9 Would have to be the one I just couldnt get into. 13 Is ok so far. I've been busy with God of War 3 and Heavy Rain. Back On Topic. I'm actually shocked to see peoples opinions about not liking 8 or 7. How?! lol Like they say everyone has their own opinion I suppose...........;)

jrocksreturn

well, I for once loved FF7 and 8.

However, the last time i played either of those two games was when i was around 12-14 years old (I'm 24 now). And frankly, I have no idea if I will enjoy either of them today as much as i did back then. Not only because of being older and having a much better ability to grasp "XYZ," but also because of being somewhat jaded by all the rpgs I played over the years.

Neither of those reasons would make me dislike either of the aforementioned games if ever decide to re-play them, but I almost positive I would see them in a "different" light (I'm not saying in a good or bad light, just a different one).

People these days are full of it.

I've played more or less every FF game available and I'd have to say X-2 isn't the worst, but at least the weakest.

The series has gone down hill since VIII. Sadly I own all FF games from VII to XII. I have yet to play XIII but I plan on buying it soon. For all the hate I show the series since X came out I still go out and buy em. I don't know why either. Hoping XIII is good. Does XIII have those androgynous man-boy things that were in X and XII?

i have stopped to buy FFs cuz i were very disapointed about the X-2 and the XII.and the X were near to be bad too but i have enjoyed the blitz ball tournament but the price were not high when we win a tournament and +side quest were boring.

[QUOTE="Abecale"]

[QUOTE="TheEldestGod"] He burned the town down because it was currently the source of his pain. They had been keeping all those records and had his mommy locked up in a Mako Reactor. He became evil because he was lied to and used by a people he wasn't even a part of. He suddenly found himself lost and alone as one of the last of his kind and not only that... He realized he could be better than them. There's no real way to explain why a mad man goes mad and does the thing he does, but there's no denying that Sephiroth had his reasons. Tell me why Ultimecia or Kuja were hell bent on destroying the world again? ......................... Anyway, back story is a major part of character development. FFVII had more of that than any other game in the series. Their personalities changed too as they all began to realize that they had something much more precious that they had to protect and from something much more corrupt than they had originally believed. They came together as a team of heroes just as well as they do in all the other games. .......................... I don't know why I'm typing all of this. I don't care that you don't like it. I just think your argument is total bull..... If you honestly believe the things you say then I don't see how you could've been playing the game with an open mind and giving it the chance it deserves. TheEldestGod

Hey, you can like the game all you want, posts walls of text, etc. Doesnt change how im going to feel.

Your not even understanding what im trying to convey. Im expressing how i felt about the game and you think its total bull? Ive played it twice now, i did give it the chance, its cliche story, characters arent going to save it. The characters, they dont change, they band together to take down the evil, and then go after the bad guy. You talking about open mind to me, maybe you should try the same. I cant even have a decent healthy debate when your the one getting so petty.

The story isnt as great, imo, as some of its others in the series, at times, predictable, its shallow. The personalities are never fully fleshed out. Cliche Characters.

Barret..please, what a walking black stereotype if i ever saw one, Yuffie is the generic loud kid thing you see in so much other forms of japanese media. And you all know Sephiroth can never hold a candle as an awesome villian next to Kefka.

Hell the predescessors before FF7 all had GREAT stories, i really felt immersed in, that felt epic. FF7, i didnt really feel that.

Cliche? Seriously? See, while I totally agree that you're allowed your opinion and would respect it were it based on at least some sort of legitimacy, I cannot fathom how you could possible call this story cliche......... You say Barret was a walking black stereotype while all he did that was stereotypical was be black and at times talk like mr. T. Sahz had a big fro, dual pistols, and funk music playing during a lot of his scenes. That's not stereotypical? I can't understand what you're trying to convey because you are trying to convey something very untrue. If you didn't like it that's great, but calling the story cliche and the characters one-dimensional is a text book case of bull****. Just saying. If you look up proper definitions to those words and compare FF7 to the rest of the series you'll see what I mean. Until then.... Whatever. I appreciate the fact that this game is my favorite in the series because it puts me on a completely different level with someone who's idea of cliche is a uniquely told masterpiece like none other in gaming history. ;)

Its not a masterpiece, there are much better final fantasies than 7, and much better RPG's than 7. If you cant see that, and open your eyes, i feel very sorry for you. Text-book case of **** Your so dug in deep into the fandom of FF7, you havent even stepped back to survey any of the other games. Also yet here you are defending it, all just because i said that i think its the worst in the series. Calling my point of view on the game **** because it doesnt match with your view on the game. Saying my arguement isnt 'legit'? I welcome reasoning as to why you think its a masterpiece, because all ive read from you so far is blind defending and accussing.

Owning FF1-FF13 (excluding FF11) I'd say my least favorites where FFX-2, FF2, FF9 and FF7.

