[QUOTE="hazelnutman"]There are certain rules to horror games which must be followed in my opinion to truly be scary to me. First of all, there is no way in hell I'm going to be creeped out if I have a partner with me. Isolation is a crucial part of fear, and that feeling is seldom achieved through partners and co-operative play. *cough* Resident Evil 5 *cough* Next up, the access to tools to fight off the terrors which haunt you pretty much kills any kind of scariness the game might have otherwise had. There's no way I'm going to crap my pants if I know that I have a clip of 100 plasma rifle rounds to obliterate anything in my path. That's not to say that you should be powerless to fight off the horror, but at least make it a less-appealing path than running away or avoiding it. *cough* Dead Space *cough* Finally, some developers think it's fine to classify a game as "horror" as long as it has some cheap surprises and scares. What you need is good atmosphere for immersion. Immersion can come from many little things such as a great story, good voice acting, great use of music, proper lighting, unpredictable pacing, etc, etc. Many "horror" games nowadays find a way to screw this up by doing stupid things like cuing the same music every time an enemy is near, only fading out once everyone in the area is dead. I'm still waiting for a good horror game from this gen. That's not to say that games such as Resident Evil 5 and Dead Space are no good (they're some of my favorite PS3 titles), but rather, they're great at being action games, but fail at being good at delivering horror.1bigsmoke55
Siren Captured this. I like SURVIVAL HORROR games because i'm on my own, powerless, and not nowing what's there lying in wait.
Exactly , I agree with you both, I feel proud to have imported a blu ray copy myself. It's a gem considering how the genre is lacking this gen.Now just to add to your comment about Siren , that's all taken to the extreme when you control a child having to hide to make it out alive , that was epic for my horror tastes.
