I'm hearing from a lot of people that MGS 4 is the best game they played period, not to mention the best in the series. However after playing through MGS 4 and then playing through the original MGS shortly thereafter ( thank god for the Essential Collection) I feel that MGS is by far superior.

The graphics don't look as amazing as they once did, they actually look pretty bad by today's standards but the art style still transcends and looks great. The story is definatly the best in the series, it is fairly easy to follow but still offers all the depth and intrigue that Metal Gear games are famous for. The gameplay is near perfection ( too much backtracking), while it's sometimes hard to aim and the buttons are not pressure sensetive every weapon and gadget is useful and fun. The boss battles are absolutely phenomenal and memorable even after the game is over.

I really liked MGS 4 but it just didnt't capture the same magic that MGS and MGS3 did.

In my opinion here is the list of Metal Gear Solid games in order from best to worst:

1) MGS

2) MGS3

3) MGS4

4) MGS2

Would like to know people's opinions on the best game in the series and why.

I thought MGS4 used too many predictable cliches and not enough original material to warrant a true classic status.

Why did every single Boss fight end the same way? You shooting at a hot girl in a skintight suit. The European act was a complete disaster with almost no real MGS gameplay. The tripback to Shadow Moses was great at first until you realized they didn't actually add anything there to make it more then a short nostalgic trip. The predictable mission briefings and the final fight versus Liquid was pretty weak. And how come I cannot stand with my back to the well like all the previous games?

I don't want to sound too negative since I really did enjoy the game. The graphics are the best I have ever seen. The gameplay has been tuned to perfection and the story as convulting as it finally get's wrapped up and fully fleshed out. I just feel that there were so many opportunities for MGS4 to really shine creatively instead of just reminding us what made the past games so great. I mean even the last B&B fight with Mantis could have been made into something minblowing, instead we just get reminded of how much cooler Psycho Mantis was in MGS.

Having played all of them quite a few times, I'd personally go with this order of my favorites:

- MGS4, MGS1, MGS 3 and finally MGS2. 8)

why is everyone hating on MGS2? personaly I liked MGS2 just as much as MGS1. I just want to know why you guys put MGS2 last on most of your lists. I would probably say that all of you dont like MGS2 as much because raiden replaced snake as the playable character, and for some strainge reason alot of MGS fans dispise raiden...

I'm thinking you would've enjoyed mgs4 alot more had you completed the series prior to playing.

For me it's hard to say that I liked one better than the other because each one had parts that I really enjoyed. But if I had to choose it would be in this order: mgs, mgs4, mgs2, mgs3.

I beat every Metal Gear Solid game that came before MGS4. I always got them on day 1 too:)

I meant that I was replaying the Essential Collection not playing for the first time.

Yeah, I think that MGS3 amd MGS1 had the least confusing and best stories though I can't figure out which one I like best. MGS2 and MGS 4 both suffered from overcomplicated plot and overdone cutscenes imo.

MGS -It's grahic imporvement over the standard as well as its insane story and sick bosses kept you palying again and again. It deserves credit for if not creating theessentially perfecting the stealth genre.

MGS 4 - While the levels were short and twists and turns somewhat predicatable (as soon as the System was mentioned I out loud said "This will end poorly"). However, I haven't felt as connected to a game or as invested in plot in any game ever.At the end, there were times I even got a little choked up, yeah I said it.

MGS2- My problems with MGS2 and 3 are essentially the same, the lack of actually being Solid Snake. While Raiden and Naked Snake were both good characters, I always simply enjoyed being Solid Snake more. Though rocking a sword was sweet.

MGS3 - There are no flies on this game, I simply enoyed it the least, but the boss battles are likely the best of any MGS game. The story was definitely interesting, and gives you a lot of important background, but it just didn't grab me like the other games.

I agree with everything you said....but MGS4 had the best controls and game-play(minus the boss battles) which puts it in front of the older games..if MGS was remade with the controls and graphics of today it would be far superior

Metal Gear Solid 3: Super Subsistence.

