Thats a good question, like what do they remove from a regular ps3? From the ps2 you may be able to get an idea such as a different tray,

If you wait a few months to buy a slim it'll be more probable that all the bugs will be worked out...

the ps2 had a massive empty space inside it, this was due to the absence of an HDMI port, these ps2's that featured them were only released in Japan for a brief time. After that there was nothing but empty space where that port was...

They remove size and that's it, over time technology gets smaller and as such they can shrink down the inside parts which means they can make the outside smaller, it's really that simple. To the TC, you also gotta remember the fatty is also the game price as the slim now (well the 80gig fat is the same price as the 120gig slim) so if your to worried about a catch (and the only real catches are the slim is smaller and has no other OS support) then just buy a fat and upgrade the HDD to a 120gig (or bigger) after selling the 80gig drive and buying a 120gig drive it would only cost about $10 more or something.

Ummm... no the slim ps2 had many overheating issues in the first batch. So i'm gonna wait and see how these ps3 slims hold up and might pick up a second production run of the slim. Not in any real rush b/c i got a original 60G that's still running strong. So far the only advantage i see w/ the new slim is that it'll use less juice which if ur a tree hugger then that might be a big thing for ya.

Quite the opposite my friend, the first batch of slims had overheating problems so Sony had to recall each unit.

STurn21

Can't install linux anymore and there is a 360 like power "brick" outside of the console instead of inside.

It doesn't have a power brick like the 360 (where did you get that idea from?), it has an internal power supply just like the fat does, it just has a different cable (a 2 pin instead of a 3 pin).

Uhh... functionally the same as the current neutered fatty PS3's, and you can't install an alternate OS on them. Sony (for whatever reason) removed the functionality on the Slim's firmware. That being said, considering that they already pretty much block access to being able to make coherent drivers for anything in the ps3, I still fail to see how they were somehow able to convince the EU that it's still "a computer" and not get charged the extra taxes and VAT (which is why they did it in the first place).

The only downside is that you can't install Linux. Most people don't care about that anyways, but if you do, that's the catch. the PS3 production cost has gone dow 70%, which is why Sony can make it cheaper now. They're not skimiping on more features to save money.

There is no catch. Take it or leave it.
