Role-playing-game kinda vague.

So is Killzone 2 a RPG, you play the role of a anti-helghast solider.

A game where you Role-Play. Usually where you level up through gaining XP (expiernce) and gain new spells/magic/abilities. Think of like Dungeons and Dragons type of thing

The way I'd describe it is a game that features a character or many characters that you "level" up and progress through on a journey. You increase their individual stats, progressively fight stronger enemies, and usually partake in a longer story-driven adventure.

I can't really explain it that well. I'll let someone else take the lead on this one.

Call of duty has all that besides the "longer story driven adventure".

Call of duty has all that besides the "longer story driven adventure".

But Call of Duty's main focus is shooting and action. A role-playing's focus is to progress through a long story at smaller intervals, take on quests, and make your character grow. Again, I'm not an expert. I'm letting someone else take the lead. If you're looking for an argument from me then you can forget it.

The "Role" refers to the classes like if your a Soldier or a Mage or a 10th level mace wielding Gorgon :P Not actually just playing any character in a game. Its not even the stats and stuff because that stuff is pretty commonly used.

Personally, the term RPG is really dated and doesn't make a lot of sense. It's much better to say a game is medieval fantasy, or sci-fi fantasy. People should really stop putting games into categories in the first place.

Usually two things make up an RPG:

1.) It usually has some dialog options. And it often effects how the rest of the game is.

2.) Usually there's some collecting and skill progression involved.

And KZ2 is far from being an RPG, some examples are Demon's Souls, Mass Effect, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Valkaria Chronicles.

Why would it not make sence to cat games. If not every game would be labled the same. Shooter games are nothing like story/rpg games.

If you wanna get extremely technical, an RPG involves turn-based momentum. If you go back to the pioneer days, that is.

These days it's really just a label for describing a game that has multiple facets. Character progression, turn-based/active combat, item collection, mathematic outcomes, story-heavy progression, and all that jazz.

Nah, my friends also get mixed up in what RPGs really are as well. "Hey, what kind of games do you play?" "Oh, mainly role playing games." "Whoah! You play RPGs? What kinds?" "Erm, Modern Warfare 2, Bioshock, NHL 2010." "..."

Bioshock kind of has a RPG element to it though, it's not a classic FPS.

This is one of the oldest debates in the video game world. I think that you need experience points, where when you kill things, you get them and your stats become better. In RE5, you can use your gold to upgrade your weapons (making them better, thus making 'you' better) and one could argue that that makes it a light RPG element, and actually, that claim is hard to negate given how it works out, though I would never call RE5 an RPG.

No, an RPG means a Role Playing Game. Personally, that means freedom to role play as any character you wish, by having choices in what or how you do things. The term is out dated though, and we need a new term to describe games with character progression and dialogue choices.
