I think that Sony made a ton of mistakes this gen.

1. They priced the system way too high.

2. They failed to keep exclusives (by failing to sign contract agreements).

3. They didn't get make enough systems on launch day due to Blue Ray laser sortage.

4. They got way too cocky and thought that they could just sit back.

I think that if they had kept the exclusive games that were suppose to be exclusive everyone would have bought it even at $599 (remember the huge lines and fights on launch day to pay $599 for it?). I also think that if they had the millions of units they promised to have by the end of 2006, their base would be bigger and they would have sold way more games. If Sony fixed one of these problems than the others would be less of a problem. Remember when Assasins Creed was a PS3 exclusive? Sony thought they were #1 and that they could take their time. They turned the most hyped next gen console and turned it into.... Well something less. Sony WTF.

they've had a serious advertisement campaign fail, although I don't know why people let adds decide what they will buy.

I think it's possible for Sony to still come out 2nd this gen (beat the 360) if they try to fix their mistakes. Profitablity wise they can only break even. They lost over $3 billion on it according to their 2008 earnings report. Their losing more on it than they made at the height of the PS2.

losing exclusives and the ads kinda sucked

they should have the octopus add thing from the begining

and instead of going with the high and mighty beauty thing they should have stuck to what made them great

ie being in your face funny

I think everyone enjoyed watching crash bandicoot screaming through a megaphone at the nintendo office buildings

I think the only huge mistake they made was their investment of time and money into the creation and development of PSN Home.

Loosing too many exclusives and removing backwards compatability were the two big mistakes. I don't consider the price to be too high causing it to be a problem though because i'm sure if the console still had it's exclusives and it's backwards compatability people wouldn't mind the higher price.

There biggest mistake was having no good launch games. Resistance carrying a system? Not a good sign. They've started to turn it around though.

The amount of exclusives lost as well as the blatant lack of real marketing is a fail on Sony's half. I mean, who loses Final Fantasy as an exclusive anyways? I bet you M$ would've never done it.

yea asked everyone around here they said PS3 has no games (thats in lauch day) they should have made a GTA just for the PS3 Lauch Day! Resistance is ONE good exclusive but not alone can it carry all the trouble of launch day

They've started to turn it around but can they make it? The backwards compatibilty thing will be fixed soon via a firmware update, they found out how to emulator the PS2 GPU in addition to the PS2 CPU that they already had used in the early 80GB models. If the PS3 had all of the exclusives it should have what gamer would mind paying a high price for the best games? The exclusives thus far have been top notch though. The ridicoulous amount of time spent of Playstation Home was also a waste. Does anyone here even use it? Profitablity wise they're done for.

The biggest mistakes to the majority of consumers is the High Price. The 360 and PS3 are too similar to the mainstream consumer to have a price difference of more than $100. There isn't much setting the PS3 apart from the 360 for people to justify paying $100 to $200 more for a PS3. It doesn't help that there really isn't any marketing for the PS3 in the first place. I remember when the 360 came out and i was bombarded with 360 commercials, PS3 came out there were little to none. Yeah brand name will sell you a few units but Sony just got ignorant. I really can't think of anything that really affected me all that much because i'm pretty satisfied with my PS3 but i understand people's reasons for not having one.

I think that gamers would have payed top dollar for a system if it had all the great exclusive games. If you look back to the PS3 launch everyone wanted to buy one even for $599 because of the great games it was going to have. Now that most of the exclusives are gone the reasons to buy the PS3 are few. Why did you guys buy a PS3? Im planning to get one over the 360 because of the upcoming Slim one, a few great exclusives, and the freakin rrod think. Rrod is way more common that ylod.

Losing exclusives. Even after losing alot of third party exclusives Sony still has a great line up of first party exclusive titles, as well as a few solid third party ones. But all in all they lost exclusive rights to alot of big name series that would help drive up sales if they had been exclusives still.

In the start the price was way too high and they lost so many exclusives it uncountable...

Final Fantasy could have been the least that they kept.
Now they lost MGS too....

Its because MS spent so much time making a strategy and using their money made of other things to strengthin their gaming area...

Sony didnt do this, so they lost their exculsitivity

Good marketing is very important and I feel it's their biggest mistake this gen. Sony needs to realise good advertisement attracts people to the product, it's just how it is and Sony really needs to market the console and games well as it's been proven on rival systems that marketing is great for the console and games.

The original price could have been cheaper, but it would have been a terrible business decision on their part. I believe they could have downgraded the software, reducing the cost but I admire them for sticking by the technology and continuing with it.

Poor marketing is really their biggest problem.

I'm sure if the games and the console itself was advertised better from the start there would have been a larger install base by now. People are fickle, and the majority will buy whatever they are influenced to.

In the UK for example, the PS3 was advertised quite heavily several months prior to it's release. The adverts were aimed towards adults and were usualy obscure, and most of them were so subtle that if you didn't watch till the end you would have no idea it was advertising a games console. These adverts stopped only a few months after the console was in stores, and I can't recall ever seing another PS3 ad on British television since then.

