I still don't get what's so good about that, I sure understant chat when in the same game, but why would people chat when they're doing totally different things? Imagine you're with your squad in MAG and need only to concentrate on that and suddenly 3 friends come to chat about their Warhawk victory or the game they just bought? that's nonsense to me

It's more for singleplayer games, so you can shoot **bleep** with one of your friends while they're plugging away in FFXIII and you're shooting dudes in Valkyria Chronicles. It's pretty cool on the 360, nice to have it on the PS3 too.

I can't see the attraction myself, people don't really have anything important to say that can't be just sent in a text message.

Do you have any idea how inconvenient it is to pause the game every time you want to send a text? Voice chat is so much better. You might not understand it but a lot of people do, and they really want it...and they're louder than you so they're getting it. :P

Yeah, cross chat is extremely convenient. Pausing the game to text message is a chore, especially if you don't have a usb keyboard like me at the moment.

So start up a text chat, it will save you those precious few seconds and it'll save for any awkward "soo......" moments during your important voice chat.

I've always said PS3 owners should have been asking for the party system (ability to form a party, invite friends and jump in and out of games) instead of the pointless cross game chat.

I still have to pause the game to do the text chat. Still a bother. Cross chat is a good thing. Maybe not for you, but I think the majority of people will welcome the addition.

imo the majority wont pay for it since online is free on psn , and even those who paid wont enjoy this feature to the full extend because of people who have not bought it

I agree. I used to play WoW, and naturally me and a bunch of people hung out in ventrilo all the time. It was nice to chat, laugh and joke, and have a good time while questing/farming/PvPing, etc. It's great.

Like the TC said, when it comes to MAG or a serious game of BC2 or something, then no. This is where logic comes in...voice chat doesn't just automatically start. You have to invite people to a "party," or you yourself have to be invited.

It's social interaction. I'd have fun chatting to a few guys from here who are on my PSN list while playing a game that doesn't require my headset for something else (MAG.) By your logic, there is no point in a phone as nothing is so important as what can't be written in a letter. Kinda the same deal, and it's silly.

I don't understand it at all. I work all day and come home to my wife and 3 kids - when I settle in for some gaming the LAST thing I want to do is talk the whole time. When somebody wants to talk to me I put the game on pause. I can't imagine how anyone could actually enjoy a game while carrying on a conversation with people about totally unrelated stuff.

I grew up during the arcade days. Even standing next to each other, my friends and I rarely talked more than randomly blurted words produced from response to onscreen goings on. Even on the 360 my buddy and I hardly chatted during a same game chat, let alone cross game. We live in a new age where something is wrong unless you're perpetually distracted.

Of course I do, but not while gaming because it's distracting and quite frankly (and this goes for everyone here) you don't have anything important to say that requires you to be talking to your friends all the time.

You don't know that. Me and a friend bought White Knight Chronicles and FFXIII at the same time and are in the same general area in the story. There were times that I had to call him to get his advice/opinion. I would much rather grab my headset and voice-chat him then have to hold my phone with my ear while I wait for it to ring...wait for him to answer...it's just easier, and you can't assume that no one would have a good use for it just because you don't

So, you never just shoot the breeze with buds? You need a specific topic that requires 100% of your time and concentration? Weird.

Like I said before, I used to hang out in WoW on a ventrilo channel with 40+ people at a time, all laughing and joking around, playing the game. It's not a distraction...you aren't driving here, you're playing a game. Sure, if there's important dialogue or something, mute them for a sec. Otherwise, it's fun to hang out with buds while playing a game.

I'm aware of that. But instead of contributing to the conversation, he read the thread title, maybe the first post, then added his "thoughts". It's a 2-page thread, not a strain on one's reading ability. In my eyes.

You can't compare WoW. It's a grind heavy game and not heavily taxing on the reflexes. It has text chat as it's default form of communication for crying out loud.

Let's give an example.

Hxc is playing Final Fantasy XIII. He's played through it before, knows the story and has subtitles turned on. He has the sound turned low to talk to me. I am currently playing BFBC2 online, just in a relaxing way, not contributing vocal support to the game. As there's no story to follow, justmultiplayer shooting with no need to follow vocal orders, I turn it down a bit as well. So we chat about games, anime, what have you. Then say Young Charter comes online, and starts playing Oblivion. He isn't too worried about paying attention to dialogue or story as he means to only explore some tombs and farm some alchemy stuff. So we invite him to the convo, and now the three of us are chatting, just hanging out, playing a game.

This is a very desirable feature, and will be a big boon for the PS3.

