It would probably look like a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

considering the original playstation revolutionized gaming ... i'd say gaming would be a lot different than it is today.

Then we would just have 2 systems or another company to put out games. Sony hasn't always been around. 3 companies only have been around since last generation. Before that there was only 2 main companies. Sure there was the Saturn back in the 32/64 bit era, but that died after about a year. It was mostly Nintendo and Sega. There was also turbo grafx 16, but that didn't do anything and neither did MSX. Having 3 is a little overbearing. Another company would just be annoying and dumb.

we would still have cartridges most likely, or we would be just now moving to CDs.

Sega CD and Sega Saturn both used CD's. Nothing would be different, all the games that were on the playstation consoles would have been on other consoles instead. Only, Sega would probably still be making consoles.

Well considering nintendo 64 was intended to use sony tech, but sony decided to split and make PSX. I think Microsoft wouldn't have joined until much later because there wouldn't be any money to be made because nintendo would have a monopoly on console gaming. Also, PC gaming would be much more popular (and so it should be, after all, consoles are the poor-mans PC)

All of my inspiration for my novels and game ideas....gone and perhaps different. My standards would be low enough to gittily await games like Killzone 2 if not for Sony. Shadows of the Colossus is forever in my brain. =)

we would probably never had USB or DVD or BluRay technology... (for those who didn't knew this)

And most of us would be playing other addictive games on our pcs...

we would never have played God of War and many games would not have come out because the N64's cartriages could not fit as much data as the Playstation's data. Also as we can see with the 6th generation of video games, the gamecube still didn't have as much space on their discs because they were using a mini dvd so some ps2 games would not be able to come onto the gamecube unless they downgraded the graphics or took out some storyline affecting the whole game itself. In the sixth generation we would not see MS in the field because nintendo would still have a monoply on the gaming industry or maybe the dreamcast would be competing with Nintendo. Either way, without Sony, a lot of games that require much more disk space would not have come out.

Sega would still be around in hardware, because it was in large part to Sony's smear campaigns of the dreamcast that they couldn't afford to stay around very long. We may have been looking at the Dreamcast 2 (or 3) by now. Nintendo would have probably taken even longer before moving to a disc-based system. Microsoft may not have entered the console hardware business and instead "live vicariously" through the Dreamcast and its successors. consoles would still actually be reliable, unlike their PS1 and PS2 generation. I wouldn't feel compelled to buy a replacement plan for a console nowadays until they entered the market, that's for sure.
