@ The Main Argument of this Thread: I'd love to step in, seeing how I don't like VII (lol sig/avi irony), but it seems the argument is stepping a bit beyond VII and into a category I'm not 100% familiar with. (JRPGs before VII) The big question is whether or not the story and characters of VII are cliche, right?
[quote="Wiki"]A cliché or cliche (pronounced klē-ˈshā) is a saying, expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has been overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, rendering it a stereotype, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel.Abecale
The only way I see FFVII being cliche', would be if the type of story/characters have been overused in other games before Final Fantasy VII was released. In all honesty, I don't really like the game too much since I played future JRPGs first, so my opinion is obviously not gonna give the game points. Void it. =p So, back on topic:
Was it cliche?
No, it wasn't cliche. Final Fantasy VII's characters, gameplay, story, and overall atmosphere were very unique from the rest of the series. I've played them all and none other is like VII. The only ones that are really very much alike at all is 1,2, and 4. 9 would be the most unique overall for its amazing artstyle, though. Like i told Abecale, there's nothing wrong with someone not liking the game, but saying it was cliche or generic when it sets itself apart from everything else that came before it in a multitude of different ways is.... well.... silly. :P Obviously you've never played much JRPG's before. It is all like something else in the other series, before it. I keep proving it, you keep not accepting it. I cant win.
I'm sorry. I really do apologize about being so difficult abou this. I just can't let this go. Sorry. So, once again: Where's your proof? You say you keep proving, but you've never said anything or giving any examples as proof. I've played many JRPGs and a great many of them came long before VII's time. I stand by what I've said.VII wasn't about a poor boy from a small town who wakes up to his mom calling him. It wasn't about a valiant knight coming to answer the call of his monarchy. It wasn't about time or interdimensional travel. There were no kings and queens and no snot-nosed princesses to drag around with you. It wasn't set in an all colorful and enchanting world.
VII was about a guy who you thought was some awesome hero joining a band of rebels to take down an evil organization that was abusing the planet's resources and ultimately destroying it only to find out later that your awesome hero was never really a hero at all, the evil orgainization is a lot nastier than you thought and still the least of your worries, your famed idol is now the planet's worst enemy, and those precious resources may be your only salvation are you lucky enough to stop them in time from becoming your immediate doom.
That's not even to mention anything to do with the amazing backstories for each character that are so deep and heart wrenching that you're forced to care about each of them as if they were a dear friend. Then there're the amazing oh snap moments, one of which literally brought me to tears (only one other game has done that and it too is an undeniable masterpiece (MGS3)). There's a constant feeling of impending doom at some points, melancholy, deppression, victory... The game's an emotional rollercoaster! And this is just the freakin' story I'm talking about!!!
There's still the over-the-top steampunk atmosphere that so perfectly blended futuristic with modern with antique that you couldn't tell what era you were supposed to be in and really did a lot to influence the overall mood in each area. There's still the fact that it was the first JRPG with cenematics and a 3d world map which became the standard since! I don't have time to go on about the gameplay, but the Materia system was the most widely customizeable and effective system in any FF game up to that point and is still one of the all time best. The materia system alone should earn this game a fat label slapped across the fron that says "NOT CLICHE."
So, if you can think of another game before VII that this reminds you of or that some elements may have been borrowed from then please let me know. ;)