MGS3SS combines the gameplay improvements in MGS4 within MGS3's setting.

Just kidding. But anyways MGS4 gets the cake for me, closely followed by MGS3S, closely followed by MGS2 and closely followed by MGS1.

The games get better by each entry to the series.

Another thing that I noticed was that in MGS and maybe MGS3 ( I don't remember ) the bosses felt like a part of natural progression of the story, in MGS 4 it felt more like a token end of the chapter boss. They didn't have any real significance to the story and just felt thrown in to signify the end of the level.

1. MGS4- The graphics and controls are the best, and the story is really intriging.

2. MGS2- This was the first MGS that I played and was an eye opening experience for me. Without a doubt the best story.

3. MGS3- I had trouble playing through this one, mainly because it did not feel as compelling as MGS2. Loved the boss battles. Felt the graphics were actually better in MGS2.

4. MG- This was actually the second to last game that I played in the series, so obviously I was not taken on graphics, the controls are hard to get accustomed to especially when you can't shoot in first person mode and there is no tranquilizer gun. (As far as I know) And the voice acting for it's time was top notch, but feels forced and a little hammy now, you can definetely tell the voice actors got better as the series progressed. Also Kojima got better at writing the dialogue as the series went along. But even though I still found myself loving every second of the action.

The only B&B boss that ended a level was Raging Raven, unless you're talking about the other 2 bosses, who play a HUGE part in the storylines of all the games...

I have been a hardcore MGS fan since the beginning and I can say 4 to me was the best. 1,2 and 3 for me are all equal, 1 was the first of its kind and simply amazing. 2 had the most mind blowing story and sharpened everything about 1. 3, had the best story and some of the best boss battles. Portable Ops is the best PSP title but not quite on the same level with the original games. So my final word, best, 4. 1,2 and 3 are all tied and PO was the worst (not to say its bad, like I said best PSP game.)

I am a huge MGS fan and played every single game at least 50 times through and through, I simply love everything about them the story, the intense gameplay, the beautiful sound, voice acting, simply everything.

Anyway here is my order of the best MGS games :

1-MGS2

2-MGS4

3-MGS

4-MGS3

Although a lot of people might find that MGS3 is the best one but I just thought it was too long, too hard and sometimes just plain stupid, but that doesn't mean I didn't absolutely love it and replayed 20 times.

Personally - MGS, MGS4, MGS3, MGS2

MGS to me had great balance in its story telling and gameplay mechanics. And the best boss fights. The story was understandable from one playthrough and from the game itself (ie. not having to look things up) and well it was deep and very good. Gameplay was great, simple but definitely effective. All the weapons in that game had their moment of use, which i don't think any other game i've played has equalled. The bosses were memorable and also challenging at first (ie. trying to grasp how to beat them was a task). And I absolutely loved liquid snake (fav character of entire series) as the final boss, and the final battles he presented solid snake with.

MGS4 is a great game. Certain gameplay elements are just 'wow', and the core gameplay to me was better than mgs3. The story was good too however, it suffered from having to deal with mgs2's convoluted plot and well, the ending after the credits sorta left a bitter taste in my mouth. And it worked the nostalgic moments from previous games (esp mgs) very well. The game has the second best boss battles to me, in that the vamp and liquid fight were good story wise (with the liquid fight being a great gameplay element as well) and the other boss battles having good gameplay elements (octopus, wolf, raven and frogs (didn't enjoy the mantis fight as much..) although fairly easy and not as memorable as mgs.