Of course I can compare WoW, are you kidding? Try telling a 40 man premade to use text chat, or a 25 Heroic group to forget event. It's a multiplayer game with solo elements. We can hang out while PvPing, farming, questing, camping, whatever. And we can all get together for specific raids and instances, it's a perfect example. And let's not forget, the PS3 has a text messaging service for its primary communication as well, so the examples are very similar, and therefore valid.

Exactly. Keeping up with a perfect DPS rotation, maintaining panic healing, and properly tanking while being able to commuicate requires voice support. Or adapting toanother teams tactics in an arena match, you're gonna type things like "LoH me." "Crap, ROgue, throw down a trap." "Stunlocked." all while evading/adjusting/attacking? O.o

I never said WoW shouldn't use voice chat. In fact my comment was pro voice chat use in WoW. Farming is mindless, grinding is mindless. Raids can get mindless. Voice chat works perfect for those elements. PvP and Arena combat are about the only attention heavy activities in the entire game and require voice chat for strategizing. Compare those experiences to playing through a game with a 30 hour tops running time with narrative and story driven gameplay.

And your point being?Every game is going to be a story-driven game? We can't play a shooter or a racer while chatting? We can't farm or grind levels in RPG's? If you're playing through a story driven game, and you come across a cutscene or important part of the story, you say "Back in a sec, guys." and you hit mute. That isn't hard to do, then once over and back to gameplay, you unmute.

Thanks for the step by step.

My point being cross game voice chat is not a game breaker. I wouldn't mind it but I'm not rabid for it like many are. I'm perfectly content with enjoying games and free time on my own with no need for additional and/or unnecessary commentary from anybody.

And fine, that's your opinion of it. DOesn't change the fact that it's a big draw for a lot of people, and it's nice to see its availablity being added to the PS3.

What's even classier is how my experience with voice chat is clearly stated in a previous post yet you felt it necessary to slap a quick and dirty "how-to" together for me.

It is.
DOesn't change the fact that it's a big draw for a lot of peopleKhadaj32
Obviously.
, and it's nice to see its availablity being added to the PS3.Khadaj32
I look forward to the day it's available. It'll make a nice addition to the functionality of the PS3. I have no doubt I'll use it but you won't find me signing petitions and planning boycotts to get it done.

So start up a text chat, it will save you those precious few seconds and it'll save for any awkward "soo......" moments during your important voice chat.MushroomWig

Well actually someone who has PSN+ can invite regular PSN members to their cross game chat.

Thanks for your input. If you read some other posts, you'll see where we've explained why it's a desirable feature. Again, thanks.

 I love this whole "I like it, so you're wrong" mentality when there really isn't a wrong answer to begin with. If you read the topic title, you would also know this thread started out in a not so favorable opinion on cross game chat. So thank you for your "input" and taking this thread a little too literally. Your opinion is not the "be all, end all" my friend. Might want to calm that down a little bit:P

As for my *ahem* opinion. Cross Game Chat is useless to me and not even desired in the least bit. Any shred of interest from me would depend if any of my family or friends have a PS3. Since none of them do, screw Cross Game Chat.

Yeah, cross chat is extremely convenient. Pausing the game to text message is a chore, especially if you don't have a usb keyboard like me at the moment.

Sorry, I don't know why but I've been kind of a dick for the past few weeks :| Not that there's an excuse for it... That is such a pet peeve of mine though. Nothing gets under my skin more than someone commenting w/o reading anything.

I want it , so if a friend and I are playing the same SP game, we cant talk about whats going on in it and etc.

but other than that I play MP games more cause I like to talk to my friends and I like human interaction, so cross game chat, would be nice with games like oblivion, where it gets kinda of boring when youre by your self lol.

It's not just gamespot. Anywhere. Like, we were having a group discussion in one of my lit classes last semester and it was going great. All of a sudden this kid with a slow, stupid sounding (no offense to anyone) southern drawl says "This is what I think...." Then repeated the opinion that started the discussion without adding anything worth saying to it. I immediately raised my hand and said "Thanks so much for your valuable opinion, next time use your head." Long story short, it's the whole "I'm going to 'contribute' without knowing what the hell is going on" mentality that pisses me off. Surely you can understand that.

Maybe so, but don't take this place too seriously. This is practically garbage "off loading" entertainment. There are those a plenty who are far worse on this forum. Either you drive yourself nuts with it, leave, or laugh at it and "roll it off". We are all aliases here. I can see getting pissed off with stupid people in real life. But here is all stupid (minus a select few) and it's just text with nothing serious or engaging. I mean, why argue about something like "Cross Game Chat"? People here think PS3 owners and 360 owners are "separate nations". Need I say more?