The same goes for a lot of games. I remember when game adverts would show it on a different console, but would still say it was also available on PS3. I don't see this much anymore in multi-plat game ad's.

Agreed, this is (imho) the main reason. For a big period, 360 was the only next-gen console available in the market (beside wii). Also, it's just a matter of bloody ads campaign and marketing which sony messed up a bit. Think about it, what does a 360 offers more than a ps3 (now days)? Nothin much really, they also doesn't have any uber-exclusives to make me envious to be honest (beside fable 2 maybe). The 360 ends up costing way more than a ps3 at the end of the fair, because remember that ps3 is a complete system with all you might need, xbox is cheaper at the beginning but by the time you add a wireless adaptor, a controller battery pack, live fee...you pretty much spent more than 399$. Playstation 3 also is a blu-ray player which makes it a perfect media station (which could make you spare another bunch of good money, since an high definition player is way too much expensive these days). So in my humble opinion is just a matter of timing and marketing. But there's still time by the way....

Price was too high, especially at launch. I've owned a PS1 and PS2, but when I saw that $600 price tag - on a video game console!?!? - I thought they must have gone insane. Their advertising campaign was pathetic, putrid, pitiful. And that's putting it nicely. If you want to sell an extremely high priced console, you damned well better tell people what they're getting for all that money. They failed epically.

PS4 should be adverised so bad that people will think there is no Xbox 720 or wtf Xbox 3 is gonna be called :D

Advertisments that show evrey little bit of the damn thing, not just some shots of the thing and a commentator saying stuff... And PS online should be advertised more. Way more

The PS3 should have picked up where the PS2 left off.. for the longest time Resistance was the only game holding it up.. I think they rushed it out, the PS2 was holding its own.. the release of the PS3 should have been another year or at least a half a year..

Although the PS3 launch was pretty lame, i would have to say that fails in comparision of the time, effort and resources put into home..

Also i don't mind the loss of some of all the exclusives, because new exclusives always arise.. but what bothers me is that multiplatform games aren't forced to run and look better than the competitor.. It seems like multiplat games get made on the XBOX and when that disk is full, the PS3 version is done.. just a made up example is;

say a game is made and on an hd disk 100% is taken up but on a blu ray disk only 70% is taken up.. then the game is released.. that just doesn't seem right.. 30% left but since the other disk is full so both versions are done.. Sony should say to them well this game better have no load times, no glitches/errors and runs perfectly smooth, if you aren't going to add anything else for the space you have left..

idk just my thoughts, that example is completely made up and the % is obviously wrong.. but a lot of multiplat games feel that way..

I think PS3 is doing a great job dominating a big part of the US market and most of japan's market. They are also doing an awesome job trying to release more and more exclusives that has come already (infamous) and the ones that are coming soon (GoW 3, MAG, Uncharted). But Sony has its failures too. I mean they are having a hard time keeping customers the US and Europe's market for two reasons. 1- They are a marketing tragedy. I mean games like white knight, or infamous were rarely advertised for. They simply fail to keep the hype up, and they act like they don't even care about the hype at all. 2- They have the "I know what's better for you, just sit down, shut ur mouth, and i'll do the work". This attitude has produced great games like LBP. But at the same time they failed to deliver what users are asking for. Like trophies for MGS 4 and a better controller. I can't help it but feel like they give a crap about what we, the players, think about their products.

I personally believe its the price. There are countless individuals that will not, and even in some instances, can not purchase a video game system at $400. 3 years after launch and it's still out of most peoples price range, seems ludicrous really. They're doing decently right now, but if they would cut the price by $100, I think they would come out on top soon after. Also, their advertisment campaign is downright terrible.

its the price and the fact that the ps3 doesn't really have an identity. ps2 was pretty casual like the wii this gen with solid games sprinkled in. 360 is a shooter's console. Ps3?-no focus as of yet

I think it was making soo many different versions of the PS3. At launch you had the 20gb and 60gb, then they discontinued those and started the 40gb. The 40gb had no backwards compatibility and lost the flash card readers. Then they brought in an 80gb mgs4 package which had some backwards compatibility? then they discontinued both of those and now are selling the 80gb and 160gb uncharted bundle. Neither of these have BC. Seriously this pisses me off..

They priced it way too high. I have no doubt that if the PS3 launched for the same price as the 360, it would be selling way better and the 360 would be in third place.

As much as I love my Bluray, this was the main factor for the price being so high at the begining. It was also one of the reasons the console had to be delayed (shortage of parts).Sony should have left it out and then launched earlier and cheaper.

Priced too high. Lower price means more people buying PS3's and that means developers have a better incentive to stay exclusive

Do you guys think that people would pay $599 if the PS3 had all of the exclusive games it should have? If console has all the best games who wouldn't buy it? People were fighting and robbing each other for a PS3 on launch day. People wanted to get a chance to pay $599 for it.

Zero Advertisment

Zero old school classics on the ps store

Ps store is pretty weak