MGS3 was a good game. Story wise it was ok i guess, nothing much really until the end, and even then i didn't have much feeling for 'the boss'. Gameplaywise was good, but irritatingly enough, the normal foot soldiers were more of a hassle to deal with than bosses. I hated the alert system and thought the camoflage (sp?) wasn't great, improved in mgs4 i believe. The bosses weren't great either save for the end, the sorrow and maybe the boss as well. Though the end failed in delivering an actual sniper vs sniper match, and the boss battle wasn't exactly thought provoking (esp irritating is how naked suddenly has the power to beat the boss who kicked his arse every other time, should have given us the control over naked during those times too would've won for sure)

MGS2 the weakest of the bunch. And not because of raiden. I didn't mind him, didn't have much of a prob with him. What i hated was the introduction of the patriots...cue convoluted story. then the codec scenes. If i remember correctly, there was a time when you found the president, that, instead of showing a cutscene of the two talking, you used codec....i mean the guys were even face to face...i mean....big WTF moment to me. But above all else, was the poor copy of the shadow moses incident. I hated that the battles resembled those in mgs, that the situations faced resembled those in mgs, if i had wanted to do that, i would have replayed mgs, had the better gameplay as well. And the excuse, oh they wanted to test soldiers like how solid snake wen't through shadow moses, big WTF moment again to me. Felt like a slap in the face, waiting for a sequel and bam, mediocre at best. Boss fights were nothing great too, except for Fortune, best character in that game. Oh and the return of liquid as well.

I haven't finished mgs port ops, but based on what i have done, and the games above, prob come in ahead of mgs2 deff, and maybe ahead of mgs3 if i ever finish it and it turns out great.

MGS2 was an amazing game, but it pales in comparison to the rest of the series with its subpar boss battles (save the final two). The overall experience of MGS3 brought the tactical espionage to a level no prior MG had achieved and (sadly) MGS4 lacked. The boss battle with "The End" was simply epic, but there was always the option to kill him towards the beginning of the game when he's wheeled out in his wheelchair - thereby bypassing him altogether. Metal Gear Solid for the original playstation has it's advantages as well: no other MGS felt the same. What I mean by this is that MGS had a Noir/Cyber/Biopunk aesthetic that didn't really exist in the following titles. MGS2 and MGS3 had the most character development of the four, and before you disagree, Otacon was somewhat two-dimensional prior to his relations with Emma, Snake, and Jack. MGS3 had to develop everyone in prologue, making the audience sympathize with Big Boss.

Then there's MGS4. MGS4 was something unbearably exciting and moving, but there were some problems with it. First of all, if someone can beat the game in 2 hours thirty-seven minutes on the hardest difficulty, then the game is probably: too short and too easy. Second, after the depth of the surreptitious gameplay of MGS3 (jungles, bases, camo, sound, movement, caverns, etc.) I felt that the almost blatant disregard for sleath in MGS4 was a step back for the franchise. Now I know, if one were to actively attempt to be sneaky, the game would be more akin to MGS and MGS2, but 4 didn't even remotely penalize a player for running through as though it were any run-of-the-mill shooter. If I were to go back and play any of the previous installments and attempt to play them in a manner similar to MGS4, Snake/Raiden would die... a lot.

But, because my heartstrings were so viciously tugged, I absolutely adore 4. I can't however, definitively choose which of the serious is the best.

And in defense of MGS2, it does have the best MGS line of all time.

FTW:

"I hear it's amazing when the famouse purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!"

Spetznas1982

I would have to diagree big time, MGS was a great game but it didnt have the best story IMO that honour goes to Snake eater IMO.

I think all the MGS games were amazing its by far my fav gaming series, i ould order them like this.

1: MGS3: Snake eater

2:MGS4: Guns Of The Patriots

3:MGS2: Sons of liberty

4:MGS1

IMO 3 was the best game mainly because i liked the story better, by far MGS4 had the best gameplay mainly due to streamlined controls and camera, Snake eater had the best boss battles also, of course this is just my opinion, im not disagreing by saying your wrong as your not because thats your opinion im just saying my opinion doesnt agree with yours(i only say this as some people take offence).

Regardless all MGS games are amazing IMO and whatever game you prefer best is a solid choice.

[QUOTE="ethanpaige"]I didn't find MGS4's plot overcomplicated at all...Swift_Boss_A

True, MGS4's plot was not too complex compared to MGS2

For me both 2 and 4 had moments where I really had to think about what they were talking about.