I thought FF13 was great. Not the best but certainly not the worst. I do wish it was easier to make Gil though. 55 hours into the game I have yet to reach 1 million gil at least. :P

I disagree with this on so many levels. I thought IX had thee best graphics and art design, but to each his own.

I don't know about worst FF game, but the most overrated for me was Final Fantasy III(VI). People were quick to say that VII was overrated and that III(VI) was superior, but I thought the game was very dull. The plot and characters were unoriginal to me, and it got boring to play near the end.

I call it bull**** because it isn't true. Cliche isn't a word that describes an opinion. Cliche describes fact, and the fact is FF7 is NOT cliche. If, however, you can explain to me exactly what makes it cliche then I will more than happily express my thoughts about how it is a solid masterpiece. I've played many many games throughout the years and have enjoyed them thoroughy. What has almost always made a game great to me was the story. I'm not blindly in love with FF7. I play all my games with my eyes wide open and FF7 is one of the best things I've seen in my entire gaming career. I could just as easily call you blind, but I know you're not. You just have an opinion that you can't find any proper means of justifying other than saying things that just don't make sense.

I've played VI, VII, X, XII and am currently going through XIII, and out of all those my least favourite is X. I don't hate it, yetI still haven't finished it, since i just lost interest in it. It's a shame, since i enjoyed most of it, until i got towards the end.

As for the other FF games i've played, each has entertained me during the time i played them. I really liked FFVII, and have fond memories of it, but i played it ten years ago. I doubt i'd feel the same way about it if i played it again. Same goes with VI.

I am interested in getting VIII off of PSN, yet there seem to be a lot of mixed opinions on it, moreso than any other FF game in my opinion. Some of my buddies absolutely love it, and others loathe it, so i'm unsure about if i'd like it.

My opinion doesnt make any sense? The story and characters are very cliche, im sorry but they have all been done before, many times, in JRPG's. But cliche in JRPG games isnt really saying much, FF7 just shows it more. Its no point arguing with you. You avoid questions i ask, convieniently leave out or ignore other things i say, and no matter what point i make, you vaguely rebuttle with your own opinion. So thats cool, you can like FF7 if you want, ill just be content with something better to play.

My Opinions are only **** according to you, so really, that doesnt mean much.

@ The Main Argument of this Thread: I'd love to step in, seeing how I don't like VII (lol sig/avi irony), but it seems the argument is stepping a bit beyond VII and into a category I'm not 100% familiar with. (JRPGs before VII) The big question is whether or not the story and characters of VII are cliche, right?

A cliché or cliche (pronounced klē-ˈshā) is a saying, expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel.Wiki

The only way I see FFVII being cliche', would be if the type of story/characters have been overused in other games before Final Fantasy VII was released. In all honesty, I don't really like the game too much since I played future JRPGs first, so my opinion is obviously not gonna give the game points. Void it. =p So, back on topic:

Was it cliche?

Its okay. I still love you. :P All I wanted was an example of what makes the game cliche and you refuse to give one. Since it being cliche is the reason you don't like it then its important to me to know what that cliche element is. We're not really even arguing. You're just saying something that you don't have any way of proving. Since wether or not something is cliche is completely proveable you can't just write it off as your opinion. Cliche is not an opinion. I'm not the one avoiding questions. You are. Tell me why this game is cliche and I'll tell you why its unique. ;)

No, it wasn't cliche. Final Fantasy VII's characters, gameplay, story, and overall atmosphere were very unique from the rest of the series. I've played them all and none other is like VII. The only ones that are really very much alike at all is 1,2, and 4. 9 would be the most unique overall for its amazing artstyle, though. Like i told Abecale, there's nothing wrong with someone not liking the game, but saying it was cliche or generic when it sets itself apart from everything else that came before it in a multitude of different ways is.... well.... silly. :P

I'm sorry. I really do apologize about being so difficult abou this. I just can't let this go. Sorry. So, once again: Where's your proof? You say you keep proving, but you've never said anything or giving any examples as proof. I've played many JRPGs and a great many of them came long before VII's time. I stand by what I've said.

VII wasn't about a poor boy from a small town who wakes up to his mom calling him. It wasn't about a valiant knight coming to answer the call of his monarchy. It wasn't about time or interdimensional travel. There were no kings and queens and no snot-nosed princesses to drag around with you. It wasn't set in an all colorful and enchanting world.

VII was about a guy who you thought was some awesome hero joining a band of rebels to take down an evil organization that was abusing the planet's resources and ultimately destroying it only to find out later that your awesome hero was never really a hero at all, the evil orgainization is a lot nastier than you thought and still the least of your worries, your famed idol is now the planet's worst enemy, and those precious resources may be your only salvation are you lucky enough to stop them in time from becoming your immediate doom.

