game. Story and gameplay are my first priority. Fail in both means garbage. Average PS2 graphic is my minimum requirement . Online multiplayer can go to hell because i never touch this feature.

Yeah, I meant to comment on that myself but didn't want to be rude. Storm never shot anything from her hands.... She merely CONTROLLED the weather. Its obvious that Cole is Starkiller's much cooler cousin from Earth. I personally think InFamous has some originality to it, but it is the sum of a lot of other things. The electricit actually makes me think of the plasmids in Bioshock. There's some Assassin's Creed- like wall climbing. He's adopted some force powers from his cousin Starkiller..... Overall, though, there's nothing really like this at all. Its a bunch of cliches rolled into one great looking original game. Either way, why would you not buy a game as promicing as InFamous based soley on the fact that he reminds you of another character? Things don't have to be original to be good. They just have to be better.

Great gameplay and story. Those are a must for me.K1LLR3175
Same, story and gameplay are what counts. Graphics are a nice bonus.

gameplay mostly, and graphics come in second place (now that i have a good pc and ps3. but for wii, it's all gameplay) But if it's JRPG, the first and foremost thing is the list of voice actors.

=( this guys opinion kind of scares me...nothing against it at all i can see the love for multiplayer and stuff...but then to say infamous= Storm? D= Cole is clearly the serious version of Static Shock. And personally i look for a mix between gameplay (so i can actually have fun) and atmosphere. Probably why i love Oblivion, KH and Uncharted soo much. Each has such amazingly immersive worlds, whether through sheer beauty or just charm (with kh)

Every battle that Storm ends up winning in every X-Men, she does by shooting lightning through her hands, aside from using wind, its her other bread and butter weapon. BTW I'm thinking a Hale Berry instead of Cole might not be such a bad idea! There are also a lot of games where you can play with lightning (Bioshock, Oblivion, Force Unleashed, Fabel 1 & 2, just to name a few) just not one built entirley around the concept, so the idea in InFamous isn't anything new by a long shot. Listen to the beginning of the preview::: "Players will experience what happens when a real person suddenly starts developing super powers. Will they exact revenge, protect the innocent or do little of both? InFamous lets players unravel an evolving mystery, experience fame and/or infamy and battle powerful, iconic villains…all the while feeling what it is like to become a modern day superhero.".. Yeah, thats totally unlike Storm from X-Men. Very original. Anyways, am I saying the game is going to bomb? Nah, I'm just saying I probably won't *buy* it because its not very fresh, and having something new to bring to the table is pretty important to me. Since the concept isn't very new, it needs to have something to catch my attention. I could be wrong, but no multiplayer or co-op? It doesn't seem to have a strong story and the graphics don't seem anything too impressive. I really don't believe it will do that well. But to each his own. I will say this much, take a look at a few of the best games out there and see what made them fun/great. MGS4=..everything lol but next: GTA multiplayer, story/original idea. Oblvion: Graphics, story. Killzone: Graphics, multiplayer. Bioshock: Graphics, story/idea. LBP: Multiplayer, Idea. Call of Duty: Multiplayer, graphics. VC: Graphics, story....InFamous? You get the idea.

For me personally - Gameplay is the most important factor.

However a great game has to contain balance of all aspects.

Thankfully, we sometimes do get gems that are worth buying, re-playing and keeping in collection for long time. (I'm looking at you Snake!)

Wow, that wall of text hurt my eyes. lol Na, I get where you're coming from, dude. Just the way you said it earlier kinda implied you wouldn't play it because its over done or something, and I just don't think it has been. Sure lots of games use lightening (its farkin' lightening!!!), but like you said: No games actually been based around a lightening power. I think the graphics look pretty darn decent (compared to prototype for sure). I like the idea of being a down-to-earth superhero in a big, modern day city. Its been done, sure, but i don't believe its ever been done well. Anyway, I think it'll be cool. I don't expect everyone to like it. I just really thought it was funny that you said he reminded you of storm. I still can't think of a time I saw her shoot lightening from her hands, though. If she ever did then that's not cool. She's not supposed to channel it! lol ................... Don't really see where this fits into the point you were making, but I agree with all of it: " I will say this much, take a look at a few of the best games out there and see what made them fun/great. MGS4=..everything lol but next: GTA multiplayer, story/original idea. Oblvion: Graphics, story. Killzone: Graphics, multiplayer. Bioshock: Graphics, story/idea. LBP: Multiplayer, Idea. If the story's no good in that game I will be pretty disappointed. :(