That's not even to mention anything to do with the amazing backstories for each character that are so deep and heart wrenching that you're forced to care about each of them as if they were a dear friend. Then there're the amazing oh snap moments, one of which literally brought me to tears (only one other game has done that and it too is an undeniable masterpiece (MGS3)). There's a constant feeling of impending doom at some points, melancholy, deppression, victory... The game's an emotional rollercoaster! And this is just the freakin' story I'm talking about!!!

There's still the over-the-top steampunk atmosphere that so perfectly blended futuristic with modern with antique that you couldn't tell what era you were supposed to be in and really did a lot to influence the overall mood in each area. There's still the fact that it was the first JRPG with cenematics and a 3d world map which became the standard since! I don't have time to go on about the gameplay, but the Materia system was the most widely customizeable and effective system in any FF game up to that point and is still one of the all time best. The materia system alone should earn this game a fat label slapped across the fron that says "NOT CLICHE."

So, if you can think of another game before VII that this reminds you of or that some elements may have been borrowed from then please let me know. ;)

[QUOTE="Abecale"]

[QUOTE="TheEldestGod"] No, it wasn't cliche. Like i told Abecale, there's nothing wrong with someone not liking the game, but saying it was cliche or generic when it sets itself apart from everything else that came before it in a multitude of different ways is.... well.... silly. :P TheEldestGod

Obviously you've never played much JRPG's before. It is all like something else in the other series, before it. I keep proving it, you keep not accepting it. I cant win.

And this is just the freakin' story I'm talking about!!!

agreed, if VII is cliched then please give examples of where it was all been seen and done before. when Aerith got bumped off that was one of the most surprising and emotional scene-not just in FF games but in any game ever!

FF: Mystic Quest for the SNES was garbage

jeremiah06

lol Yes that is the correct answer /thread

Mystic Quest wasn't that bad. If you look over all the over-head rpgs back on the SNES, Mystic Quest did a great job.

9 Had the deepest story. Some of the characters were not so good, but each one really had its own personality and it just came together perfectly. You really should take the time to finish 9 you won't be disappointed.

Also from Gran Pulse on FF13 is the game it should have been.

I agree. IX has an amazing story and should really be given a full run. A lot of people didn't like it because of the kiddy looking artstyle, but I loved the artsyle of that game and the story is just as unique and beautiful. I wish more people would give that game the time it deserves (one of the best FF endings ever awaits!).

I also agree about FFXIII. If you didn't have to wait 30 hours to get to that point a lot more people would have enjoyed it and it wouldn't have gotten stuck with such crummy reviews. However, it got my 9.5 from about 10 hours in. - .5 for the first ten hours.

VI is the best one imo.

didnt care for X dont really count XI dont really count X 2 either.

played XII for 2 hours and took it back. the worst imho is XIII.

it just dosent feel like a final fantasy game to me. no towns, you do everything at save points. the characters are forgettable, you can only control lightning or whenever she has another hissy fit then u control someone else. the black guy is a buffoon. its too linear...i mean tooooo linear. SE could heve called this something else and no one would have cared...because its Square Enix. i honestly have yet to play a traditional RPG this generation that dosent suck.

VC is a srpg and demons souls is harder than ten thugs in harlem so i dont count them. eternal sonata sucked a$$ so did star ocean.

though i hold FF VI a tad bit higher than VII, mostly because of KEFKA.. i have to agree with this 100%

yeah sephiroth killed a chick. but kefka poisoned a entare village killing the men women AND children.....and what did he do???? he laughed...HE LAUGHED!!!! and then jumped around screaming hate over and over.KEFKA is that dude.

Does this include spinoffs? If so, then Dissidia on the PSP by a large margin. The gameplay was bland and repetitive, and the voice acting made me want to punch a wall (all of this is just my opinion of course).

I've played all the main installments but II, V, and VI and out of the one I played I'd have to say III was the least enjoyable. Unnecessarily hard at times and some of the dungeons were long and tedious. Not a bad game by any means, but definitely my least favorite FF game.

X-2, I just didn't like the direction they went with it. I absolutely loved X though._Doomsayer_
same. X-2 was one of those games that was unbearably cheesy.

For me FF7 was totally the worst. Ugh. You know once I accidentally finished that game? I was like "wait, that was the end boss? ??"

Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Oh and let's not forget to give Final Fantasy X-2 a dishonorable mention.

I'm just as much a FF fan as anyone could be since I've played and enjoyed them all (with the exception of a few spin-offs that I still played but hardly enjoyed) and I thoroughly disagree. I love this game! I talked this same crap before actaully playing the game but since playing and beating it I've realized what an assumptuous idiot I was being. Its just as much a FF as any other. It makes some pretty drastic changes from the traditional formula but 10, 11 (well, duh!) , and 12 made quite a few themselves while pretty much every title has made at least a handful of less obvious ones. 13 could have been a lot better than it was but it was still quite amazing and very far from the worst.

Anyone who says othewise obsiously hasn't played the whole game (or the entire series).

Don't accidentally finish FF13 then. The end boss is a total joke!
